Looks like a radically different Salary structure in the new agreement

The average salary is going to be higher than the current max! Shocked Where is the money coming from or have the owners been holding out all this time?

The @WNBA and the players have reached a tentative agreement on new CBA. Huge increase in salary, revenue sharing, and many other big things.

top players can make around $500,000; average salary will be around $130,000 which make it first time in six-figures

--

They are also enhancing their mental health and wellness program.

--

The new schedule will be out Thursday and they are adding a Commissioner's Cup during the season _ similar to what they do in Europe and in soccer. Details on that coming soon.

--

The league also said that other players can make between $200,000 to 300,000 and top rookies will make over $68,000

--

The deal also calls for 50-50 revenue sharing starting in 2021, based on the league achieving revenue growth targets from broadcast agreements, marketing partnerships and licensing deals.

--

Players no longer have to share hotel rooms on the road and will also get premium comfort tickets on planes.

OK, so the "compensation" isn't all salary. It includes various new bonuses and theoretical revenue sharing. Still, the whole package will be a lot more expensive.

The owners must have been presented with a solid plan regarding the future of the league. Investment is necessary and it seems like we're getting it.

I suspect the days of $15 League Pass and cheap ticket prices are gone, but this is what you guys wanted. Smile

I’m very curious what the new rookie scale will look like. Might drive more college juniors into declaring early.

With the higher salaries, we might also see more foreign players coming over or returning more frequently.

New WNBA CBA to include salary bump, other cash compensation increases
Mechelle Voepel (espnW.com)

Highlights of WNBA CBA

Code:
• Annual base pay for league's highest paid player jumps from $117,500 to $215,000.
• With other benefits, the league's top players could earn cash compensation in excess of $500,000.
• The agreement is for eight years, from the 2020 through 2027 seasons with a mutual opt-out provision after six years.
• 2020 salary cap will be $1.3 million, up from $996,100 in 2019, sources tell ESPN.
• Players who complete their contracts and have five or more years of service can become unrestricted free agents, unless they are tagged as a "core" player.
• The number of times a player can be tagged as "core" goes from four to three beginning this season, and drops to two beginning with the 2022 season.
• Players will receive full salary while on maternity leave, an annual childcare stipend of $5,000, and guarantee of two-bedroom apartments for players with children.

I pay a lot more for NBA's and NHL's streaming services despite watching less games on either of them than I do on WNBA LP so I wouldn't care about a price increase Smile

This is wonderful. Hopefully this includes more sponsors. I wonder if the Commissioner's Cup is an extension of the 34-game schedule? They're really giving players incentives to play only in the WNBA now and stick their teams in the offseason.

From ESPN:

Quote:
The in-season competitions will including something called the Commissioner's Cup, which will be further detailed when the league announces its 2020 schedule later this week.

"We will designate Cup games the first half of the season leading into the Olympic break this year," Engelbert explained. "And then [for] the two teams with the best records, we will have a final in August as our first game back to re-launch the season. In 2020, the cash prizes will be more moderate, but in 2021, we're going to step them up as we seek sponsors."

The 'designated cup games' thing, again similar to the NBA's plan, is weird. They talk about these events being inspired by European cups, but this isn't something Europe does at all. Cup games are entirely separate from league games. It messes up the whole concept, for me.

Wonder what the salary cap is going to be now with the increased salaries?

Never mind, I found it. It’s going to increase30%.

Megdal points out the in-season tournament is only two additional games, basically increasing the schedule to 36-games.

Quote:
The W.N.B.A. season itself also will change in some dramatic ways, if the deal is approved. A 34-game campaign in 2019 will become a 36-game slate this season. And the games themselves will be different, thanks to another innovation: the Commissioner’s Cup.

Certain games on the 2020 schedule will be designated as Cup games, with separate standings for this in-season competition. The two teams with the best records in Cup games will play for the Commissioner’s Cup title. Starting in 2021, the prize money for in-season tournaments will be a minimum of $750,000.

That's really not what it says. The two-game increase is to the base regular season schedule. The Cup Finals will be one game this year, but could be something more comprehensive in future, non-Olympic years.

What the new CBA means for the WNBA and its players
Mechelle Voepel (espnW.com)

Quote:
The WNBA and the Women's National Basketball Players Association had been negotiating since the players in 2018 opted out early from the previous agreement, which then ended after the 2019 season.

Here are some of the main things the new agreement will address.

Half a million salary for a WNBA season....Russia did it first and im sure they will up the anti- seeing as though American players could possibly be persuaded not to come over anymore . Happy for the players the younger college kids will jump at this opportunity now. Not too excited about this commisioners cup thing either but ive heard the league is enjoying it. Supposedly this is one of those sources of revenue they are trying to generate idk smh bologna.

Details here are important. Maximum and minimum salaries are doubling, yet the cap goes up 50%. Teams with many high salaried players (LA and Sea come to mind) are going to get squeezed unless manuevers around that extra $ (up to $500k) are allowed.

This was mentioned at the end of today's episode on The View. Robin Roberts will be on the show later this week and I hope they talk about it more.
