Cockfighting is a blood sport in which two roosters specifically bred for fighting aggression -- called gamecocks -- are placed beak to beak in a small ring and encouraged to fight to the death.
Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states and is a felony offense in 42 states and the District of Columbia. The possession of birds for fighting purposes is prohibited in 39 states and the District of Columbia, and being a spectator at a cockfighting event is illegal in 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Why should nicknames honoring Indian valor, such as "Fighting Sioux", be condemned as inappropriate, while a nickname praising a universally illegal blood sport, such as "Gamecocks", gets a pass? |

| All you need is a few people to claim that that nickname is hostile and abusive to roosters to get the ball rolling.

Maybe we can get all the nicknames of animals used in other regrettable activities banned as well, like huskies, falcons, greyhounds, foxes, etc. Or all aggressive animals, including wolverines, panthers, and lions. And don't forget bloodthirsty humans...no more Spartans, Vikings, or Warriors.
Or we can just remember that Rutgers changed its nickname from the Chanticleers, another synonym for fighting rooster, to the Scarlet Knights, because the former was felt to conjure up the image of a bunch of chickens.

Look at the school's logo. Is that a bird or a plane or a man?
Looks like they will have to change the nickname to TomSumters to be politically correct. Dude lived to the ripe old age of 97 -- quite an accomplishment back in those days.

| We tried to check with the gamecock's themselves but they didn't seem to have a response unlike the native Americans who actually did....that was really a stretch on that one Mr. MacGrady....hope you have a more productive day today.

 That's all too *cute*.
Being a bird lover, I've never found SC's logo/mascot offensive. I get how some might. I actually HAVE Gamecocks. Keeping poultry is a hobby of mine. Mine are specifically known as Old English Game Birds which, much like Pit Bulls, were humanly refined to be pugilists. However, not all Pit Bulls, and few OEGBs are utilized for fighting anymore. They're just tiny little birds with feisty attitudes. Their purported *history* shouldn't be held against them.
That said, the wiki article really doesn't make a good case to refute Glenn. 
Connotations are such a delicate, time-sensitive thing. Why not complain about "Devils" (Duke, AZ-St, etc.)? Bears 'n Hawks are predators, natural killers.....  Nah. I live in a land where a lying, cheating criminal is revered by many as The Leader of The Greatest Democracy. I've got better things to fret about.
