Do you really think Trump was aware of that guy saying "white power" when he (or his staff) tweeted it?

Yes.

The alternative is that they don't care what they're tweeting.

It's also entirely irrelevant.

The question is why people think he is a racist. The answer is that he Tweets out racist shit like this. No matter if it was intentional or carelessness, if you put stuff out there like this with your name attached people are going to perceive you in a a certain way.

I think people perceive Trump as racist because Democrats and Never Trumpers are constantly saying he is in print and on TV. If he criticizes a person who is not white, or a city which is majority non-white, or non-white countries, they promptly tell us repeatedly that those statements were actually a criticism of an entire race. The fact that he criticizes/denigrates anybody who criticizes him, or that the cities and countries he criticized have major flaws, is ignored.

He deleted this re-tweet and I seem to recall a couple other re-tweets that got quickly deleted. So quickly that I can’t even recall what they were and I doubt there is any significant amount of people who do. But the “Trump is a racist” preceded any of those re-tweets. It started when he condemned illegal aliens as rapists and criminals that Mexico was getting rid of. In fact, I would bet that is all it took for people to consider him a racist. Just being against illegal immigration gets cries of racism from people in the USA in the 21st Century - the press refuses to even use the term “illegal”. In fact, after Trump denigrated illegal aliens the press and Democrats dropped their latest euphemism (illegal alien -> illegal immigrant -> undocumented immigrant) and just started calling them immigrants. Which also allows them to make the false claim that Trump is “anti-immigrant”. We are at a surreal moment when illegal immigration is a sacred cow to a majority of the population. Not a single person in the media or politics has concluded (or is willing to take the fire) that getting rid of millions of illegal workers would be a good idea despite massive unemployment and a newfound concern for the economic conditions of black Americans.

Ironically, Trump isn’t even against illegal immigration as demonstrated by the fact that he never calls for E-Verify to be required to be used by all employers or for them to be severely punished if caught hiring illegal workers or for the USA to try to find out who is hiring those millions of illegal workers. Not to mention the fact that despite bellowing about building a wall for a year and a half, when he was sworn in he was OK with a Republican Congress giving him nothing for a wall. Only the outrage of a few conservative commentators after they lost the House, which may have also caused the realization that a 2020 run without a single inch of wall built would be untenable, got him to try and build enough that he could claim he did something (I saw the other day he is up to 13 miles of NEW - not replacement - “wall”).

There is also the alternative that they saw people in golf carts supporting Trump and cared about that and didn’t realize a guy shouted “white power”. It’s not like “white power” is something you would expect to be shouted in public in 2020 on the streets of a Florida retirement community.

"Trump is a racist" had been around for much longer than he has been president.

He was a major Obama "Birther" conspiracy theorist, which was racist as hell, there was all the shit he said surrounding the Central Park 5, and he got into legal trouble for being racist in his real estate dealings.

So, yes, now when he Tweets out explicitly racist things people are going think "This dude is a racist asshole". He has literally done nothing to try and change people's perceptions of this.

While I am sure there is some non-racist reasons to focus on immigration, when you take someone with his track record and combine it with the over-the-top language he uses on immigration and it should be no surprise that people feel he is using immigration as a way to get racists to vote for him (and intentionally stoking the racists for your own gain is, in fact, racist).
