Minn at 23 loses. Bye Bye top 25

N Dame wins against Massey No 100 Fordham 60-55. Are they a top 4 seed? Not right now.

Ouch only a 5 pt win for ND? Baylor looks good. Grad transfer Erin Degrate scored 18 off the bench along with Egbos 14 off the bench. Another deep team for the bears. Maybe even better than last year.

Outside of one overly optimistic poster here, were many people expecting them to look like a top 4 seed, especially at the beginning of the season?

All new starters. The only seniors are grad transfers and a former walk-on coming off an injury. Only 1 junior. Only 9 scholarship players (one a former walk-on), now down to 7 for at least 6 weeks. Only 24% of the minutes played from last year returning (now down to 4%).

There are generally 3 things that make up the truly great seasons: experience, talent, and depth. You can have a very good or even great season without one of the 3 (usually the depth), but being down 2 (as ND is this year) is not really a recipe for success. They've got a lot of talent. It's just very young (or new to the system).

By the end of the season, with some playing time under their belts, they could become a top 4 seed (I'm assuming you mean a regional #1-#4 seed and not one of the 4 #1 seeds). However, they're going to have a rough road early on. Most people knew that. As I've said before, this is going to be an "interesting" year for ND Women's Basketball, in the Chinese curse sort of way.

BTW, you are judging a team that lost 5 starters (plus a junior to be bench player to transfer) in their first game (without an exhibition game first) that they start on the road? Talk about a tough grader... Wink

Who expected them to be a top 4 seed right now? Try Charlie Creme and the shills over at ESPN.

Will South Florida take Texas' spot after beating them at home?

Creme's predictions only start to look good after the NCAA Committee spots him the top 16 teams.

Also, as I pointed out, you said this after one game, that was on the road as an opener, without a previous exhibition game?

BTW, I have to say that I find it funny that a UConn fan, of all people, would refer to ESPN as "shills." They've never been that towards your team, right? Wink

LOL Not UConn.

ESPN panders to the teams that they hope will draw ratings. That's why Notre Dame was ranked in the top 16, why Minn (Whalen) got ranked. They like to diminish UConn whenever they can not because they dislike them but to give the rest of the country something to hope for.

https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/rankings

Week 2 rankings out. Maryland drops. UConn, off their scintillating win over Cal moves up to 4. Notre Dame stays about the same. Shows that either the voters didn't watch the games or there wasn't anyone good enough to replace them. The biggest up move was S Fla., moving up 10 slots from 35th.

Laughing Are there really no other teams out there that are better? Maybe it really is a totally 'down' year.

It's kind of interesting if you look at the ballots - actually no one did...all 10 ballots with both teams on them ranked USF higher.

But there were a lot of pollsters who only ranked Texas...

But that's the same thing ...

Actually, it's even worse.

Sadly, a lot of the media who get an AP vote do not take their position very seriously and do very little research and leg work to arrive at their votes.

Just calling out one in particular. Pat Babcock was one that really stuck out - she clearly does not do a thorough job on her voting. She is billed as a Chicago Sky analyst and the women's basketball reporter for the Daily Herald in Chicago and I found her picks sorely lacking in any real insight. She's not the only one, but I found it glaring since she promotes herself as such an active media member and women's basketball advocate.

Guess they're not all a Debbie Antonelli Surprised

Oregon state eked out a preseason WNIT victoryover Pacific University in Corvallis tonight. The final was 69-57 in the very athletic Tigers are putting on a run at the end of the game. Forward Brooklyn McDavid let the Tigers with 32 points. The beaver showed very little depth and their superstar freshman post post Taylor Jones looked very freshman today fouling out in 12 minutes. There are other freshman Kennedy Brown had a better showing. Goodman Slocum and Pivec ( 16 points 17 boards) saved the day.

For the record, Pacific is very good this year, in terms of the WCC ...

OrSU is starting two Freshmen posts. Seems like they are doing quite well considering their rookie-ness. I expect they will get better as the season progresses Better enough to stay in the top 10 is another question. And I'm guessing there will be a learning curve as they encounter good seasoned posts (see Ruthy Hebard for instance).
