Kobe
Derek Jeter (The Player’s Tribune)

All I ever needed to know about Kobe Bryant was this: that throughout our friendship, the most meaningful conversations we had — they were always about family. Put aside one of the all-time great basketball careers for a second. Put aside his famous work ethic, the Mamba mentality, that incredible will to win. I’ll let everyone else tackle that. But when I think of Kobe, I really just end up thinking about those special few personal conversations that we were lucky enough to share together, each time one of us had a new baby daughter. I end up thinking about how, here was this guy who was beyond gifted as an athlete, who was obsessed with being a champion, who was known as an absolute assassin with a ball in his hands. And in the moments I got to spend with him? He didn’t really talk about any of that. He cared much more about being a husband to Vanessa and a dad to his girls. He loved his family — he was his family. That’s what was important.

And that’s the Kobe I’ll remember.

UConn honors Kobe Bryant's daughter Gigi: 'A Husky forever'

Quote:
"Gigi started to show a tremendous interest in the game," Auriemma told ESPN's Holly Rowe. "[Kobe] said, 'I wanna bring my daughter to a game,' and I said, as a matter of fact, we're coming out to Los Angeles and playing UCLA, and he says, 'All right, I'll be at the game,' and that's kind of how it all started.

"He came up to [UConn], and I don't know, he must have spent thousands of dollars inside the bookstore getting stuff, and he sat behind the bench, and our kids were fascinated by [his daughter].

"I can't put myself in her shoes, but it must have been an unbelievable thrill ... this little girl who's looking up to these players like they're superhuman, and then you've got my players looking to her dad like, 'Oh my god, I can't believe that we're' ... It was really interesting to see that dynamic work itself out."

Still doesn't seem real you guys. I've cried real tears. Thinking about the little girls breaks my heart. Tracy McGrady and Doc Rivers really gave me goosebumps, Gigi was really special on the court. I went to Staples Center today and everyone is just in shock, I never felt like this before. Maybe with Michael Jackson and Whitney. Just doesnt seem real. Maybe the WNBA can honor the girls somehow by drafting all 3 of them #1 in the upcoming draft. This is going to be the saddest HOF enshrinement ever! Blessings everyone 💜💛

I was thinking about something like that too. Maybe name trophy after her - say trophy or award for Rookie of the Year, or something like that.

I've taken a little time to process and analyze my emotions about this tragedy. I'll start off with this: Given that I've always thought he was guilty when it came to those assault accusations from the early 2000's, to me and others he was very imperfect as arguably the main NBA-representative supporter for the girls'/women's game (here's a twitter thread I read that helped me personally gain perspective). But I've also always cherished the positive publicity the women's game has received because he had become a leader amongst his fellow famous male players in praising it/helping it grow - no matter how uncool it was/still is to support women that play basketball; and no matter if the motive was to help distance himself from the aforementioned legal scandal, or if (likely with the help of having all-female family members) he did it out of genuine respect and appreciation - the latter reason being what I came to believe.

With all that said, the women's game imo will surely, maybe even sorely miss his support, which he could've provided for decades to come. The women's game imo will also miss the kind of player his daughter Gigi could've been, especially if she were indeed talented enough to go to UConn or another Division I school, with the potential to have a high-profile pro career of her own. Maybe that very fate will happen to one of his surviving daughters - I sure hope so. The loss of Kobe is one of the most devastating for the entire world's basketball/sports culture, let alone the US's. But what makes me the most sad and full of grief is potentially how much of a complete loss losing both Kobe and Gigi has been for women's basketball. Though we'll of course never really know...

Anyways, it sure sounds like all nine people that perished in the accident positively affected so many lives around them. I can't even begin to imagine what the siblings of Gigi's teammate that also passed are going through, since they lost their sister along with both of their parents. Just an absolutely devastating disaster. RIP.

Once I go to ESPN, I'm still in disbelief to see 1978-2020.

There is a really well written article by Sarah Spain that delves into the complex and often conflicting in the extreme emotions that Kobe sparks in many of us.

Thanks for the link. You're right, Spain really encapsulated the multifaceted nature of his overall legacy quite well.

Whenever legends with both great and terrible sides to their history die young and/or unexpectedly, it really leaves absolutely nobody with any sort of closure. The many notable parts of their life will get relitigated and scrutinized countless times in the future, without any sense of advancement to them. After whatever speculation/analysis takes place, no matter how thorough & no matter what secrets get unearthed, all we can do is wonder what their life/life in general could've been like had their one, single life not been abbreviated...

TMZ head Harvey Levin claims ‘Kobe’s people’ gave approval to publish crash story

Quote:
Harvey Levin, the founder of TMZ, on Tuesday said the outlet had the OK from “Kobe’s people” to break news of the helicopter crash that killed the NBA legend, his 13-year-old daughter and seven other people.

Law enforcement authorities had slammed the tabloid news website for publishing the story about Kobe Bryant’s death before authorities had notified family members of the victims.

But, in an interview with LA radio station KNX’s “In-Depth,” Levin defended his site, saying it dealt with the hoops star’s reps and got permission before going to press.

“We dealt with Kobe’s people… and we were told very clearly that she had been notified,” Levin said, appearing to refer to Bryant’s widow Vanessa.

WNBA plans to honor Gianna Bryant, fallen teammates at draft

https://nypost.com/2020/02/01/wnba-plans-to-honor-gianna-bryant-fallen-teammates-at-draft/

Quote:
In retirement, Bryant had become such a huge advocate for women’s hoops that when WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert began her job, she quickly heard from one former NBA player.
