‘It’s really cutthroat:’ In a year harder than most to make a WNBA roster, rookies contemplate next steps after being cut, deciding to sit out or making a team
https://www.courant.com/sports/hc-sp-wnba-rookie-class-20200530-20200601-r4i2c43nofckvbitmoaedcpnca-story.html

This article is mostly about Gillespie, but there’s a small part at the end about Charles.

Quote:
Kaila Charles knows that her work isn’t over just because she landed a spot on the Sun’s roster. The two rookies Connecticut started the 2019 season with (Kristine Anigwe and Bridget Carleton) were either traded or waived by early August.
“It’s really cutthroat in a way,” said Charles, who was taken No. 23 overall. “I wish we could have more teams and then more people could play. But it is very hard to make a roster, and I see that now, actually experiencing it.”
Even though she made the cut, she’s seen what happened this year with her peers. Five of the 12 teams didn’t keep a 2020 draft selection. Charles was the sole player selected in the second half of the draft to make a roster.

Quote:
Sun coach/general manager Curt Miller said it’s possible the Sun would bring back one of their recent cuts when they’re able to add a 12th player during the season, similar to how Natisha Hiedeman — a rookie drafted out of Marquette who was cut in training camp last year — was later brought back.

What do we have, about 4 or 5 teams that could do this?

I wonder if Miller could be salivating over the thought of signing Mompremier? That’s like getting two projected first round picks back after you needed to burn first round picks acquiring Bonner. Blind GM’s like Padover and Reeve will let it happen.

So for a team like Connecticut, I'm guessing they'll theoretically be able to add a 12th player before the players have to report, given that a 12th player at the onset of the finalized rosters would've only thrown them over the cap by a little (if my understanding of their cap situation is correct). There's nowhere stating they'll have to wait until the actual games begin to add a 12th player since players are now getting paid as if a season is going on.

Is this all correct?

For teams like the Sun and the Sky, if they wish to add a player later do you know if they need to be quarantined for a couple of weeks before they can enter the WNBA bubble or join their team ? I'm assuming the current proposal that's out there is the way forward.

There’s very little detail out there, other than it sounds like a 13-day training camp.

The thing is, typically the remaining space you'd need for a player is judged by how much of the season has been played (or is left). But this year they started paying people on June 1, before games began. So, potentially, they might decide the space you need by how far along we are from June 1 until whatever they set as the end-date. In which case Connecticut are already probably on the brink of being able to sign their 12th player. Chicago had much less space.

But yes, whoever teams want to add will inevitably have to follow whatever protocols they put in place. It frankly feels like it'd be worthwhile bringing, say, 8-10 unattached players into the bubble from the start. They could be practice players, and then a pool teams could sign from immediately without waiting. But someone would have to cover the cost of that, so it probably won't happen.

Makes the Sun very weak inside now. Does Plaisance start at center? Brionna Jones? Do they pick-up someone like Mompremier?

Right now I don't think they can pick anyone up. They're only down to 10, and they don't have the cap space to add a 12th. But it's obviously all a bit complicated and unusual.

Start Holmes/Bonner/AThomas as your frontcourt and just try to smallball everybody?

I have to imagine the league will allow the hardship rule to go into place for these "opt-outs". What if another Sun player opts-out?

Then hardship applies, because two players would be out long-term. Same old rule, I expect.

JJones doesn’t get paid for opting out, other than the weeks she pick-pocketed while she was deciding if she really wanted to play, so why would she count against the cap? Guaranteed salaries shouldn’t apply if a player opts out. Just like Maya doesn’t get paid for sitting out.

This has really got to hurt Connecticut. They’re one of the teams that went ALL-IN on this season by acquiring Bonner and breaking up the band. My bet is that Connecticut will lose at least one of the Thomases next year because they’ll no longer be affordable.

Much as I hate to admit it, yeah, fair point. Got my made-up rules mixed up. Assuming Jones doesn't have a medical reason for opting out (and none has been mentioned in her statements), then her cost would be scaled down to $30,833 and the Sun would have room to add not just one but presumably two players (as they only started with 11).

Gives B. Jones a legitimate (last?) chance to actually do something, with J. Jones not in the fold this year.

The Sun have also signed Mompremier. It'll be a trial by fire with who starts at center with those two and Plaisance.

No doubt it'll be a battle. I can see no one particularly outshining the others between those three players - although, Mompremier is by far the most athletic. Still, as a Sun 'veteran', it'll probably be B. Jones' spot to lose since Miller really talked her up at the beginning of last season as likely to having a breakout year (though as we know, that didn't pan out whatsoever).

Connecticut might be in trouble. I wonder if Bonner has any regrets?

She's a mother , i would not be shocked or upset if she opted out. It's not worth risking your family. Unless Dupree has opted in as well , then that kind of kills that notion .
