Comets fell apart because Les Alexander went through a divorce and his heart was no longer in it. His wife was the Comets' driving force---direct quote I got from Van Chancellor.

Selling to the wrong furniture guy killed the team. Koch didn't have the cash to keep the team running. Now if Jim "Matress Mac" McIlvaine would have bought the team, the Comets LIKELY are still active.

So I was thinking while I couldn't sleep ...

Imagine a 34-year-old Taurasi playing with in-their-primes

Angel McCoughtry (all-around player like Swoopes, maybe not as good)
Nneka Ogwumike (Tina Thompson but not as good a shooter)
Emma Meesseman (versatile foreign star like Arcain)

Add a serviceable point guard (Jasmine Thomas, Briann January)

Play a post who doesn't get in the way (Mercedes Russell)

Bring a shooter off the bench to spell Taurasi (Sami Whitcomb)

How do you guard that team? Are they title favorites every year, especially if the league is 10% worse?

Who was this player for the Comets? Those first four years they didn't have a bench player average more than .5 3s made per game (Amaya Valdemoro).

Isn't Taurasi rated so high by fans because of her shooting, particularly 3 point shooting, and passing? Per the stats it is close with a small edge to Cooper in shooting percentage and a small edge to Taurasi in A/TO. Taurasi has a career field goal percentage of 43.2%, is 36.7% career from 3, 4.3 assists per game (2.7 turnovers - 1.59 A/TO). Cooper has a career field goal percentage of 45.9%, was 37.7% career from 3, with 4.9 assists per game (3.4 turnovers - 1.44 A/TO). Taurasi: 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 0.7 blocks. Cooper: 3.2 rebounds, 1.56 steals, 0.28 blocks.

But I haven't seen anybody in the WNBA who had the ability to go from the three-point line to the basket and finish (good elevation at the rim) the way Cooper could. Like some NBA players have been - get a layup or get fouled.

Taurasi is bigger, but Cooper was more athletic. I pick Cooper. And I think team results are a tough way to tell how good an individual player is.

There is a difference in the two groups of players -- both Thompson and Swoopes were good three-point shooters, which Ogwumike is not. The Comets didn't need another three-point shooter, and of course the game was played differently then.

But really, that's a nit-pick. How good would Taurasi, McCoughtry, Ogwumike and Meesseman be in today's WNBA?

We basically saw that team in Moore, Augustus, Fowles and Brunson. They were pretty f-ing good against much, much better competition than Cooper's teams ever faced.
