Not too worried about Nikki. She has a ton of connections and should be able to assemble a fine coaching staff. A coaching shift is always a tenuous time for ACs everywhere, though.

Some of the MSU players seem to be welcoming McCray publicly, which to me, is a good sign in a very difficult situation. She was certainly a good player and she has P5 experience coaching as an assistant. If she can land a really good recruiter, I think she will do just fine. In the current climate we're in, I think MSU did the best job they could with a replacement. However, she has little HC experience and this could backfire.

Meh, maybe not. Vic DID have 7 years as HC at Sam Houston State....15 years before he became HC for the Bulldogs. And that included several years alongside some top-notch coaching talent (Blair).

But I think McCray has every potential to fare well there. One potential asset she has? Her youth. Vic is getting 'up there', as far as chasing a NC -- and I say that, knowing I'm older than he is, so I'm not being ageist -- but that requires a lotta stamina and vigor. Jus' sayin'. Cool

it's not always about experience at the helm. a lot of it is about teaching. Nikki had two of the best in Pat and Dawn.

Some rather unrealistic and unfair expectations being built here, it seems.

I think she's a very good (and realistic) choice for MissSt. Very good hire.

But, reality is, she has THREE years as a head coach. Did a good job, and went 26-7 this year, but that was in CUSA and without playing a single ranked team. This is an entirely different thing and a very very big step up.

I wish her well, but it's pretty unrealistic to expect ANYONE to keep Miss St where they've been the last few years, and I fear the fan base will judge her by completely delusional standards.

I agree with you 100-percent Art. Nikki has some big shoes to fill and Vic did an amazing job with the talent he had. The vast majority of coaches won't ever see a final four much less two title games.

I think patience, as you mention, will be important as people tend to want instant results.

Contract details released.

Quote:
The new MSU women's basketball coach signed a four-year deal worth $750,000 annually in base compensation.

That's a drastic difference from what the MSU athletic department was paying former head coach Vic Schaefer. He departed last week to become the head coach at Texas, which paid Schaefer's buyout of $1.25 million, according to the Mississippi State athletic department.

Schaefer had signed a contract extension with Mississippi State in July 2018 that paid him an average of nearly $1.6 million per year. At the time of his extension, Schaefer became one of the highest-paid coaches in women's college basketball.

20-21 roster is up and adjusted for attrition and the new coaches. Madison Hayes highly ranked incoming freshmen is not on the list.

Decent roster, I'd say. No freshmen coming in?

No. They likely simply haven't listed the new freshmen yet. This is fairly common for programs who update the roster over the summer for the following year. This is assuming Madison Hayes has re-committed to Nikki and the coaching staff.

Hayes stays, bulldog fears she allays.

Madison Hayes will honor her LOI with Mississippi State and Nikki McRae Pinson.

That's a huge keep for the Bulldogs.

Nikki has added an international flavor with Charlotte Kohl, 6'5 C from Germany, who was a member of both their national U16 and U18 teams. Nice get for her

I was a little confused as it would be her senior season...I saw a few people on Twitter say farewell..does this mean she is foregoing her final season of eligibility or just sitting out a year? Question Idea Nothing I read explicitly said..

She still will have eligibility and if I’m not mistaken she can play immediately. Maybe she will follow Schaefer to Texas

Growing pains or are the players done?

BulldAwgs were shellacked at home 77-57 to fall to 5-7 in the SEC. Rickea Jackson didn’t start and played only 11 minutes.

It’s been a tough year and MSU has had its COVID pauses but is there more to it than that? This team has shown it has talent but blowouts are getting to be the norm.

Growing pains, I suspect. Goes with a new coach.

Rickea Jackson could be one of the top players in the country and she only played 11 minutes? Hmmmm. I don't see this as a new coach with growing pains, honestly. There is far too much talent on this team for this to be their season.
