Experience isn’t necessarily required. If Laimbeer can do it, anybody with high school diploma should be able to do it, maybe even Trump.

Miller didn’t have any experience. Wade didn’t have any experience. Thibault didn’t GM until he came to the Mystics.

Pokey wouldn’t be a terrible choice. She wouldn’t be coaching (which is very good), but she might give an occasional motivational speech in the locker room. “Who took my &$&@%# gum?!”

With such a quick hook, I'm inclined to believe that Toler might have already been feeling the heat for her recent questionable moves... Hiring Fisher, not trading for Cambage, dealing with the Riquna Williams situation, trading Sims, taking Fisher's side in the Parker situation, etc.. And the 'pep talk' itself might have been a reaction to this heat. Confused

It's an unfortunate end to a great run... In my personal rankings of Best GM of All Time, Toler was #1. Laimbeer was #2. "Toler lost it. Screwed up 'this much'." I guess Bill is now the Top Gun! Exclamation Arrow

How about Parker for the Sky FRP and Gabby William+ Copper in aa sign and trade.

Well to even up the losses the Sky have taken on trade demands they should get additional pieces with Candace. In total the Sky have had the most forcefully traded away including: Dupree, Syl, GWH, Piph and Mopey. So this go around if cosmic forces were to even the scales a bit the Sky should get Parker, Nneka and Chiney for Copper.

With the boneheaded moves that a lot of GMs seem to make in the WNBA perhaps it would be a good idea to hire someone with common sense instead of a recycled experienced person who has been part of the good old girl/boy system. Most real fans could do better than most of the GM's in the system today.

Just take the 49ers for example. The hired an inexperienced coach and GM at the same time. They are rebuilding the team that was in chaos and totally devoid of talent. Using, out of the box thinking and common sense fueled intellegence they look like they will be contenders this season with still a huge upside left. Sometimes experienced people just recycle and repeat the same mistakes over and over. They are just experienced in repeating mistakes.

Not hardly! A Gm has to know more about players in the league than just his own team. Fisher does not have the background or experience with respect to the players in the league. It took him all season to just figure out his own team. I don't think he really followed the WNBA much until this season.

1. Fire Fisher and hire either Machelle Joseph or Joanne Boyle
2. Hire Nicole Powell as GM
3. Revamp Roster

Current Roster
Beard
Brown
Gray
Jones
Mabrey
Ogwumike
Ogwumike
Parker
Ruffin-Pratt
Vadeeva
Wiese
Williams

A. Beard retires
- It's about time

B. Trade Parker to Chicago for Samuelson and the 8th pick
- This way we can get a Max free agent plus a shooter

C. Trade Mabrey and the 8th pick (via Chicago 2020) to Atlanta for a 2021 1st round pick
- Gives Atlanta much needed shooting (last in the league by %)

D. Let Ruffin-Pratt walk in free agency

E. "Assuming" the Sun does not win the Finals, sign McCoughtry and Courtney Williams in Parker, Beard, and Ruffin-Pratt slots

Brown
Gray
Jones
C. Ogwumike
N. Ogwumike
McCoughtry
Samuelson
Vadeeva
Wiese
C. Williams
R. Williams
2nd Round Pick or Filler

Depth Chart
PG: Gray / Wiese or Jones
SG: C. Williams / R. Williams
SF: McCoughtry / Samuelson
PF: N. Ogwumike / Vadeeva
C: C. Ogwumike / Brown / 2nd Round Pick or Filler

Interesting ... but why Joseph and Boyle? And Powell?

I like Joanne Boyle, but her coaching record doesn't inspire a lot of confidence at the WNBA level. And all I know about Joseph is that she managed to alienate younger, more malleable players than the professionals she'd have to deal with. And it's not like she was a genius in college.

Nicole Powell is very smart, no question, but there's more to being a successful GM than raw intelligence. Experience in coaching and administration at the professional level is always a good thing.

Then again, the pool of candidates is far from deep, so those may be the best answers available ...

I couldn't think of any other coach that was somewhat successful and another person more intelligent and competent enough for the jobs. I definitely don't want a recycled coach. So I don't know. Unless we start looking at Holly Warlick

Neither was Brian Agler.

Boyle's record in college is comparable to Curt Miller's.

You're not getting RFA Courtney Williams for nothing (barring some shocking changes in the new CBA). If coring continues to exist (even temporarily), even the McCoughtry hope could be a stretch. And that's a terrible trade for Atlanta, but Atlanta have made terrible trades in the past, so who knows.

I can sort of understand how Penny Toler got herself in this predicament. She went straight from point guard to GM. She had no experience as an executive, or a manager, or even in an office setting. The Buss family had a very hands off approach to the Sparks. She never really learned where the lines are for a GM. Plus, when she started all the players were her friends and former teammates. She'd been in the trenches with them less than a year earlier. It would have been very natural for her to hang out in the locker room. By the time Lisa Leslie and company were all gone, the habit would be set in stone. Paula Madison had never been in sports before, so she wouldn't have known the situation was unusual. Magic Johnson may have thought it odd, but it was so entrenched by then there wasn't much he could do. Going into the locker room and trying to fire up the team using the kind of language used in a locker room would have seemed perfectly natural to her. That's why she wasn't apologetic when it leaked. She'd done the same sort of thing dozens, or even hundreds, of times before.

But she’d never done it in front of new Sparks acquisition Chiney Ogwumike, who would be the perfect anonymous source for ESPN, since she works there. And you could picture Chiney saying something like “you can’t do that in 2019”.

From the ESPN article.

Quote:
Several Sparks players told ESPN the speech made them feel uncomfortable and showed "total disrespect" as Toler called them "m-----f-----s" and suggested she'd replace them next year if they got swept by the Sun.

"You can't say that in 2019," one player told ESPN.

Iagupova beasting against Euroleague level competition. 28 pts, 8 ast, 6 stl
Sparks should probably make her a top priority if they can get her to come over in an Olympic year.
