Announced this morning:
Upcoming season will still be 21 games per team
Regular season will commence in late November instead of the usual mid October, and finish early March instead of late January.

Hopefully (LJ hinted at it this morning) there is some good news re. TV broadcast rights to come in the near future.

There is also some talk of players like Cambage & Whitcomb - who would normally play overseas - participating in the WNBL this season. On the flipside we might see very few imports in the league.

Is there any chance of Perth finding an owner or will the state association be running the show for the foreseeable future?

Are immigration actions all delayed right now? It sounded like a few NBL1 imports were somewhere in the process of applying for permanent residency, including one or two that might be WNBL contributors.

As far as we know, Liz was a UK citizen at birth, right? Given China not being as great of an option and FIBA's rule change, it would be interesting to see her in Europe in the near future since she would not count as foreign anymore. Cambage and Fenerbahce is the soap opera we need these days.

It sounds like Kunek will play in Europe again, but there appears to be confusion on whether she counts as non-naturalized in the rules. Besides people like Ciabattoni and Romeo who have played for a European national team, are there other dual nationals who we think would qualify? Nakkasoglu obviously played in Europe and Burton has been playing there with Panousis also making a move recently. Presumably Blicavs would count too.

Announced today: restricted (i.e. foreign) players won't be participating in the WNBL this coming season.

Also, free agency starts today in a few hours.

Haven't heard anything official yet but my understanding is that there will be some kind of transitional arrangement with the state association running the team and the Wildcats still providing financial support.

I do wonder if the likes of Cambage, Mitchell, Whitcomb, etc. will play in the WNBL as it may be their only choice.

Gotta love the league teasing a big announcement and then it was free agency... which has to happen every season no matter what.

I guess Ruef being on the list means that her paperwork was completed.

There were a lot of cases on the women's side in the latest round of BAT cases.

The mystery situation with Becca Tobin last season is still unclear, but FIBA awarded her money from Bendigo:

Latest rumours suggest that the WNBL season will still happen, but be super-condensed - WNBA-style - but with hubs in 2 or 3 Queensland cities rather than just a single hub.
14 games per team in the space of a month, and the playoffs reverting back to the old single game system rather than 3 game series.
The strangest aspect to me is that apparently it will start in mid-November and be finished by Christmas.

(With Australia currently doing well with suppressing its Covid 2nd wave, I would have thought that starting in the new year might bring better crowds back into the equation. But maybe they want to finish ASAP to give players more time to pursue overseas opportunities, or perhaps there is some clearer television air in Nov-Dec)

Random piece of WNBL-related news:
The 2020 AFLW (Aussie Rules Football league that Erin Phillips is a star of) draft just finished, and Tessa Lavey was selected at #43 overall (out of 60 total picks)

Big announcement today that all games this season will be viewable, consisting of
- 4 games per week being shown on both Foxtel (cable) and Kayo (streaming)
- 2 of the above games also being shown on ABC (Free To Air, and iView free streaming service)
- All remaining games on Kayo only

By WNBL standards it's a very nice deal. This league has never had this combination of quantity & quality of coverage.
Will be interesting to see if anyone down here tunes in. With no men's league to compete with for attention it's a good opportunity to gain some viewers.
https://wnbl.basketball/blog/news/basketball-australia-scores-with-wnbl-broadcast-deal/

Not that there will be too much overseas interest in the league with no import players participating this season, but apparently the ABC Australia iView app (iPhone/Android) works outside of Australia.

Is FLB considered a foreigner or will she play in the WNBL?

Nah, it's only FIBA international competition where she is classified as a restricted player. She plays WNBL as an aussie, same as Griffin, Ruef, Schwagmeyer, Rintala & Whitcomb (who is not actually playing as her wife is due to give birth very soon)
New Zealanders (of which the Melbourne Boomers have several) are also unrestricted.

There are obviously a lot of people there that I know nothing about, but Southside look scary. Basically a bunch of gunners scattered around Cambage.

Yeah, you clearly know enough to see what has happened here.
Canberra & Melbourne have put together pretty strong teams, (Perth was looking good too until Whitcomb & Allen withdrew) but the league could probably send the trophy up to Queensland with the Flyers already engraved on it.

Good to see Sharna Thompson caught on somewhere as a development player. Given that I do not know how many more years Kathleen Scheer has as a professional basketball player, it definitely would have been fun to see a season of her, Thompson, and Heal in Hobart.

Assuming Perth's rookie Emma Clarke is the same player currenlty listed as a redshirt transfer for Texas Tech? Also Canberra's Jade Melbourne is supposed to play at ASU in 2021. What actually are the laws here?

Did Sami decide not to play because she wanted to be with her wife and newborn?

Yes. A fairly recent decision by her to stay in Australia.

Laws-wise there shouldn't be any problem. The WNBL has provision for contracts that are NCAA-compliant.
Michelle89 wrote:

Correct. Given the timing of Sami's exit from the WNBA playoffs I'm assuming that newborn must be due to arrive very soon.

The league has no doubt taken some inspiration from what the WNBA did when putting together its RISE UP initiative:
RISE UP means this WNBL season will be unique, and even bigger than basketball

And Liz has been proactive with including a complaint about the referees among her comments to the media on the eve of the season:
'I swore I wouldn't be back': Cambage's surprise return a chance to talk Olympics, race and fertility

Less than 24 hours until the season tips off...

FIBA's YouTube will show at least some games outside of Australia. Here are the first two games:

Cool!
Seems like overseas fans will have better free coverage than aussie fans

Kinda like international fans getting free ESPN games over League Pass.

The next two games:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXNycybFVN0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0SPquorkaI

It looks like all the games will be added to this playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCXERy73Oiz8aC0yLfLPuFpJvhvxbfC6s

The Australian preference for nicknaming can get confusing. I was trying to figure out what I should be calling Rocci and sometimes she is Maddie and other times she is Maddy so I am going with Maddison this season.
