"We have not taken any scenario off the table," Engelbert said. "We've got our regular tip still on the table, we've got 15-, 30-, 60-, 90-day etc. (delay) scenarios on the table. It's our job to think through the scenarios, put down all the pros and cons, and continue the momentum around the WNBA during a time of crisis in the world.

They’re even considering a 90 day delay instead of cancelling the season. That means Fall Ball. I like it! The WNBA is no longer pandering to international ball. That’s the way it should be.

I have to believe that any scenario that goes beyond a July 1 starting date would have to feature a shortened season. The sports calendar gets pretty crowded in October.

Who cares if it’s crowded? One of the digs I’ve heard about the WNBA is nobody wants to watch basketball in the summer. Like I pointed out before, Adam Silver was curious if playing during the winter would make more people notice the WNBA. What better season than this one to test that theory out?

Megdal is suggesting in his latest mock that he expects Rutgers' Arella Guirantes to declare for the draft. Where would she go, late first round?

Lauren Cox reacts to WNBA holding a virtual draft on April 17 and possibility of season starting late because of coronavirus

The Dallas Wings could select the former Flower Mound and Baylor star with the No. 2 pick.

Flower Mound is only about 30 mi from Arlington.

Quote:
“I’m just excited that it’s still going to happen,” Cox said in a phone interview. “At least it gives us something, because we had no idea what was going to happen.

Everybody was in the dark, except maybe Walker.

Quote:
“It would be nice to stay close [to home],” Cox said. “My family would be able to get to see most of my games at home, but at the same time, I’m going to be thankful for wherever I get drafted.”

Bibb, use your head. This player actually wants to be there, the biggest “intangible” of all.

Quote:
Engelbert isn’t sure where she’ll be announcing the picks from; it could be her house, the league offices or another location.

It doesn’t really matter.

Quote:
Engelbert told The Associated Press that the league has discussed a variety of scenarios that are contingent on the COVID-19 outbreak, and said the WNBA could begin its season before the NBA or other sports leagues resume because there are only 12 teams and 144 players. Two WNBA cities are major hot spots for the virus: New York and Seattle. The Las Vegas casino where the Aces play is shut down, as is the Connecticut Sun’s home arena.

Let’s do it... with or without fans.

Quote:
While America is under quarantine, Cox has been working out at home with younger sisters Whitney and Maddie, who play basketball at Lubbock Christian and Flower Mound High School, respectively.

She’s not bad. I might not be angry if Reeve took her at #16, but it depends on who else might be available and who was taken at #6.

Bellport's Arella Guirantes wants to show she can compete at WNBA level

Article from 3/2020:

Quote:
The Bellport native wants to ride that Rutgers pipeline into the WNBA. The Scarlet Knights have sent 24 players to the women’s professional league, including some incredible big-time guards. Guirantes wants to join the ranks of Cappie Pondexter, Epiphany Prince and Essence Carson.

Quote:
Guirantes, who could have played almost anywhere, picked Texas Tech and said she quickly realized she had made a mistake. She missed her family and found the transition from New York to Texas daunting.

“It definitely was a culture shock to me,” Guirantes said.

Dallas, you’re out. This girl is in a NY state of mind.

That’s huge. ESPN has much more viewership than ESPN2. ESPN is thirsting for new sports coverage.

Goodness, it's been quite a W news day. If this is true, I honestly can't see her sneaking into the first round at all. She's just another high-volume scorer on the wing that doesn't appear to do anything (else) particularly well. Unless she sees that she's a consensus 1st-round pick, this one's quite a head-scratcher.

I wonder if it helps that they scheduled the Draft on a Friday this year. Not that there's anything else going on the other six days of the week these days. Laughing Still, I agree, this is a great thing for the W, and really a no-brainer move for both the W and ESPN given the circumstances.

Might as well. Hopefully the 7pm start now means we get it for 2 hours of coverage.

Guirantes was not bad in the times i saw her play for Rutgers. She looked like a WNBA player to me just needs more patience and knowledge of how to be a team player.

Then again, how much can you say about players who have little chance of making an impact? Of course, why not, but a long discussion on the merits of pick 15 wouldn't seem that fascinating.

How is that any different than listening to the NBA/NFL people talk about late round picks that no one cares about or never hear about again?

What's the most amount of early entries for a draft? If Guirantes & Dana Evans enter that has to be a record with 4. Aari McDonald is also strongly considered and as is Chennedy Carter who's been in everyone's mocks currently. We could have six early entries this year. All could go in the first round.

Speaks volumes to the CBA agreement i believe. Alhtough its still not alot , i guess its enough for these girls to want. More power to them .

Walker
Sabally
Carter (Possibly)
Dana Evans (Possibly)
Guirantes (Possibly)
McDonald (Possibly

Odyssey Sims said the same thing, and look how that turned out! The whole "local" thing is overblown with Cox, if I'm Bibb, I'm drafting the best player available who will have the most impact on this team both now and in the future, not to mention, one whose been praised by multiple super stars throughout the league as being the next "it" factor coming into the draft and her name is Satou!!!

