I grieve Kobe Bryant as a rape survivor, but also as a parent, a partner, and a basketball player

https://hellogiggles.com/celebrity/i-grieve-kobe-bryant-as-a-rape-survivor-but-also-as-a-parent-a-partner-and-a-basketball-player/

Quote:
Mentioning Bryant’s rape allegations now is met with fury and vitriol, but those are just some of the many responses people have to a life as incredible as it was imperfect. Yet we, as a collective, often consider sexual assault survivors to be one-dimensional human beings, our lives completely defined by the trauma we’ve endured. And so, it’s assumed that there’s only one way those like myself can feel about Bryant.

Other people show them going higher (one site claims he told air control he was going up to try and get above the clouds) but then falling (2,000 feet per minute or > 4,000 feet per minute depending who is reporting) and hitting the ground. Pilots say it is very difficult to go from visual flying to suddenly have to go to instruments when you hit a cloud and that a pilot's instincts can go against what they see their gauges telling them they need to do.

FlightAware shows them never going over 2,000 feet and 160 mph and below the moment prior to impact (I've seen reports of 184 mph at impact).

LeBron James and Anthony Davis honored Kobe Bryant with new tattoos

Quote:
On Wednesday, LeBron and Davis took another step to honor Kobe's memory with both of them getting Bryant tattoos on their legs by the same artist, Vanessa Aurelia.

LeBron shared the commemorative tattoo on his Instagram Story, which appeared to be of a snake - for the Black Mamba - with the No. 24.

The unpleasant, complicated side of Kobe Bryant’s legacy has to be addressed too

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/celtics/2020/01/29/the-unpleasant-side-kobe-bryant-legacy-has-addressed-too/tkXnrhjV5qFSD81TvJMvpO/story.html

postponing something difficult does not mean eliminating it, and as the stages of grief pass to varying degrees relative to how we knew Bryant, there has to be room for anger, for addressing the complicated legacy of a man who seemingly evolved into a champion of women’s sports but remains a trigger for sexual assault survivors across the spectrum. It is a topic we cannot, and should not, be afraid to bring up.

“There is only one way you can be in the clouds, on an I.F.R. flight plan or by accident,” said Mr. Deetz, referring to flight plans filed under what are known as instrument flight rules.

None of the local charter companies maintain certification that allows them to fly using instruments, said Claudia Lowry, who owns Group 3 Aviation, a charter service and flight school based at the same airport in Van Nuys as Island Express. I.F.R. certification would mean drastically increased training, equipment and insurance requirements. Even local police helicopters do not maintain it, she said.

Quote:
“This is a big, fast aircraft, almost like a jet,” he said in an interview. “If you get into poor conditions, the workload for one pilot can be too high.”

Under good conditions, he said, flying with one pilot is straightforward. But if a flight becomes complex because of shifting cloud layers and patchy communication with air traffic control, he said, as may have been the case on the flight carrying Mr. Bryant and the others, small mistakes can compound into catastrophe.

“With another pilot there, you have help. That’s what this helicopter was designed for,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve flown as the second pilot and had to help correct something.”

Someone downloaded the flight radar data from Flight Radar 24 and plugged it into Google Earth Studio and made a video simulating the flight. The pilot does appear to be going up at the end in agreement with the report that he radioed he was going up to get above the clouds and also flightaware.com. But then the helicopter turns (maybe purposely going to go back) and drops.

I heard a professional helicopter pilot say that you must have 1/2 mile visibility to remain in special VFR in the daytime. The pilot was flying around 150 mph the whole time, except for the holding period. That is 2.5 miles per minute. Or a 1/2 mile every 12 seconds. I would like to hear a helicopter pilot comment on that speed under special VFR through hills and rising terrain and no weather reporting (cloud cover height).

The NBA will honor Kobe and Gianna Bryant at next month's All-Star Game by having the players don their jersey numbers.

The NBA announced Friday all players on Team LeBron—captained by LeBron James—will wear Gianna's No. 2 and all players on Team Giannis—captained by Giannis Antetokounmpo—will wear Kobe's No. 24.

I’ve always heard that in any kind of significant accident more than one thing usually goes wrong. Two here are fairly well established.

At some point very early Sunday morning the pilot decided that either it was going to clear up or that they would be okay regardless. That was a fatal error of judgment. It’s now hard to believe he would have taken that chance knowing he had to go over that highest rim of of the Santa Monica mountains. Which he never made it to, by the way, and I’ll get to that in a minute.

I’m reading the conversation here and all this talk about instruments and certifications etc.

This helicopter and this pilot weren’t medical rescue going up to a base camp on Mt Everest to rescue a sick climber in unpredictable weather and 23K feet in the sky. This is LA. The skies are blue and the sun is bright almost every day. I mean seriously. And all they were doing were taking some kids to a basketball game? Wow. But, you have to factor that in that the helicopter was not equipped for flying instruments only, nor was it certified to, nor was the pilot certified to.

But none of that explains the sudden sharp rapid descent which we see on this simulation. I heard something about mechanical error earlier today and I’m kind of thinking something went wrong mechanically. There’s no way this pilot in that situation is going to be flying fast at all. He can go 5 MPH if he wants to. It’s not an airplane. He couldn’t see. No way that thing turns downward and increases in speed to near 160 MPH by the actions of the pilot.

And so they crashed into what is a foothill to the much higher mountains you can see in the distance. If the pilot, who had flown this exact route in clear weather very recently, thought he should take a helicopter full of families with children over THOSE mountains, in fog, to get them to a damn basketball game, he was not a responsible person. And I’m being kind. That was lunacy.
