Epoupa going to Australia is bizarre. Going to Australia to play as an import when you (obviously) count as a European in Europe is strange, especially when you're the starting point guard for one of the top national teams in Europe. I would guess the Capitals have one of the highest spending levels in the league.

Yep, highly unusual to see a quality European here.

I've VPN'd myself out of Australia and the WNBL live stream is still working for me, which is a promising sign for the rest of the season.

Round 1 is in the books, but sadly other than today's Lynx game I barely saw a minute of action despite most of it being live streamed.

No major surprises yet. Canberra beating Adelaide was the closest thing to an upset, considering they were without Tolo & Ruef (and Wallace, but have no idea what her timeline is for a return), although with Griffin & Nurse they're always in with a shot. Keely Froling ended last season in great form and continued it today with 22 & 11.
Some familiar names putting up big numbers, including Lindsay Allen, Kelsey Griffin, Leilani Mitchell, Kia Nurse, Lauren Nicholson & Colleen Planeta.
Crystal Langhorne made a nice start to her WNBL career, but missed game 2 due to soreness. Bridget Carleton also started well with 20 & 7.

Adelaide 89 (Langhorne 20p 13r, Brook 19p, Talbot 12p 5a, Seekamp 11p 8a, Turner 6p 4r)
Sydney 79 (Planeta 30p 11r, Kunek 16p 6a, Wilson 11p, Scherf 10p 17r)
Boxscore

Bendigo 92 (Grays 14p 9r, Skinner 14p, Heal 14p, Wilson 9p 5r 8a, Lavey 9p)
Melbourne 87 (Allen 19p 6r 7a, Garrick 15p 5r, Magbegor 13p 7r, George 12p 9r, Cunningham 11p 4a, Beck 8p 5r)
Boxscore

Southside 81 (Mitchell 21p 6r 4a, O'Hea 19p 8r, Blicavs 13p, Russell 12p 4r, Cole 11p 5r 6a)
Townsville 72 (Carleton 20p 7r, Madgen 17p 7r 4a, Garbin 16p 7r, Young 7p 4r, Vanloo 6p 4a)
Boxscore

Canberra 90 (Nurse 28p 7r, Griffin 22p 20r 3b, Froling 22p 11r, Epoupa 6p 7r 8a)
Adelaide 83 (Nicholson 32p 4a, Seekamp 17p 7r 8a, Talbot 13p 7r, Turner 10p 6r)
Boxscore

Perth 79 (Schwagmeyer 21p 10r, Payne 13p, McGee-Stafford 12p 8r, Ebzery 10p 7a, Williams 10, Mansfield 7p 5r)
Sydney 62 (Kunek 15p, Planeta 11p 9r, Scherf 11p 8r, Kuster 10p 8r)

All the new American bigs could shake things up in the WNBL. Along with Langhorne, you have Mercedes Russell, Imani McGee-Stafford, and Brianna Turner. Also interesting to see that Canberra replaced FLB with Epoupa. You go from an outside bomber who gets to the basket through guile to an outright speed demon who isn't a consistent shooter. That's a major change in skillset and style.

Is Heal good enough to be drafted to the WNBA and to lock down those rights?

Heal should be considered a likely draftee in 2021 at this point assuming no rules changes in the new CBA.

A lot will happen between now and then that could change things, but at this point, 2021 looks like one of the deepest international classes ever.

Bendigo Spirit have signed Nevada alum, Teige Morrell (nee Zeller) as a short term replacement for Becca Tobin, who was concussed at training during the week.

One sizeable upset this round, with Sydney Uni knocking off Uni of Canberra. The rest went to script although Adelaide needed OT to get past an undermanned Perth. Brianna Turner was a killer in that one. Lindsay Allen is also looking great right now.

awhom111 already covered it, but anyway....

Round 4

Ariel Atkins made her debut for Perth, who went to OT for the 3rd time this season ... all of them losses. Mad
Bendigo beating Adelaide was a slight upset, as was Southside winning the battle of the 2 undefeated teams, seeing as they had played a tough game the night before while Melbourne were fresh.
Canberra avenged last week's loss to Sydney very emphatically.

Round 5

An early round this weekend with the Opals leaving tomorrow morning for the Olympic pre-qualifiers. As a result there is no WNBL action next weekend.
The surprise of the round was Sydney Uni getting the W in Townsville. The rest went pretty much to script, although Canberra's margin over the previously-unbeaten Southside was pretty big.

Marianna Tolo is returning to form nicely after her injury, Brianna Turner & Kia Nurse are keeping their names in the MVP conversation, Katie Ebzery's strong recent form continued, Sophie Cunningham had her best WNBL game to date, and Olivia Epoupa is always worth tuning in to see ... which sadly is difficult. Most of the WNBL social media chat lately has been around how awful the live streaming has been so far. The first season of WNBA Live Access was pretty patchy, but the WNBL's effort is somehow way worse.

