I'm glad the players that get spots are getting paid more due to the CBA, but I don't like the idea of quality bench players being essentially forced into early retirement just because they cost too much. Or a rookie missing out on a spot because the team can only carry 11 players. Me no likey!

Any vet that wants to stay in the league can always take the vet minimum. They don't have to retire if they don't want to. Any coach would rather have an experienced player over a rookie.

They basically needed to release Walker-Kimbrough to make room to sign Vaughn. Which shows you how tight the numbers are in Phoenix.

Is Vaughn really that important though? Considering they have Griner, Turner, and Breland coming back.

Yeah, bringing her back for way more than the vet minimum is beyond me. Especially for a team that already has money issues.

The issue being that on several teams they kinda can't. Multiple teams have spots where there's room for the $58,710 minimum that applies to players with 0-2 years of service in the WNBA, but not enough room for the $70,040 minimum for players with 3+ years. You can still sign, because one-year minimum deals count as Training Camp Contracts and therefore don't count on the cap until opening day, but making the roster is either an impossibility or would require beating out someone the team is a lot less likely to cut.

This is why I'm surprised they haven't introduced a system where all minimums count the same in cap terms. In the NBA, the minimum salary varies enormously depending on years of service, but the cap hit is the same regardless. So if you can fit a minimum who's barely played in the league, you can fit a 15-year vet who'll play for the minimum. All it costs you is the cash difference between the deals. The WNBA, despite the fact that it's always vets negotiating the CBAs, has never bothered to introduce something like that.

That's a great point -- it would help the league and the players without costing a lot of money.

But usually CBAs wind up penalizing the middle-class veterans, who on the one hand want to be paid more than rookies but on the other, would like to have a job.

Per source, the Phoenix Mercury have informed Jessica Breland that she will not be a part of their plans moving forward.

Teams now expressing interest in Breland include Chicago, Dallas, and Indiana. | @Winsidr

Laughing No shit. They gave Vaughn exactly as much as they mathematically could, then had to waive Coffey to fit Nurse and Walker. It was already pretty obvious...

I’m like, Breland not returning to Phoenix is like stating water is wet and the grass is green..

Chicago seems like a stretch as well. She's certainly not getting more than the vet minimum there, unless they find a taker for someone like Dolson. If she took the vet minimum then it'd still be her, or Mavunga, or Boyd, to actually make the roster.

Per source, Williams ultimately signed w/ Las Vegas due to her familiarity w/ Gray (Sparks) and Cambage (Shock). Another huge piece was Bill Laimbeer's track record and the freedom to play "AS HER." What he did with Deanna Nolan (Detroit) was influential for her. |

@Winsidr

Sparks didnt even make her an offer Shocked

Which isn’t surprising, IMO.

We’re in “take what you can get” phase of free agency now.

Why did the Fever waive her? They have to pay her anyway right? She is better then DRob at this point. I wouldnt mind the Storm picking her up cheap and waiving Tuck or her competing with Prince for that spot on the team

since Sims already gets 119K it technically almost max even if she just takes a vet minimum

Sims in Seattle on a vet minimum crossed my mind

Sims in Atl instead of Cazorla or Dietrick?

Oh of course Sims back to Minny on an non-garauteed contract

Could also see back to LA

or maybe NY as an option

Sims getting payed regardless means she can go ring shopping if she wants.

The Minny trade makes so much more sense if she just goes back now at vet minimum and isn't blocking the Powers signing (it also seems slightlt unethical but that is what makes it intriguing).

But how did the lynx knew that the Fever were going to waive her?
