So why is Yvonne Turner on the Hungarian National Team instead of Vandersloot and/or Quigley? Did they get kicked off the team because their marriage is illegal in Hungary?

They were naturalising players repeatedly for a while. Cyesha Goree was in there somewhere as well. I figured they had some kind of deal with each of them, which was the passport in return for a fairly limited run of actually having to show up to play.
Both Jonquel Jones (Bosnia) and Satou Sabally (Germany) are now officially officially tied to their European countries, by the way. Ashley Walker is also apparently Romanian, which is either new or I'd forgotten about. Every round of these games I find myself checking the boxscores primarily to see if any random American-sounding names jump out, rather than to see who won. |

It would be more interesting if VanderQuig were barred for being gay. That would qualify as political persecution and open up the possibility of applying for reinstatement as Americans. Of course, that assumes USA Basketball would want them which hasn't been the case in the past.

Jonquel Jones with Bosnia is interesting. Guess she doesn't have any decent teammates back in the Bahamas.

I remember asking Sancho Lyttle if she and Sophia Young had ever thought about getting together to build a meaningful St Vincent and the Grenadines team, and she basically laughed the idea off because it would've been the two of them and then nothing much else. The Bahamas are a lot bigger, but it probably would've been a pretty similar story for Jones.
The interesting thing with her, as we talked about on here ages ago when she was getting the passport, is that she very much played in international FIBA competition for the Bahamas. She was young, but it we're talking full senior competition. And FIBA let her switch anyway. As far as I know it's easily the most relaxed nationality switch they've allowed in the women's game. |

I am sure that Satou could play for Gambia if she asked for it to happen. Walker's been Romanian for a while.
Assuming a full strength team, Vandersloot's skill set is probably the most duplicated among the other players. Based on reading stuff about her over the years, I am pretty sure that Vandersloot's camp was the one that initiated naturalization. She's probably going to double or triple her income over the course of a decade so it might work out in the long run over holding out for Team USA.
Hungary has been fielding Goree in 3x3 events and given how much they focus on that, I wonder if they will field three naturalized players if they qualify (no limit in that format). They could toss out a lineup of Medgyessy (no Vandersloot, but an exceptional passer), Turner, Quigley, and Goree. |

What happened to DeWanna Bonner being Macedonian (and now presumably North Macedonian)? I don't remember if she ever even played one game for them, and they don't seem to be bothering to call her up for these qualifiers. |

A quick aside: Satou Sabally was born and raised in Berlin and has been playing for the German National Team since she was old enough. So, she’s never been on the radar.

I agree that Sabally has never been on the radar for USA Basketball, but according to ESPN, Satou was born in the US and after a few years in Gambia moved to Germany:
Quote: |
American-born Satou Sabally moved to Gambia when she was 2, and Germany when she was 7. The daughter of a German mother and a Gambian father, it was a basketball scholarship at the University of Oregon that brought her back to the country of her birth. |

Oregon's school newspaper, The Daily Emerald, has her listed as being born in New York. So do Wikipedia and Eurobasket.com.
Quote: |
Sabally was born in New York City but has played extensively for Team Germany in international play. She played in three different international competitions over recent years. Her standout performance came in the 2014 U16 European Championships, where she averaged 20.1 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. |

Her sister Nyara was born in Bandon, Oregon.

Just to be extra technical , she's been playing for the German age-group teams for years, but as far as I could find the games this week were her debut with the senior German national team. |

Ivana Dojkic has put in the performance of the tournament through Croatia's first 3 games, all wins - including a win over Germany in which Satou Sabally went for 33 and 10. The 5-11 22-year old point guard is averaging 28 points, 7 assists and 3 steals on 49% shooting and is 9/20 from 3. I've never heard of her so I don't know if these's numbers are an anomaly, but if she continues playing like this she should definitely be on the WNBA radar.

She went 10-24 for 30pts and 8 assists today against the DeWanna Bonner-led North Macedonia. awhom111, is that the first time Bonner's actually appeared in a game for the Macedonians?
I always enjoy being reminded of the 'nationality' of random Americans when we have these rafts of games. Jonquel Jones is Bosnian, and Markeisha Gatling is Montenegrin, for anyone else who'd forgotten. |

Dojkic should have been taken with a late round pick in 2017. She has had a solid career up to this point. USK Prague obviously relies on their frontcourt scoring a lot, but she should get a few chances to impress in the EuroLeague bubble.
FIBA says this was Bonner's first game so I guess that is true. It does feel like it has been forever since she was announced.
I was listening to a podcast with Haley Gorecki, who is in the process of getting Polish citizenship by regular person means, and even she forgot that Markeisha Gatling plays for Montenegro.
It is funny to see that Serbia has naturalized Yvonne Anderson. Allegedly their fans would riot if the men's team fielded a naturalized player because apparently letting someone like Charles Jenkins or DeMarcus Nelson, who has lived in Serbia long enough to qualify under regular citizenship laws is problematic, but letting Anderson and Danielle Page, who likely never stepped foot in the country prior to naturalization, play is fine.
I have not got to watch much, but there were interesting items on a number of levels. Jocyte actually got regular rotation minutes in a game that was not a blowout. One of my sleeper picks in the draft is Israeli guard Gili Eisner. Her shot was struggling today, but she still had 8 assists. Last season, she was basically a shooter only, but if she's added to her game during the long break, that makes her a lot more worth watching this season. |
