| I’m sure Shades and Space would have something to say about Reeve being the #1 seed while Van sits at #2 . He won 4 straight for geez sakes !! Never been accomplished again. I’d swap those two seeds.

Maybe you could have done 32, but there's some notable exclusions. Not that any of them would've won, but it make for some interesting challenges. Miller's Mercury team was a game away from winning the 1998 title.
Carol Ross: 58-32 record(Sparks '12-'14)
Sonny Allen: 46-30 record(Monarchs '98-'01)
Cheryl Miller: 70-52 record(Mercury '97-'00)
Brian Winters: 78-58 record(Fever '04-'07)

We discussed 32 or 24. We also discussed an even smaller field.
16 meant we got every coach with a ring and every coach with multiple finals appearances, a total of 15 coaches, plus one extra.

I was thinking the same thing - would be more fun to debate who was worse. You left out Trudy Lacey. Also, where is Amber Stocks. Not the worst, but "in the conversation." :) |
Lacey's combined numbers aren't half bad due to her first two years in Charlotte. But her two seasons in DC are one of the worst. Stocks' record isn't even in the top 10 worst. Her record was 25-43 in her two seasons with Chicago.

Celebrity hires -- Cowens, Edwards, Richardson -- are usually a bad idea.
And to bang my drum again, being a good player requires a different skill set than being a good coach.

Of course if he hadn't worked out, Laimbeer would be considered part of that list. So there are exceptions. |

Back to the best discussion: Van Chancellor not only had the best players, the level of coaching in the early days was pretty bad -- and some that were good (Brian Agler) were in the ABL.
So Van doesn't get my vote, at least in the later rounds.

Interesting that you jumped right into who you are not selecting as the best coach (a “just not him” tone). I don’t disagree that with your argument but the man NEVER had a bench and that’s because he was a horrid GM. I do wonder how well Thibault would’ve fared with Reeve’s rosters. However, you can’t give credit for what-ifs and you can’t discredit for what-ifs either. Cheryl did what needed to be done.
One thing I heard from players in ‘99 coming from the ABL is that the major difference between both leagues was the WNBA had better coaching.
Nonetheless, who is your pick for the best coach and why?
It might be Laimbeer for turning the worst franchise into a dynasty and doing a respectable job with an expansion team.

Actually, I'm not sure. This process will be fun for just that reason.
I don't particularly care for Laimbeer, but he's awfully good.
