Per coach Nikki Collen, Courtney Williams will be arriving in the bubble at some point. there's no timetable for her arrival. This is to be assumed she tested positive for COVID-19.

This.

Every PG doesn’t have to be Whalen, Bird, Vandersloot, and Penicheiro to have some value.

While we're talking about college numbers, note that Whalen's ATO as a Golden Gopher was barely 1.2

And she wasn't much of an outside shooter.

Similarly with Ionescu and Cazorla / Moore, she also didn't play "PG" in college. Although she lead the Gophers in assists all 4 seasons, Corrin Von Wald and Shannon Schonrock were the primary ball handlers.

As noted by toad above, what can Brown (or Williams, or Johnson) do for you? Not a heck of a lot right now.

They are without Glory Johnson and Kalani Brown, who remain on the team’s roster. There have been no updates on their status.

Courtney Williams, one of the Dream’s marquee offseason signings, is not with the team.

“She will be coming, we do not know when yet,” coach Nicki Collen said. “But she will be coming.”

This preview assumed the team would have its key additions on board by tipoff time down in the Wubble. And you know what happens when you AssUMe things about this franchise.

Quote:
Coach Nicki gets to finally build a team from the bottom-up, without bearing much of the weights of decisions from organizational leaders past. She has some new veterans to turn to, including a pair with a recent Finals pedigree, that aren’t caught up in the old ways of doing things around these parts. Even better, she has a young starlet to mold and hitch onto for a long-anticipated rebuild.

But the chemistry needed to compete in the rough-and-tumble WNBA will be lacking, especially with reliance upon a rookie scorer cutting her teeth and a series of inexperienced youngsters providing some semblance of depth but requiring tutelage on the fly.

On paper, this looks to be a team that should turn some frowns upside down, particularly when it comes to seizing the rebounding edge. With C-Will and Carter pushing the pace, there could be tantalizing opportunities to thrive in transition on offense, something past Dream teams struggled to do without McCoughtry leading the way. Whether this team has the energy to sustain a cohesive defensive approach, in transition or in the halfcourt over the course of 40 minutes, remains to be seen.

This could have been a fascinating post-Angel transition period, with Hayes and Montgomery on-board. Further, with many key stars sitting out (Jonquel Jones, Cambage, Tina Charles, Kristi Tolliver, Chiney Ogwumike, Asia Durr, Maya Moore, and possibly Elena Delle Donne and Odyssey Sims among them), this abbreviated season could have been a prime opportunity for Atlanta to build its way back into postseason prowess. Ultimately, that may have to wait until the curtains come up on the WNBA's next season, whenever that comes to pass.

No matter how many wins this collective picks up, the ultimate challenge facing Collen and the coaching staff, as Atlanta treads through this 22-game schedule, is to shift the longstanding local narrative of What Could Have Been, into What Could Be.

#RightNow

Quote:
In those scrimmages [vs. Connecticut and Washington], Collen praised another new face on the Dream roster: Betnijah Laney.

“She was the best player on our team today. She plays with a ton of energy, and right now she’s making her pull-up jump shots,” Collen said.

Excellent work ~lw3!! Most in depth review of any W team I've seen this year, and some great pictures as well.

If Betnijah Laney's the best answer you've got, you probably need some better questions.

On a separate note, Brown officially tested positive and is still recovering: https://twitter.com/kalanibrown21/status/1286664518123294720

Grazie!

Especially for us fans looking from the outside, it has always been hard to get a grasp of what this team is up to... who's healthy, who's playing, who's here, who's not staying... so the cloak-iness that other W fans are experiencing about their rosters during this pandemic feels quite familiar around here. We set the expectations bar low, and then brace for the Dream to sneak under.

Hoopism adds that at least one of Glory or Court will be sharing something today, too. Hopefully just that they've saved a bunch of money on car insurance.

I hope and assume it'll be Williams as we've been given no word on why she's not there.

Kalani receiving her test results several days after arriving in the Wubble (tested before leaving, but result came late? or, C+ acquired after arriving?) helps me to understand the nature of Coy Cathy's recent answer about publicizing the protocols and results of mass testing a little better.

She’s on her way in.

Does this mean McCall will get kicked to the curb?
I wonder if she appeals to Kolb or the Lib fans?

And yet still no word on Williams other than she's showing up at some point. McCall may get released by the end of next week if Brown and Johnson are ready.

Probably some other team will need a player and she is already in the bubble.

The Emergency Hardship is created by being down to under 10 players, so as soon as any of the 3 missing players returns, McCall has to be released. Doesn't need two of them.

Mercury might pick her up as they only have 10.

As mentioned elsewhere, assuming moderately standard cap rules, they don't have the space to add a 12th player yet. And being down to 10 doesn't get you either Hardship Exception.

Why? McCall's shown nothing in her three years in the League, and unless she really wows with the Dream, she should be leaving the bubble permanently when Johnson or someone else gets cleared to play. I have to wonder if she's only still in the League because she's DeWanna Bonner's sister...

The bigger question is, does the league send McCall home or keep her in the bubble in case another team needs to sign her?

Purely speculation, but... is one Mr. Don Williams doing alright?

In-state, our worst per-capita COVID caseloads have been in the southern Georgia counties, the easternmost ones like Charlton as of late. As the league kicks off in a few hours, the last social media post I saw from him was a couple weeks ago.

Brown was symptomatic. Hope they caught her early enough to not infect others.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/basketball/wnba-dream-player-brown-positive-coronavirus-remains-quarantine/

Quote:
Atlanta Dream centre Kalani Brown tested positive for the coronavirus on July 9 and remains under quarantine as the team prepares to play in the WNBA bubble.

In a statement released by the team, Brown says she has battled “challenging” symptoms including headache, sore throat, chills, body aches, fatigue, loss of the sense of taste, and shortness of breath.

Brown says she is feeling better but won’t be able to play when the Dream open the season on Sunday against Dallas.
