I think with the Olympics postponed, they move to early June at least. They need to fill in those three weeks in August now anyways. Maybe there's an outside chance they add an All-star game since we won't get one next season.

As for the owners, we know that Simon Properties (Fever owners) have closed all their shopping malls and there are a lot of them. So that's potential problem. Another problem is that nearly all casinos in the country are closed so that might impact the Sun or Aces. Next we know all the NBA teams are not playing so the money tree planted next to the Mercury, Liberty, Fever, Lynx and Mystics may be withering, not to mention whatever general support the NBA gives the WNBA. Finally, ESPN is owned by Disney whose parks are closed. Disney has Disney+ now a new streaming service which might be benefiting from all the people sheltering in place. I don't know how it works but doesn't seem like ESPN would be all that interesting to watch now and have few eyeballs to sell.
As a general matter the franchise owners are generally wealthy individuals and such people usually have a of $ in the stock market. Consequently - their net worth has probably gone down a lot. Around the time of the 2008 debacle 2 teams folded (Houston and Sacramento) and two others almost did (Dream and Shock - now Wings.) The latter 2 found new owners the former folded. Perhaps fans of the other teams can add to this.
Bottom line - no reason now to think any team will go under, but a lot of bad news out there and some reasons to be concerned. |
What would be interesting to me is if we somehow had a scenario where the W was improbably the League out of all of them to start back up. Even if fans weren't allowed in, the sports-starved public would actually have something to watch. Of course, that'll pretty much never happen so long as the League continues to take a back seat to the NBA, which already has a season in-progress to finish. Regardless, imo Engelbert should at least be considering exploring a way to make that happen in order to capitalize on the potential of getting some extra eyes on the League that would normally never be available.

I think mid May is quite optimistic, but I think your "canary in the coal mine" idea is plausible. I could see the W experimenting (for the NBA) with "social distancing" seating and other ideas to make attendance plausible. The W seldom fills up arena's anyway.

I doubt the WNBA ends up going first just because of how much money is involved for leagues like the NBA. They'll want to get back up and running, with or without fans, as soon as is remotely justifiable. Don't think they'll wait for anyone else to test the waters. |

The NBA likely starts first with their playoffs in empty arenas. Maybe the WNBA starts the week after. Hoping for mid-June. Trying to be optimistic.

It could be that we see some relocation for 2021 as certainly WNBA owners are going to be seriously affected.
Arena availability is also going to be interesting, as concerts and events that are postponed are going to try to reschedule as soon as possible -- and if an arena can put 15,000 people in seats for a monster truck event, it would make sense to choose that over a WNBA game with 4,500.
Interesting times, indeed ...

Engelbert mentioned they're working on various delays to the schedule, as late as a 90-day delay. I'm glad she's very optimistic and hopefully we'll have a season.

The article below is ostensibly about the draft, but there is also stuff about a possible season. It sounds like the commissioner really wants some kind of season to happen:
Quote: |
Playing games this year is paramount, Engelbert said. Even if the league must play in empty arenas for safety’s sake, she said, she and her team are reimagining what experiencing live sports might look and feel like. It could mean playing games in one, centralized location that has been cleared for fans or playing in front of no fans in person but emphasizing other live forms of engagement, like social media.
“Getting live sports back on television, I think we have almost a public service responsibility to do everything we can,” Engelbert said. “Because it’s clear that everybody’s missing live sports.” |

The flip side of that is that the WNBA would not be just one game but a potential for 17 while the monster truck is a one time thing. Personally I think that can be worked out. Arenas are not used every night. Maybe the stuff a bunch of events back to back, daily because people will be ready to get out of their houses (if they have any money to go to events.) Relocation is definitely a potential.

Seattle, Phoenix & Indiana are already playing in a different venue due to renovations. Atlanta & Washington probably have nothing to worry about. The biggest threats are the Liberty, Sparks & Lynx who could get bounced a few times this summer if the NBA(& NHL) go up again and concerts fight for arena availability. Hopefully Joe Tsai knows better than to put the Liberty back at WCC for even just a few games.

