Well, I’m not trying to bring hellfire down on people. I’m trying to take and post what John Szarkowski would dignify as ‘photographs.’ But if I were trying to bust people it would not be hard though because I certainly have the mere snaps to do that.

But nevertheless you can see some of the lax mask wearing in my world here.

Like this guy in image number 5. Isn’t this an N95 mask? Heartbreaking story was happening concurrent to when this image was taken and that is a nurse ran into the room of a COVID patient who was coding here in LA with only a surgical mask. Dead 14 days later. A mom. But this rich prick is wearing one she sure could have used on his elbow.

Just to add to your irritation, allow me to point out that the mask in question is a valved mask, which is either for industrial use or some knockoff, because it's not standard for healthcare N95's to have valves.. Those valves are one-way, close when the wearer inhales to protect him from particles in the air, then open during exhalation, allowing anything contained in his exhaled breath directly into the air around him. This is exactly the opposite of what the public wearing of masks is supposed to accomplish in our current situation. So I'd submit that having it somewhere besides on his face is fine by me. It's not protecting anyone else either way, and maybe we can get lucky and he'll be eliminated from the gene pool.

All kidding aside, from those photos, it's easy to see that the vast majority of our population has no idea why, when, and how they're supposed to wear a mask. When was the last time anyone saw a PSA on that? Never. And none of them know that an N95 has to be specially fitted and tested to be effective, nor how to take it off and store it if they plan to reuse it. And that valved masks are currently banned in a lot of places.

New Yorkers seem over it

we have had two beautiful days in a row here and everyone is out.

Streets are busy, last night tons of stoop sitting with wine and kids Prospect park was filled with people walking their dogs, their kids, small picnics, teens getting high, bikers, joggers. All the stores that are open have lines to get in, there were bars doing street service, lines for take out, people getting take out and eating it on the corner, or in their cars, or the park or the stoop.

Most are still trying to social distance but the volume of people out compared to the beginning of April has tripled so you encounter more people and it is harder on sidewalks and in stores to not sometimes pass by people at an arms length. Most are wearing face covering it is technically mandatory in all enclosed public spaces (store, subway, etc.) say 75% (maybe 50% if the person is biking or jogging or a child a decent amount of parents in masks with a child not in one) but there are some say 1 in 3 with face coverings wearing it under the nose or wearing it around the neck and only pulling it up when they go in a store. Clearly anyone who was eating, drinking or smoking outside last night were only wearing their face covering around their neck.

It doesn't feel like there is an active attempt to rebel, or screw over other people, it feels more like people have been doing there best for the past two months and their resolve is crumbling. In NY the death rate has dropped (still 150 yesterday but compared to 500+ for weeks and a high of 800 it doesn't seem as bad), hospitalization are down, all the field hospitals have closed, it kind of feels like people think they either had it or aren't going to get it if they haven't got it yet. And the good weather is the last straw in the equation that has pushed people out the doors.

Because of this new attitude (people were really good about it for about 6 weeks, it really was a ghost town) I will be surprised if the city doesn't start phase one of opening back up after the next two week period or set date of review.

Even if this idea turns out to be wrong it does feel as if the city has decided that the worst is over for NY while the rest of the country is on an uptick.

These are just observations not an attempt to argue a point of view one way or the other.

The same can be said for NJ. Parks have been re-opened for two weeks now and beaches just re-opened this weekend. Capacity limits are in place, but judging by today, most parks looked busy. Beaches didn't look too crowded. Belmar's beach had a line two miles long to purchases beach badges as their website kept crashing. And likely for the first time since NJ went into isolation, there was a good amount of traffic today. On a Saturday. Even with parks hitting capacity(50%), everyone was following the rules. This weekend is/was gorgeous and I'm sure it's gotten to people that they just don't want to be cooped up inside anymore. Even my local Target was slightly crowded the other day. I know a few friends that will be going back to their offices the day after Memorial Day or on June 1. Nobody wants to go back into isolation and it appears as though the majority of people are following the rules. I also live by a mall, and though it is closed, there's been plenty of small-ish parking lot gatherings. It'll be interesting to see if Gov. Murphy goes into the next phase by June 7. I'm thinking so as long as nothing gets our of hand the next few weeks and nobody has a big BBQ over Memorial Day weekend.

Outdoorsy stuff like hanging out at parks & beaches seems like it's very low risk anyway, so I'm happy to see that stuff opening up in places like NY & NJ. You'd have to be pretty unlucky to get infected from someone else in a park.

