In 1880 he served as Vice President of the city council; he concurrently filled a vacant position on the board of education from 1884-1893. He also held the positions of trustee of the Institute for the Blind, trustee of the now Ohio University, was on the Board of Directors of the Ohio State Forestry Bureau, president of the Columbus Centennial Freedom Jubilee, and a trustee for Wilberforce University.
Poindexter was also the first African-American foreman on an Ohio grand jury. He wrote for several publications and worked in conjunction with President Rutherford B. Hayes, President William McKinley, and Ohio governor William Dennison Jr.
Additional highlights in Poindexter’s life was his honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree bestowed by State University, Louisville, Kentucky and was instrumental in Frederick Rick Douglass’s visit to Columbus where he spoke at the Free Soil Party Convention. |

Cecil “F*ck Yo Fountain” Williams is Black History
“Fuck Yo Fountain” Williams went on to photograph significant desegregation efforts in South Carolina . Some of his most notable pictures are from the Briggs v. Elliott case in Summerton, South Carolina. It was the first of five desegregation cases that eventually pushed to integrate public schools in the United States, as all five cases would later on be combined into Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court case that declared “separate but equal” public schools for whites and blacks was unconstitutional.

Michelle Obama will have a Northern California elementary school named after her
Quote: |
In a unanimous vote, the West Contra Costa Unified School District Board decided to change the name of Wilson Elementary School to Michelle Obama Elementary School.
The idea was first proposed when the PTA sent a letter to the school board, the school board said. Two ad hoc meetings received unanimous support from parents, students and community leaders.
"We wanted to choose someone on a global level," Wilson PTA President Maisha Cole said. "With a new school and new learning environment, we want our children to think beyond Richmond, to think beyond California, and remind them that they can make a difference locally and globally."
The new name will have a new school to match. The elementary school will be rebuilt for the 2020-2021 school year, the school said.
"We have the opportunity to have a beautiful new school named after a person who really represents our diversity and values," Principal Claudia Velez said. "Our school is diverse, modern and innovative, and the things that the kids will be doing will prepare them for a very strong and successful future in whatever career they choose." |

Legendary Children Essential Viewing: Paris is Burning
Quote: |
Paris is Burning loomed large in our research for this book, not just because it’s ground zero of black queer culture in the 20th century, but because it has clear and obvious influences on Drag Race itself – many of which the show and Ru have been quite open about. “In the grand tradition of Paris is Burning” is how Ru has traditionally introduced the Library mini-challenge – and with good reason, because the very concepts of reading and shade were introduced to the world through the film, as explained so effectively by one of its most famous subjects, the legendary Dorian Corey. |

Barbara Jordan's famous and commonsense speech recommending strong border security, deporting and providing no benefits to illegal immigrants, as chair of the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform from 1994-1996.

“Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” Starring Octavia Spencer
Academy Award® winner Octavia Spencer stars as Madam C.J. Walker, the trailblazing African American haircare entrepreneur who was America’s first female self-made millionaire.
Inspired by the book, On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker, written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, the Netflix four-part limited series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker brings the uplifting story of this cultural icon to the screen for the first time.
Against all odds, Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized black haircare, as she simultaneously fought for social change.

Unfortunately her death enabled the Clinton administration and the elites to easily disregard her recommendations.

Crystal LaBeija: Queen of Shade, Mother of the Ball
The ballroom scene as we know it today coalesced around Crystal’s actions and anger and is now a worldwide scene with its own forms of art and expression, centering the voices, movements and experiences of people of color worldwide. Crystal’s choice to form her own house and throw her own ball casts her earlier reading session into context. She wasn’t just mad in that moment; she was clearly mad and fed up about being marginalized for years and years, until she finally said “To hell with it, I’ll throw my own goddamn ball.” That’s often how revolution works. People don’t necessarily write manifestos to affect change; they simply get pissed off enough to do something about it.

Marsha P. Johnson
Legend has it that she was sitting in the Stonewall Inn on that legendary night of June 28, 1969, celebrating her birthday, when the cops came in to harass the queer folks (as cops liked to do). Further legend has it that she helped kick off the rioting by picking up a shot glass and throwing it at the bar mirror while screaming “I WANT MY CIVIL RIGHTS!” It has been called “the shotglass heard round the world.”