Even when you try and find highlights of Cox, I see very little in reference to her alone vs Baylor as a team, but there are several on Satou specifically, so what does that tell you? Cox is a good basketball player, but I want someone with star potential on my team, Satou showed her potential when she dominated against the best stars the WNBA has to offer when Team USA played against Oregon, all anyone has to do is watch the tape and you tell me whose the better choice between her vs Cox!!!

Texas Tech is almost 5 1/2 hrs drive from Dallas, so her comments has absolutely nothing to do with this region...besides, who cares because I have no idea who she is anyway! Good luck in NY.

Draft date: April 17th, 2020 @ 7:00 PM, in Cathy Engelbert's house

Idk why I find this so damn funny, but the League still doesn't know yet where the Draft will be cast from, so why did the person/people editing Draftsite feel the need to say it'll be in her house like that?? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Not sure if this was floated already....Would y’all do 3 for 5+7?

Dallas takes Sabally and Cox at 2 and 3, Dangerfield at 9.
Indiana is happy with Walker and Hebard at 5 and 7 (assuming Carter declares).

I think Dallas quickly accepts....but Indy fans, would you? What would it take from the Wings to get the pick? Or no deal is worth it and you keep #3?

Wings
Jefferson 5’6/Dangerfield 5’5
Ogunbowale 5’8/Gray 6’0/Davis 6’2
Sabally 6’4/Thornton 6’1/Samuelson 6’3
Cox 6’4/Harrison 6’3
Ndour 6’5/McGee-Stafford 6’7
Dallas gets the hometown girl, and their two starting forwards of the future.

Fever
Wheeler 5’7/Allemand 5’8
Mitchell 5’8/Mitchell 5’9
Vivians 6’1/Walker 6’1/Laney 6’0
Dupree 6’2/Achonwa 6’3
McCowan 6’7/Hebard 6’4/Hatar 6’10
Indiana was 11th in 3PM and 11th in defensive rating. Walker gives them another shooter (Vivians helps too), Hebard helps defensively (big body, great rebounder, can get some blocks and steals).
As a backup this season, Hebard can try to expand her range and perhaps start for Dupree next year. If Wheeler doesn’t return next year, Mitchell slides to point and Vivians can play SG with Walker at SF, or T Mitchell starts and Megan gets another year to develop as a backup.

I see where you are going with this, but under no circumstances whatsoever should Kaela Davis spend another 15 seconds in a Wings uniform and I'm borderline feeling the same way about Imani also!!!

Indy doesn’t need more players, they need better players.
What you quietly don’t mention is that you have Indy cutting Kennedy Burke in order to add Walker, who you don’t even have starting. Is it worth it? Let me work it. I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it.

I picture Sabally starting for Indy.

If Indy cuts Burke, then DAL can again realize the error of their ways last season and pick her back up. So in effect it would be Sabally + Burke for Hebard + Walker, under your scenario. Catchings is probably smarter than that. They do all this to pick up two bench players (according to you), and they don’t even lose their training camp contract signee in Hatar. This trade doesn’t make Indy better, while DAL would be throwing a parade even under lockdown orders for Bibb.

Seems suboptimal for Indiana, unless Carter comes out and they have a lot doubts about Cox. I certainly wouldn't make that deal until Dallas makes its pick. If the Wings go for Cox no reason to give up Sabally.

Atlanta might 4 = 5+9 was ok. Dream could get Carter or Walken plus maybe Harris or Mompremier.

Absolutely not. I would hope Catchings would laugh Dallas off the phone if they made that offer.

Good point -- but that's why I can't force myself to watch the NBA draft even though I'm a big fan. So you're right; why not two hours?

2020 Mock Draft: Big Board 5.0

1. NYL - Sabrina Ionescu
2. DAL - Satou Sabally
Quote:
Cox may well end up on the Wings anyway, who own most of the first round’s selections

If that’s the case, might as well pick her #2.

3. IND - Lauren Cox
Quote:
This is a playoff team with Lauren Cox, period.

He’s much more glowing about Cox in the summaries than he is about Sabally, and yet he puts her third.

4. ATL - Chennedy Carter
Quote:
Carter is a rookie, and that typically comes with some shyness/reticence… but that’s just not in her makeup, and never has been.

Okay, that’s just too much of a coincidence. Megdal is definitely lurking the board.

5. DAL - Megan Walker
6. MIN - Bella Alarie
Quote:
[Reeve] could engage Greg Bibb and find a deal that, for instance, trades the sixth pick for seven and nine.

I’m not sure what’s going on here, but I’m not angry at the Alarie pick or idea of trading #6 for #7+#9. Not sure it would be worth it to DAL considering what they gave up to get these picks. They should be able to work out a better deal than that. Also, wouldn’t mind Hebard at this pick.

