I take the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you today that I have put life and death before you, the blessing and the curse; and you must chose life so that you may live, you and your descendants. (Deuteronomy 30:19)
Turn away from bad and do what is good, and you will remain forever. The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it. (Psalm 37: 27 & 29)

Somebody responding has 3 teams:

Good. Definitely Winning Against Them! Good News For My,
@wnbachicagosky @IndianaFever And @DallasWings ! #WNBA

But I feel the asterisk someone mentions in reply. Seems like an asterisk season even if no one opts out.

Just make sure to put an asterisk next to the wins after more players opt out. She wasn’t the first to opt out and definitely won’t be the last

Do we asterisk seasons when an inordinate number of top players get injured?

Adapting to what players you have available is all part of sports, and injury luck plays a huge part in which teams will win every year.

The format and the length might make it feel weird for a bit, but not so much that it will have some lasting notoriety.

Yeah, the 'asterisk' would be far more for the weirdness and brevity of the season than for whoever opts out. Unusual shit could happen, like when the NBA lockout shortened the 1999 season and we ended up with an 8-seed in the Finals. The stranger the format and the shorter the season, the more randomness is introduced.

But on some level, a ring is a ring is a ring. They'd raise a banner (eventually) in whichever city won the title, even if they win it in an empty gym in the middle of Florida.

Sources have informed me... Natasha Cloud is one of the players who does not want to play, and I’m hearing Mystic players are standing together to not play this year with Cloud leading the way.

Cloud saw that tweet and laughed at it in response (back on the 15th), but I mean... Cloud is indeed sitting out now, sooooo...........

Meesseman has announced she's traveling over to the US on Thursday, so that dispells the rumors the whole team is sitting out.

I never expected the entire team to sit out (such as their younger unproven players), but hey, there's still time for there to be more. We'll find out soon enough. The first part of that rumor, no matter how predictable it was, was still absolutely true; so imo she probably shouldn't have responded to it like it was 100% garbage. Rolling Eyes

Hayes was the first player to publicly grumble about getting the old CBA money. Could be a factor.

That raises an interesting question. Does this still count as a year on her contract even though she's voluntarily choosing not to play?

Especially since she has actually been paid some on this year of her contract. It would seem hard to argue that it doesn't count.

A year runs off contracts when people skip the year entirely. In a year where she received 1/6th of the salary, it definitely runs off.

So much for small ball with NY this year or do they use someone else in her place that can shoot the 3 >? Maybe Kia at the 4 ?

Is this going to be an Australian trend? Let’s ask Cambage and Whitcomb.

Will Brondello opt out?

Whitcomb is heading over, apparently.
Not much point asking Cambage since words and actions do not always align with her.

Does Whitcomb live in Australia when she's not playing there? I figured she lived in Seattle most of the year.

Yes, she lives here in Perth when not playing in Seattle or Europe (i.e. not very much in recent years, until Covid came along)

Megdal tweeting out that the deadline is now 5pm today, but that's likely not set in stone. Also says there's a lot of TBD happening now. Unless the league enforces some kind of penalty for opting out past the deadline, players will be waiting until they get on a plane before deciding. Might see some rosters with just 9 or 10 players at the start in Florida.

They can set a deadline for medical opt outs after which they won't be paid. Otherwise players can choose to leave whenever.
