Duke lost a trailblazer and pioneer Feb. 24 in the form of Ida Stephens Owens, the first black woman to earn her Ph.D. at Duke. A graduate student just a year after Duke had been integrated, Owens went on after earning her Ph.D. to receive the NIH Director’s Award in 1992and the first Distinguished Alumni Award from the Graduate School in 2013 for her positive impact on the University.