They can all play in Gateway arena. Lack of seats is no problem with no fans. Teams fly in, an can get to Gateway in minutes, leave the same day, or stay in one of the hotels on site. West teams might come a day ahead to get used to the time change.

Kirk Herbstreit, a college football journalist, said he just can't see football being played this year, and I tend to agree. From what we know -- and it all could change -- it would seem like public gatherings could be permitted again in the late fall.
The logic behind that is that apparently there will be several surges of infections, each one less of a problem than the last, and though those surges will continue until there's a vaccine and/or herd immunity, it seems each one will last six weeks or so in a given area.
The issue, again perhaps (because no one really knows), is that different areas of the country are surging at different times, and by the time New York has worked its way through three surges, say, other areas of the country will still be on surge two.
One other possibility: The hot weather will indeed knock back the virus, meaning that it will rebound in the fall.
Of course, getting about 300 million vaccines out to the American people solves the problem, but even after one is developed, the logistics of employing it are fairly daunting.

As that article mentions, if there aren't going to be any fans in attendance, you can literally play the games anywhere and there'd be little point in moving around. Do a deal with a decent-sized hotel and put the entire league - players, coaches, officials and all - in one place. If you set it up with somewhere like one of the casinos in Vegas or the Mohegan, you'd even have the arena in the same building. Although you wouldn't even need a proper arena, given there'd be nobody in the seats. A court with enough room for cameras and you're set. |

Sure, make a 13th "travel team". Why not. Maybe there are a few choices as to not keep the teams in one arena for the entire season. Mohegan Sun seems 100% sure choice. College Park in Dallas could be another(small and can curtain off the upper bowl). The obvious pick is Vegas, but if the NBA is locking that one in, I doubt they can have half the NBA playoffs there plus a 1/4 of the WNBA season there, too. The arena in Everett is an option as well. Don't want to play in these gigantic arenas with no fans. Whatever gets us a season, even abbreviated, would satisfy me.

Article about the NBA looking at how to finish its season. Talks about the idea of putting all the teams in one place. No mention of the WNBA but seems like a possibility for it as well.
https://www.aol.com/article/news/2020/03/31/coronavirus-nba-reportedly-considering-playing-out-season-at-single-site-without-fans/23966321/

In that plan, players and key staff would be quarantined in separate hotels while waiting for their matches. Of course, such plan carries several drawbacks.
For starters, such a system would isolate players from their families. A single positive coronavirus test could also cause the whole system to collapse. And then there are the ethical questions of what happens when a player suffers a run-of-the-mill injury. Hospitals remain slammed by the coronavirus and could still be in a bad state by the time the NBA returns.
But that’s where the sports world finds itself in the coronavirus pandemic. Teams want to start playing again. Fans want to watch them. Employees want financial security. At the end of the day, finding a way to play games that minimize risk for players and eliminate risk for spectators — by barring them from games — might be the least-bad option left. |

I threw out Mohegan Sun because of their ability to house everyone, but would the Mystics' arena be any better. Is there plenty of lodging near by to house all twelve teams, plus media and refs?

It seems to me the lodging has to be strictly controlled as well. I think all the teams need to stay in one hotel if possible. That hotel has to be able to assure that every staff member is virus free. They would likely all need to eat at the same place as well. If everybody is going out on the town and the virus is still around someone comes down with it, and the whole thing might collapse as the article says.
The 15 minute testing method just approved by the FDA could help, but those can only do 4 an hour, so that's an issue. Perhaps that will be improved upon.
If they go forth with this - they will be playing from quarantine.

You'd have to test everyone in the arena -- from janitors to executives -- the day of the event. If you don't, and one person later tests positive, both teams and everyone involved goes into quarantine.
Logistically, it's a nightmare, really, because if one group is quarantined, no games involving anyone in that group can be played for two weeks. At least.