Originally NY wasn't going to open the beaches

now it looks like they are going to open the beaches but

you won't be able to swim, wtf

The theory behind this is that because most of the beaches Coney Island, Brighton beach, the Rockaways, orchard beach, long beach, jones beach all the way out to Montauk long Island are public, there has to be life guards on duty and NY will save 12 million dollars by not having life guards

and yes they could pay some life guards but the limited amount of guards would limit the areas where people could swim and therefor make it impossible to social distance while swimming even though the beaches themselves are miles long

of course they will now have to pay more parks/guards to patrol the beaches and kick people out of the water if they go in, or actually give out fines or summonses

before corona when the life guards go off duty say at Coney, Brighton or the Rockaway beaches at 6pm, everyone gets out of the water and 10 minutes later everyone goes back in, every 30 minutes or so a guard on a ATV comes by blows the whistle and people get out and after the guard continues down the beach everyone goes back this is after 6pm so how it will work in the middle of the day is beyond me. (I usually go down to Brighton beach because it is a predominantly Russian area, and not to stereotype but all the old Russians are basically like FU to the guards to the point where they don't even patrol that part of the beach).

My guess is that by Mid June they will either give in and put life guards on the beaches or give up and close the beaches all together.

The original issue with NYC closing their beaches was that people would then drive into NJ for their beaches. I'm glad they will be open now. NJ beaches have lifeguards while swimming and sunbathing is allowed, so I'm sure there will still be New Yorkers traveling over to use NJ beaches.

Saw an article recently that talked about Omaha, Nebraska and the Spanish Flu. After a period of time with restrictions, the mayor "reopened". But then cases went up to where he might have shut things down, but he felt it would be bad politically to go backwards. I heard someone say that on TV with regard to today. It will be seen as politically harmful to themselves by any politicians considering shutting things back down after reopening. California just recorded a daily record for COVID-19 deaths . They say that other metrics are encouraging, such as hospitalizations down more than 15% (doesn't sound like a significant decline to me) from a peak six weeks ago. LA County is being the most cautious, but one supervisor mentions the economic damage with continued closures:

Quote:
“The longer we stay closed in certain sectors, particularly small businesses and restaurants, the odds are that they will not be able to come back,” Supervisor Janice Hahn said. “I feel that we have to get to the point that we learn to live with the virus. We cannot stay locked down forever.”

I just heard on the news that a Bay Area chain of Panera-breadish restaurants that is only open M-F 8 to 6:30 has decided to go out of business. They opened their first place 33 years ago. Nice place that had a Peet's coffee co-located inside of it.

Virginia is “reopening” today. The federal guideline is that states do that after 14 days of declining cases. Virginia reported their highest daily total of new cases yesterday. If you hit the record while “closed” seems a sure thing they beat that after reopening.

Virginia still hitting new records through the end of May including one on Monday the 25th. Northern Virginia is the worst and was not included in the Phase 1 opening but wants to be included in Phase 2 even though it is not yet in Phase 1, but hopes to be on the 28th.

I was talking to a 70 something overweight male ex-coworker and he told me he went to Safeway and they required masks but had them for sale for $3.50. So he bought one, but said he had one at home as well. Then the next time he went shopping he went to a Chinese market because it didn't require masks (more likely didn't have the personnel to enforce it). The city of San Jose where he lives gave a requirement to wear masks a week or two ago.

Do you know how Matt Taibbi described it? He said the press is HELPING Trump. Playing into his hands. Because the American people can see what they’re doing. Selected and twisting things that the clumsy oaf says and harping on them for days. And it’s turning them off.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking and saying that for years. But that’s Matt Taibbi, author of Inside the Republican Clown Car. Oh I’m sure he’s long fallen out of favor with our side. But he’s not a Republican. Neither am I. You and I both wanted the same person to be elected president in November. Bernie Sanders. Yes, it should concern you that people who are on your side are seeing and saying these things. In the sense that they are really meant as warnings. Not in the sense that they are things you have to stop from being said.

So I’m saying this to you as a person who wants the exact same RESULT from our American political system. We wanted the same kind of socialist for president we’ve wanted probably our entire politically aware lives. We’re wearing the same uniform. On the same side. In the foxhole together. I’m asking you.

Could you please stop haunting every thing I say about Trump?

Please? It feels like you are policing me. it always feels like that with you. It has a chilling effect on my willingness to even come to Rebkells. YOU are doing that. To me. I want what you want as political outcomes. On Rebkells, however, I want to express my thoughts from every angle. I want to use every ounce of the nuance I have left until the gray curtain starts to descend on my awareness. I like doing that here. I always have. You’re making me uncomfortable.

How did we get here already in this thread? Is it because I dared to say that Trump is smarter than what it is permissible by you to be said? You couldn’t hear that? Forgive me. Please. It wasn’t meant as a compliment. You called him cunning. Okay. Replace my word smart with cunning. That’s what I meant anyway. Shocked

I just read the above. Wow. I'm not being dismissive here, but I feel you're overreacting to a simple difference of opinion. I'm sorry my disagreement makes you uncomfortable and that you think I'm "policing" you- I'm not. Yours is just another post here. I reserve the right to disagree and I don't feel I've pushed the bounds of decorum, much less broken any site rules. I hope you understand.

Do you react as strongly when we agree?

Trump has gotten a major pass from the press. 3+ years and 10,000+ blatant lies in and he has yet to be called a pathological liar. His every word is presented as if it's factually worthy. His mental and physical condition is never questioned. The guy is literally a sociopath. The press treats him with kid gloves, and just because he reacts as if he's been asked a "mean question" (christ, the guy is SUCH A FUCKING PUSSY) doesn't mean he has been.

