JMU hosted Longwood last night in the opening game of its last season at the Convo Center and whooped up on the Lancers, 93-53. It was one of those "everybody plays, everybody scores" games, except it wasn't. For some reason, forwards Casey irvine and Bre Bellerand were in civvies and didn't play. But everyone else did play and did score. Kamiah Smalls had 25 and rookie Kiki Jefferson put in 17 for the Dukes. That Jefferson kid is the real deal...greased lightning and accurate! The only flaw was that senior guard Jackie Benitez got hurt in some kind of scrum in the 1Q that seems to have done something nasty to her shoulder. No rest, though, as the Dukes jump right in it with Villanova on Sunday and Maryland next Wednesday.

Anyone else off to a fast start?

Opening day was a plethora of 'big' guys beating up on the 'lil' guys. Soon we'll see some of the more 'equal' guys duking(in honor of JMU) it out...then we will see whose fur flies the farthest.

While Longwood is a so-called "li'l guy" (basement of the Big South last year and predicted to be there again this year), at least it wasn't a D-II and the team as a whole was not all that awful. They just had weak spots that were very easy to explore and crack wide open. At least it wasn't Baylor vs. New Hampshire. That was ugly.

Our Yotes flew to Boston to take on Northeastern on Tuesday. What should have been an easier game turned into a dog fight, with the Yotes needing a huge run at the end to take the game. They pulled it out, but it wasn’t pretty. Maybe the hundreds of screaming school children affected the Yotes a little bit - they sure affected the atmosphere in the gym! Northeastern was playing a lot of freshman and sophomores and boy did they look gutsy! There were some quirks, the refs were not all on the same page so the calling was a bit haphazard. Watching the replay on flohoops, it was interesting that the NU announcers even thought that the calls were a little wonky. But it was a very in entertaining, heart stopping finish to a fun game!

Thanks for reminding me that Minnesota is still just a 'lil' guy. Very Happy