Sydney 82 (Kunek 22p 4a, Kuster 17p 6r, Wilson 16p, Tupaea 12p 8r, Planeta 11p 6r)
Townsville 73 (Garbin 19p 7r 3b, Bishop 14p 5r 7a 3s, Carleton 13p, Madgen 12p 5r)

Boxscore

Adelaide 105 (Turner 22p 8r, Talbot 18p 8a, Brook 16p 6r, Nicholson 16p, Seekamp 10p 9a, Hurst 6p 7r)

Round 7

Things pretty much went to script again. Flames with an arguable upset over the Spirit in the lower end of the standings. Southside, Melbourne & Canberra all handled their business as expected.

What's the deal with Kia Nurse? She went from leading the league at 37 mpg to suddenly coming off the bench. I know Kia's shooting has been crappy, but if the coach liked her enough to keep her on the floor for 37 mpg, then it would be a drastic change of heart to suddenly reduce her PT to 21 minutes. Is Kia injured?

I very much doubt it is shooting-related. Might be just a load management thing for her. Kinda makes sense matchup-wise vs Townsville too. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Round 8

Imani McGee-Stafford finally returned to action after her ankle injury (and looked pretty good considering the long time out), but the Lynx still went 0-2 for the round.
Surprise of the round was Sydney beating Adelaide behind 28 & 12 from Colleen Planeta. Player of the Week could be headed Kia Nurse's way for her 32 points in a big win. She was back in the starting 5 after what apparently was an injury concern to her knee last week. Seems ok now! Darcee Garbin is not without a chance after 27 & 7 today. Brianna Turner probably the other chance after 2 very solid games, though one was in a loss.

Perth won a game vs a team other than Sydney! Surprised

Round 9
The big one this round was #1 Southside @ #2 Canberra - the only team to have beaten Southside. Canberra went in as surprisingly heavy favourites but couldn't get it done in a close one.
Townsville & Perth added much-needed wins, and Adelaide kept their place in the top 4 safe with an easy win over Bendigo, who surprisingly cut one of their imports - Rebecca Tobin - after the previous round.

Round 10

A few key players missing due to injuries this week. Kelsey Griffin is expected to be out ~ 6 weeks, which likely rules her out of Opals duties. O'Hea & Russell missed the Flyers game. I didn't hear word on how serious either of their injuries are, so hopefully at the less serious end of the scale. Sophie Cunningham came down hard on her back today and took no further part in the game. She looked very shaken up but hopefully no major damage was done. The battle for 4th place is still alive with Adelaide losing again, and both Perth & Sydney winning, but sadly Sydney lost their most consistent player, Colleen Planeta, to a knee injury at the end of their 2nd win of the round.
Keely Froling replaced Griffin in Canberra's starting 5 and amassed 30 & 10, which still might not be enough to win POTW after Alice Kunek's big weekend.

Bendigo 81 (Ernst 20p 7r 5a, Wilson 19p 5r, Wehrung 15p, Grays 11p 6r, Richards 5p 5r)

For those that saw our game against Adelaide last night you’ll know that Sophie Cunningham had a pretty intense fall while going for a layup. We just want to let all our fans know that Sophie is being treated today, however first diagnosis is that she hasn’t incurred any serious injuries. In true Sophie style, while obviously sore, she attended training this morning to be there with the team. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments.

Round 11

Adelaide were the main winners this round with 2 wins to all but secure their playoff spot. Bendigo won the battle of the cellar dwellers. Perth blew a golden opportunity to keep their playoff hopes alive against a Griffin-less Canberra team.
Leading rebounder for the round somehow was 5'5 Olivia Epoupa, who pulled in double digit boards in both her games.

The Canberra-Perth game for Sunday has been canceled because of the fires in Australia.

Quote:
Head of Women in Basketball, Lauren Jackson said the decision was made in the best interest of the fans, players and officials.

“We understand that it is disappointing to have had to cancel the game, but after multiple discussions with both clubs and the league, the decision was the most appropriate and safest course of action,” Jackson said.

Lucille Bailie, General Manager of the UC Capitals, said the team was looking forward to playing at AIS Arena again, but the safety of the players and fans comes first.

“The smoke covering Canberra has been severe and knowing the weather conditions are only expected to worsen this weekend, we trust that this is the best decision for everyone,” Bailie said.

Kia Nurse and Kelsey Griffin are making donations to the relief effort. The Liberty press release below provides links for anyone interested in donating.

Luuuc, wherever you are, I hope you're OK. Thoughts and prayers (agnostic equivalent) with you and all of Australia.

I'm over on the west coast, unaffected by these fires, but yeah they have been seriously catastrophic. Towns and massive areas of land wiped out.
The WNBL community have done a nice job of getting behind the fund-raising efforts. Kia was one of the first to pitch in.

Notable performances this weekend were Shyla Heal breaking out for a career-best 24 & 8 to help Bendigo upset Canberra, and Nicole Seekamp dishing out a league record 20 assists in Adelaide's impressive win over Southside. I wonder what the story is with Becca Tobin leaving and then popping up relatively quickly in Belgium.

On the Bendigo front, Demi Skinner might be adding herself to the list of players snubbed in the last draft.

Also, no offense to him since we were on the same class project once and he was perfectly nice, but if this Miles Plumlee is the answer, then I am a little concerned about the question.
