Add SMU to the list of schools looking for a new coach.

Random question...This story as well as another recent one have complaints that "the school" didn't pay for medical care. Can/do schools actually make that promise to recruits? I'd think that they provided players with a commercial health insurance policy, whose coverage and exclusions probably aren’t understood by families. I can't believe schools self-insure for students' medical care.

If I were a parent and my daughter played for this team and they were NOT looking for a new coach, I think I'd be insisting she put her name in the transfer portal......YESTERDAY.

As for medical, that's an interesting question. I know for me when I got injured, I assumed it would be taken care of, and it was. I really knew nothing about how it was being paid for. I suspect most kids that age assume too.

How many players will be leaving this culture behind? And why would any stay for further abuse?

SMU's message to players: Keep your mouth shut because nothing will be done anyways.

agree. And they would even have IMO a good case to not have to sit out a year.

which also goes along with what the first player said - which was that he had favorites, and also cared more about his recruits than those he inherited. Yes, there is always multiple sides to anything like this. But multiple players/ex-players confirmed that he made the comment about killing themselves if they didn't want to get better. That alone to me is a firing offense.

The athletic director at SMU is Ryan Hart. His father, Dave, is well known to Tennessee fans as he was the athletic director in Knoxville that facilitated getting rid of the lady vols moniker as well as negotiating Pat Summitt's exit from the program Is she became more and more ill with early onset Alzheimer's

Hmmm. I guess he must be as heartless as his old man....and care just about as much about WBB.

Poetry oft soothes the fevered brow.
When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
-- Coach Rudyard Kipling, who was not fired, though he offered literal advice and not, like some later coaches, mere rhetorical hyperbole |

His "literal advice" was steeped in irony, if you give the entire poem a good read ("The Young British Solider", from Kipling's Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses).
He writes from the POV of a grizzled old vet serving in the British Infantry during the Afganistan Wars giving advice to the new recuits.
And it is basically just a horror show of what war looks like for someone on the lines, ultimately culminating in the line about blowing one's brains out like a "good solider".
Kipling sympathized with the plight of the common solider fighting Her Majesty's wars. His message was pretty much the polar opposite of the idea of players "killing themselves" if they couldn't compete (not to mention the odd idea that we should compare a basketball game to the horrors seen on a battlefield when discussing what sort of "rhetorical hyperbole" is acceptable and what's so far beyond the pale that any reasonable educator should immediately cringe at hearing it spoken).
