Really no other choice. Didn't want her screwing up Ionescu's career. Gotta bring in a strong coaching staff with the ability to develop young talent (Ionescu, Durr, Nurse, Johannes).

I know some people were worried--no criticism intended--but I never believed Katie would be back.
I wish her well. And perhaps she'll be a good head coach in time. But she did a poor job for the Liberty and this move was essential.

I'm not surprised but still a bummer that Katie couldn't be successful in her first stint as a head coach. |

While I would never be “ecstatic” about someone losing their job, clearly Smith was inadequate as a head coach. Wish her well._________________

I can only imagine she'd politely decline, and it'd probably take some real outlay from Tsai anyway, but you've got to at least put a phone call in to Hammon, don't you? |

Said former Spurs player Pau Gasol: “Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period.” |
The only way Hammon should even take a call on the job is if they’d give her a package deal like Laimbeer got from MGM: President, GM (he could be but taking a load off), and coach.
Even then, why would you give up on the opportunity to be the first woman head coach in the NBA for a WNBA job? She’s helped break through that glass ceiling and other women are now flowing into NBA jobs. She needs to keep going in the NBA. On to the next level.

Maybe they waited to announce Smith's contract expiring so that they wouldn't have to wait too long to interview an assistant on one of the Finals teams (though probably not Marianne Stanley lol).

I can't imagine either of those seem very likely.
Maybe they go after Thibault Jr.?

If you're going the assistant route I'd expect he's on the list. Shelley Patterson as well, probably. But if the Sparks can hire a failed Knicks coach, maybe the Liberty will hire a failed Lakers coach. I hear Magic's been out of work for a little while . |

If we're going the wild and crazy route, I'd vote for Jeff Van Gundy. Yeah, he's got a great TV job, but he's from a coaching family and I think it's still in his blood. Jeff walked away from millions of dollars before (Knicks) and he's shown he doesn't care about status (transferred from Yale to junior college). Crazy is his middle name -- this is a guy who tried to tackle Alonzo Mourning, who outweighed him by 90 lbs. Working a short 34 game season with players who are more likely to listen to him could be the lower stress coaching opportunity JVG's been looking for. He has openly expressed admiration for the women's game, and the Liberty job won't have Dolan as an obstacle anymore.
