Capped by a school-record 44 points in Sunday's blowout win on the road against No. 22 Texas, McDonald did more than enough to make sure the unbeaten Wildcats enter the AP Top 25 this week. She also did plenty to claim espnW player of the week honors.

I guess those who thought Geno mishandled her might be having second thoughts ...

Impressive week for Walker - if she keeps this production up, she'll be an All-American. Will be interesting to see how she does against bigger '4' players.

She moved to the 3 when Irwin replaced Makurat in the lineup, which is when she really started dominating.

Her 41 points in Sunday's win over Wright State was one shy of the school record and three more than the rest of her teammates combined. Joens also grabbed 13 rebounds -- eight of which came on the offensive end -- shot 12-of-23 from the field, drew 15 fouls with her physical play and made 15-of-16 at the free throw line on her way to being named espnW national player of the week.

Quote:
Collier played the best game of her young career on Sunday, with 20 points and 19 rebounds to lift the Longhorns to a 69-64 upset of No. 1 Stanford, to earn espnW national player of the week honors.

Also considered: Brittany Brewer, Texas Tech; Kiah Gillespie, Florida State; Juicy Landrum, Baylor; Olivia Nelson-Ododa, UConn; Michaela Onyenwere, UCLA

I thought it was odd that they didn’t consider Ionescu, who had two triple doubles for the week.

Good point. There can't be too many weeks in history in which a player had two triple-doubles

To clarify, I do think they picked the right POW following their usual criteria of player most responsible for a big upset. But it does seem like they clumsily overlooked Ionescu for an honorable mention. Either that or they’re experiencing some major Ionescu fatigue.

I agree, I wasn't suggesting Collier wasn't worthy, but two triple doubles is worth at least honorable mention.

I think it has a little to do with "the UConn syndrome". Too much success for too long. Wink

Quote:
After spending the nonconference portion of the schedule playing far below her status as a preseason All-American, Charles opened Big Ten play with a statement. Her 23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals against Michigan on Saturday represented her best game of the season and propelled No. 12 Maryland to a 70-55 win over No. 23 Michigan. That performance earned Charles the espnW national player of the week.

The espnW player of the week made that point rather emphatically Sunday in No. 13 Kentucky's win against No. 22 Tennessee. Quote:
Ionescu totaled six rebounds in those final 18 minutes. Stanford had five.

Stanford turned over the ball 10 times in that stretch. Ionescu? Not even one.

How much more explanation is required in naming the espnW player of the week? Ionescu finished with a career-best 37 points and had 11 rebounds and seven assists in an 87-55 win.

Also considered: Ciary Duffy, South Dakota; Alex Fowler, Portland; Aliyah Jeune, USC; Ayanna Mitchell, LSU; Kristen Spolyard, Butler

Harris is having a career year her senior year, which I reckon is the way its supposed to go. She has increased her ppg and apg averages once SEC play began, and is really showing that she's going to be a leader on the floor in every game, from the start. Harris is automatic from the FT line, shooting 19-20 (95%) from the stripe in 7 SEC gms thus far, and 90% overall. She just recently became the program's all-time leader in career assists, in the Georgia game last Sunday, with now 617 assists and counting. IMO she's been the top PG in the SEC over the past 3 seasons.

In past seasons offensively, Harris would hesitate a bit in games taking shots and therefore her output would be inconsistent. Dawn Staley has pushed her to be more aggressive offensively, and it seems to have taken hold this season, shooting 45% from the field and 44% from the 3-pt line in SEC play thus far.

Now Coach Staley is working on the other senior, Herbert-Harrigan, to be more aggressive offensively. And she should - she's shooting 52% and 64% (7-11) from behind the arc in SEC play!! Kiki needs to take more attempts IMO....

One thing that raises a flag is that two freshmen are leading the team in scoring. Freshmen have a habit of having problems maintaining their production late int he NCAA's. Both Baylor and Oregon are senior-led teams and unfortunately the NCAA's have become the primary measure of success in wcbbb these days. But we shall see.

I agree, but the telling point for me was when the SEC schedule began - that's usually when one sees how "tough" a freshman is, because the SEC is so predicated on defense and rebounding, so there's always so much body contact and players wrestling to get into rebounding positions in the paint, etc. So when a true freshman like Boston has to start regularly tussling with juniors and seniors who are just as big as her, I would expect to see a decline in productive efficiency.

But as it has been, both Cooke and Boston have only improved in their play once the SEC began: Cooke from 10.4 ppg to 15.6 ppg, and Boston from 12.6 ppg to 15.1 ppg. Cooke has improved in her shooting, from 35% overall and 34% from the 3 to 41% overall and 42% behind the arc. Boston has only declined slightly in shooting from 62.7% to 59.7%, but is rebounding much more, and is fouling less than she was in non-conference play.

Both Boston and Cooke, along with Beal, lead the team in taking free throws: Beal is struggling with her shooting freebies, but both Boston and Cooke are solid FT shooters. And Boston and Cooke are only leading the team in scoring in SEC games: Cooke overall is 4th on the team in ppg - both seniors Harris and Herbert-Harrigan are 2nd and 3rd, behind Boston....
