If China win the early game - and hopefully there's enough rivalry between China and Korea that they'll care even though they're through - then Spain can lose by up to 70 points in their final game and still go to Tokyo. Fagbenle and Samuelson are playing at Avenida at the minute, with Gil and Dominguez, so hopefully they're all great friends. I'm more than happy for the fix to be in for that final game. If we win 1-0, that'll do nicely Smile.

Based on who's winless, Great Britain does stand the best chance to qualify.

Group A: Sweden(0-2) plays Belgium and though there's a slim chance of a win for Sweden, Belgium has looked like the better team in this group. Belgium & Canada qualify.

Group B: Brazil(0-2) plays Australia and it's doubtful they win. Australia, France & Puerto Rico qualify.

Group C: Mozambique(0-2) plays Serbia and unless Serbia doesn't show up, there's no way they win. Serbia & Nigeria qualify.

Group D: Great Britain(0-2) plays Spain. See Richyyy's post. China, Spain & possibly Great Britain qualify.

FIBA clearly have someone new working for them, because both Saturday and Sunday they've posted simple, clear, and correct assessments of the group situations on their site. The one for Sunday is here: http://www.fiba.basketball/olympics/women/2020/news/permutations-who-will-claim-the-last-olympic-tickets-to-tokyo

(although a bit rude that they include the possibility that Brazil could beat Australia by 50+, but not the possibility that GB could beat Spain by 70+ Wink )

I was impressed with Jazmon Gwathmey's shooting against the Opals. She was dropping them from everywhere to end up with 30 points on 10/18 shooting, incl. 4/6 outside the arc.
Certain Wings fans (and plenty of non-Wings fans too) would also have enjoyed the way the French crowd were jeering L** C***age every time she got ... let's call it "animated" ... at the refs.

Spain coming out 100% vs. GB. Not good for Great Britain.

Spain 40 - Great Britain 30 at the half. GB just doesn't have the depth to compete with Spain. Fagbenle looks gassed. GB basically got nothing from their bench and I'm surprised not to see Anigwe out there considering how tired Temi looks.

Meanwhile in France, Brazil are giving the Opals a real contest so far.
4 point game, halfway through the 3rd.
---
Opals lead by just 1 with a quarter to play. Dantas doing most of the damage in the 3rd quarter.

Australia with a 1 point lead at the end of the 3rd, 61-60. Tight game.

Meanwhile in Belgium, Sweden tied Belgium, 14-14, at the end of the 1st Q.

Opals survive a genuine scare and book their tickets to Tokyo 72-86,
and in doing so, lock in Puerto Rico's tickets too.

Solid game. If only Brazil played like this vs. Puerto Rico. Congrats to Australia & also Puerto Rico.

In Belgrade, Great Britain fought a hard match but fell to Spain 79-69 ending their Olympic hopes. South Korea & Spain have now also qualified.

In essentially the last meaningful game, Belgium leads Sweden 42-33 after 3Q. Sweden's offense is stagnant with the team shooting just 26%.

Sweden falls to Belgium, 61-53. Poor offensive effort by Sweden. Belgium headed to the Olympics.

Now unless Mozambique shocks the basketball world and defeats Serbia, the 12 qualified teams going to the 2020 Olympics are:

Japan(hosts)
USA
Belgium*
Canada
Australia
France
Puerto Rico*
Nigeria
Serbia
China
South Korea
Spain

*Olympic debuts

Mozambique took the lead after the first Q, 21-16. But a poor 2nd Q has them behind. Just looks like Serbia is easily walking through this game without much effort. Serbia currently leads 41-28 in the 3rd Q.

Recap of all the games, meaningful or not:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2020/02/olympic-qualifying-tournaments-day-3-february-9th/

The few minutes that Anigwe played of course prevented her from instead deciding to represent Nigeria. It would be cool if there was an exhibition game between people who chose to play for them and those who did not.

I figured she might have Nigerian links as well, both from the name and because she was cheering them on in the USA game that just ended. I can only assume she wasn't fully fit, because otherwise her limited action in this tournament was strange. From our perspective, being mercenary about it, locking her in as British with those few minutes could be useful for the future even if she was no real help this week.