7. DAL - Tyasha Harris
Quote:
But she’ll be the second point guard picked after Carter

Either poor grammar or can’t count.

8. CHI - Beatrice Mompremier
9. DAL - Ruthy Hebard
I can’t see her falling this far.

10. PHX - Arella Guirantes
His biggest reach so far. Not only hasn’t she declared, I have a tough time seeing her as a first round pick with the talent that’s left on the the board. PHX lost a mighty mite in Mitchell. I think they draft one back in Dangerfield. She also adds to the UConn flavor of this team.

11. SEA - Crystal Dangerfield
12. WAS - Aari McDonald
This is Megdal’s third non-declarer in the first round. Taking a lot of chances here. I agree that Thibault will probably go PG, but I think the safer bet will be Cooper, the way he has this draft progressing.

13. NYL - Juicy Landrum
Too high. Third rounder.

14. IND - Te’a Cooper
I think they might need a SG over a PG.

15. DAL - Mikiah Herbert Harrigan
I see her as an SF at the next level.

16. MIN- Stella Johnson
Would rather have a PG, or maybe even another big like Brewer, with Fagbenle still not signed. Don’t know a lot about Johnson. She takes a lot of shots and has a humongous number of TO’s at the mid-major level. If it’s a guard down here, in this scenario I’d rather go with what I know, and that’s Kaila Charles. Reeve has watched her plenty in the past 4 years.

17. ATL - Mikayla Pivec

I think people are sleeping on Mikayla Pivec

That must explain why he has her this low. I believe in his first version mock he had her way up at #6. I wasn’t too happy about that.

18. PHX - Kaila Charles
Should go higher.

19. SEA - Joyner Holmes

20. LAS - Kitija Laksa
Might even go a little lower with this one.

21. DAL - Minyon Moore

22. LAS - Tynice Martin

23. CON - Becca Hittner

24. WAS - Kiah Gillespie
Should go higher.

25. ATL - Brittany Brewer
Second rounder. Wouldn’t be mad at #16.

26. NYL - Shadeen Samuels

27. ATL - Jaylyn Agnew

28. IND - Blair Watson

29. PHX - Nicki Ekhomu

30. CHI - Boriana Hristova

31. SEA - Aislinn Konig

32. Chicago Abi Scheid

33. LVA - Kylee Shook

34. LAS - Erica Ogwumike

35. CON - Davion Wingate

36. WAS - Chante Stonewall

His usual lazy effort at the third round. He never has any international picks listed, even though international picks always show up in the third round. Deferred picks tend to be less wasteful than obvious cuts.

He completely overlooked Stephanie Jones out of Maryland. She came on strong toward the end of the season. Was starting and helping Maryland win games. I’d rate her as a second round pick.

They do all this to pick up two bench players (according to you), and they don’t even lose their training camp contract signee in Hatar. This trade doesn’t make Indy better, while DAL would be throwing a parade even under lockdown orders for Bibb.

I like Burke, and can see them cutting Allemand and using KMitchell as 2nd point guard (still starting as SG). But I think they like Laney and don’t cut her.

I see Dallas picking Satou at 2.

I agree Indiana needs better players. Sure I have Walker and Hebard as bench players this season, but Cox would be too. So they trade a bench player for two....but in future seasons I can see all three being starters.
As I said, I see Walker as a future starter and Hebard as a potential starter alongside McCowan (for sure if she can prove a mid range touch during games).

KMitchell, Vivians, Walker, Hebard, McCowan...TMitchell, Achonwa
Vs
KMitchell, TMitchell, Vivians, Cox, McCowan...Achonwa
Assuming Wheeler walks in FA.

My tiers:
1st: Ionescu
2nd: Sabally, Cox, Carter, Walker
3rd: Harris, Hebard, Mompremier, Dangerfield
4th: Cooper, Alarie

I think Walker can be an All-Star, just like I think Cox can be. Neither will be this season.
So for me in this scenario, Indiana is getting better players in addition to more players.

I can see Dallas going for that too, I am just trying to gauge what ppl think the trade value would be for the 3rd pick. Especially for the Wings to try to land Lauren the hometown girl.

Absolutely not. I would hope Catchings would laugh Dallas off the phone if they made that offer.

I respect it, people don’t like Walker as much as I do. She struggled against the top teams, but I think she can flourish alongside KMitchell and McCowan as well as a healthy Vivians.
What would be an un-laughable trade request from Dallas for #3?
#5+Gray? #5+Harrison?

Honestly, only Indiana trading up to get #2 (#3 + Something for #2). If Dallas doesn't really care who they get between Cox & Sabally but Indiana does care, then maybe it happens. Though at some point the League or somebody's gotta put a limit on how many raw assets Dallas can have at any one time. Laughing