He's a piece of shit that needs to be removed from office ASAP, along with the rest of the #ToxicGOP.

But yeah, he's a pretty sharp, devious, grifting POS.

This is trolling. But more on that in a second.

It’s also not mere cursing, it’s really foul and offensive language. And it says something. Very emphatically. It communicates something across the landscape of this message board that some of us used to care so much about. It says that there’s a guy here in Area 51 on Rebkell’s who takes this politics stuff to the extremes of employing the most toxic and offensive words and name calling that he can think up to lay a cloud of napalm to the discussions here.

Where is the room here for someone who might disagree with you? Yep. I think you've kind of stomped out the possibility of anything like that happening. I’m not seeing much of a space where someone with simply a more nuanced perspective on Trump would even bother. Because my personal experience, as that very person, has been that here you will invariably be here to take a flamethrower to any actual discussion that seeks to examine this fraught subject bringing anything like an inquisitive nuanced perspective.

I don’t know if you’re a person who knows this about yourself or doesn’t know this about yourself. That doesn't matter to me. But I know this about you. I’ve known it for years. Too many years. Do you know how many times you’ve been tossed off this message board? Neither do I. That’s how many times. Three times in the last three years alone. You’ve never been able to not do this.

But there’s more. Again, this isn't simply voicing an opinion. This is trolling. And the person you’re trolling is me. When I start to put the squeeze on you, as I did recently, for trolling me, you drop this stuff somewhere where I’m not, so you can claim to be just innocently voicing an opinion on a message board, but, of course, somewhere where you know I'll see it.

You actually think that’s giving you cover. That's not a question. You DO!

That's what you don’t understand. You can't get cover from me. There’s only one person here who will look at what you’re posting, get what you’re up to, and make the decision about what to do about it.

And that's the person you’re trolling?

You did this same thing last year. Very same subject matter, same tactic. And I bounced you. The other guy bounced you twice before I did. This is just in the last three years. I warned you that you're playing with a permanent ban. The bans were changed to one month because we don’t want to lock people out of this place. But after someone’s been banned three times in three years and untold times before that? Yeah, permanently banning that person is on the table.

So let's step off the subject of focused intentional trolling and whatever it is inside you that compels you to do this. And let's just take you as if you're just an innocent person with strong opinions.

Try to imagine a small social gathering of intelligent informed people. And basically everybody’s on the same side politically. But people like to analyze and pick apart the details. How things are playing in battleground states. Is this tactic working? Are some things our side is doing self-defeating? And I’ll pull up something you said in another thread.

So people are having this conversation about politics and Trump... and from over in the corner of the room suddenly you burst forth with this.

cthskzfn wrote:

Over three years in. There's been the Mueller investigation. The impeachment. That's all baked into the cake and he's still there. People are having a serious discussion, and this cthskzfn dude over in the corner is just not having any of it.

Suddenly things go POP.

He's a piece of shit that needs to be removed from office ASAP, along with the rest of the #ToxicGOP.

ASAP! DID I SAY ASAP? I MEAN ASAP! HE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE ASAP!

Shocked

That's YOU man! That's who you are.

And you do this ALL THE TIME. FOR YEARS. And that's aside from the trolling. Like some resistance Twitter account, or a Russian bot, this is your contribution here.

So how do you think a guy who, even innocently, posts these foul outbursts and what are now impotent nonsense interjections like Trump needs to be removed from office ASAP fits in with the concept of a message board where people by and large resist coming off like hoary flamethrowers? People who are respectful of the place, the people who come here, all sides and viewpoints, etc?

Like this?

Quote:
"I laugh at MAGAmorons, or anyone else, who think this douche is some kind of tough guy. Biggest pussy president in my lifetime. No offense to pussies."

Once or twice is understandable. These are heated times. Trump is for the most part a maddening presence. But three years of these kinds of outbursts is enough.

It's funny that it took so long. When Obama was elected we got a post from a moderator before he even took office warning about name-calling, insults, patronising, unqualified psychiatric diagnoses, etc. Once we're back to a Republican president all that is fine until halfway through the last year of his term.

Lies such as that hydroxychloroquine is still being considered as treatment or prevention for COVID. ALL studies into chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have been shut down due to having zero benefit and extensive damage (death)to those who take it. So why can a person post that it is still being considered and if a person directly challenges the lie, then they are the one who is banned?

To focus on the hydroxychlorine issue, both of the studies in The Lancet and NEJM which cited lack of efficacy and potential harm during its usage in COVID cases have been retracted this week because it seems that the CEO of the company that provided the data (Dr Sapan Desai of Surgisphere) has a history of dubious research protocols and possible misconduct. The papers' authors who relied on his data have called for an independent third-party analysis, and other researchers are vocal about a possible premature dismissal of hydroxychloroquine for COVID.

My take is that it likely doesn't work and may cause harm, but these recent developments have really muddied the waters.
