Eyewitness says Kobe Bryant’s pilot was circling ‘aggressively’ before crash; Aviation expert: ‘This was totally irresponsible’

Quote:
An eyewitness says Kobe Bryant's pilot, Ara Zobayan, 50, was flying in a circle "aggressively," about 30 minutes before the helicopter crashed into a mountain above Calabasas, California.

They had to fly in a circle holding pattern while planes landed or took off from the Burbank airport. That is probably what is being referred to, and that didn't happen near the crash.

Quote:
Aviation experts who studied the helicopter's bizarre flight path and weather maps observed that the pilot flew away from the airport and he had enough visibility to see the hills before he flew into them.

Quote:
The helicopter was flying at 184mph and descending at a rate of 4,000 feet per minute when it struck the hillside, according to Flightradar24.

This "earwitness" contradicts at least part of that. He says that the helicopter was low overhead, but that he still couldn't see it due to the low clouds that it was in. And he says that it was moving slowly - 5 mph at that point. You can see the hills behind him where it crashed.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/28QYy8lrww8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

However, I have previously seen articles that talk about it descending at a rate of 2,000 feet per minute before the crash.

This eyewitness (says he could barely see the helicopter in the low clouds) was standing near the earwitness and also says the helicopter was low and flying slowly.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oRAPZhqXvqY" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Quote:
Robert Ditchey, a veteran pilot, aeronautical engineer and former airline executive, told USA Today that the crash was "totally avoidable".

"And on the part of some people I can go as far as to say irresponsible," Ditchey said.

It does seem avoidable. You can listen to the pilot talking to 3 different air controllers and he is requesting to fly "special VFR (Visual Flight Rules)" (this is allegedly after the Burbank airport was reporting IFR conditions) which means he wants permission to fly visually (as opposed to flying IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) - via cockpit instruments which also requires time to set up coordination with the air controllers) in conditions that don't have the normal 3 mile visibility. While he got permission to fly visually in reduced visibility, one air controller reminds him that he must stay out of any clouds. And he went into a cloud.

There's no middle ground when it comes to Bryant's legacy. It's either hagiography, like almost everything posted here, or people jumping up and down on his grave screaming "Colorado!"

The amount of love his legacy is receiving around the 🌎 is overwhelming in comparison to the demographic that believes what none of us knows.

People will always believe what they want for whatever reason but life goes on until it doesn't.

I disagree. There is grief. There is compassion. There is understanding that a city has had its heart ripped out, the vast majority of those fans here being the hardest working working class in this country. A sport we all love has been devastated.

I won’t speak ill of Kobe Bryant ever again. I had issues with his style of basketball, for God’s sake. There is understanding that for people around the world Kobe was a beloved figure. Maybe it was because of the aesthetic beauty of his game but there was a magic that Kobe represented that made him like a superhero to fans worldwide. His impact was unique.

I think where people lose their humanity at this moment is opining negatively about him. I repeat, at this moment. It’s like a really bad reading of the room or, in this case, the moment. It’s also so distasteful that as politics it’s disastrously counterproductive. Inspiring people to want to find you and harm you is a pretty good indication that you’re not changing hearts and minds on your issue.

Even the ostensible stated purpose of providing balance to victims who are triggered by seeing Kobe canonized can’t be right. What sane victim would want to be dragged into this situation with this level of raw emotion working against them. It would be setting yourself up for the most horrific abuse. Death threats, etc.

I’m not saying Kobe isn’t fair game at some point. Two weeks from now? Just let him be buried at least and then bring up what he did and point out to people who might be in a better frame of mind to listen what was so difficult hearing Kobe mourned so profoundly without a concern for the allegation or the victim, etc.

ABC News Suspends Matt Gutman for Inaccurately Reporting All Four of Kobe Bryant’s Children Were on Helicopter

Quote:
“We are in the business of holding people accountable. And I hold myself accountable for a terrible mistake, which I deeply regret,” Gutman said in a new statement Wednesday. “I want to personally apologize to the Bryant family for this wrenching loss and any additional anguish my report caused.”

The Los Angeles Times first reported Gutman’s suspension.

The people who want to make Bryant the NBA logo aren't going to be any more interested in listening to the Colorado story weeks from now. The goobers who make death threats about it certainly won't, they've been trying to silence this for 17 years.

Letting the people who make him out to be a perfect angel have the stage to themselves or waiting until his name is out of the news to start a rebuttal is worse than distasteful, it's actively harmful.

Anyone with common sense knows that he wasn't a perfect angel (no one is). He had a positive impact on millions of people and if they (especially his wife and surviving daughters) want to remember him for that, they certainly should do without rebuttal. It's like Aretha said about Whitney, "Remember the hits, not the misses."

If the alleged victim wants to remember him in a completely opposite way, that's certainly her right. No one should tell her or me, or any one else how to feel. You feel what you feel.

I don't do well with judgments because there are a lot of glass houses in this world. The difference between Kobe and I is that he was a high profile figure who didn't have the luxury (like myself) to tint his windows.

And I don’t think anyone is making him out to be a perfect angel and what is actively harmful about not opportunistically using this moment of shock and grief to remind everyone that he had a rape case in 2003 for purely political reasons?

I mean, if you want to talk about actively harmful, that would be the very definition of actively harmful.

Decency is something that has been lost. This is why. Because when people can’t gauge or understand the moment or the process, when they’re not wired for having that kind of sensitivity naturally, or can’t see the damage they might do, they create so much animosity and callousness towards their issue that the response becomes an absolute and often cruel rejection of their politics that lasts way beyond the moment.

Clippers game tonight. Will take a camera and go early and hopefully get some shots of the scene down there to post on SPM.

And then next week I’ll be courtside at Tuesday night’s Lakers game. How that might work with funerals is a terrible thought. Kobe’s funeral. I still can’t fucking believe it.

The pilot was flying at a very low altitude to escape the fog. He then ran into a patch of it and couldn’t see (see video). He tried to get air traffic control to guide him through the fog and the mountain terrain they were traveling it. They told him he was flying too low for tracking so he attempted to get higher so they could guide him. When he went higher, he crashed into the side of a mountain.

For people who are really curious to know what happens to people involved in plane/helicopter crashes google the accident pictures of singer Jenni Rivera or Mamonas Assasin. While they were not in a helicopter, those pics give you an idea what happens to people involved in aviation accidents. It isn't pretty and I really feel bad for those that have to do search and recovery missions because it is a rarity people are found "intact". Your seat on the plane and how the plane crashes determines the extent of your injuries.
