They have to first make the team before it even becomes an issue. Many of these players will not make the team.

They need numbers for the preseason

The junior player gives up their number to the senior player.

A superstar junior player might be able to sway a marginal senior player to give up the number.

To me, the trickiest one here would be Alarie vs Anigwe. I’m not seeing Anigwe as being the sweet and giving type to the new rook that could take her post spot away. I guess that might be one way to get the number, if it’s that important. Some players are really attached to their number. Some don’t really care.

Bella Alarie wore #4 in High School, #14 for Team USA and #31 at Princeton.

Her dad, Mark Alarie, wore #15 in high school, #32 at Duke and #31 in the NBA.

I doubt this is a big deal for her, or most of the other players.

Some of them, like Cox, have their uniform number in their twitter handle. That suggests it might be of some importance.

They can always change their Twitter handle.

I'm going to guess Dangerfield is switching to #2 to honor Gigi Bryant? otherwise I can't think of any other good reason why not stay #5 (Linnae Harper shouldn't have dibs).
