Brazil has the usual suspects - DeSouza, Dos Santos, Colhaldo, and Dantas.

Can someone explain how Puerto Rico is entered in this event, as a US territory? Are territories, dependencies, overseas regions, etc now permitted to play in international competitions, assuming they have the talent and money to do so? Someone educate me.

I see Kim Smith is still playing for Canada....good for her! (I'm thinking her grandkids are gonna be in the stands! Razz )

I'm curious as to why Nurse and Achonwa aren't playing for Canada.

Canada up big 31-13 at the end of the first. When Canada has been able to get out and run in transition, they look good.

Aaliyah Edwards from Canada looks very good for a 17 year old. Very interested to see how she continues to play this week and as she progresses.

Tradition mostly (they always have been able to do so and have for many years).

Since the only key is not finishing at the bottom of the standings when it comes to the Olympics, quite a few teams are missing some players (same is true for the Asian teams playing this week). Expect stronger rosters in November as the competition gets tougher and then the strongest possible teams in February.

Thank you. I didn't realize that, as I don't usually track international contests until the Olympics happen.

Did nobody tell Argentina that the tournament was starting or did they wear the wrong uniforms?

I thought Kim Smith married and was playing under her married name of Kim Gaucher. Unless she went back to her maiden name.

She still seems to be playing as Gaucher. I would guess awhom111 listed her old name to help people recognise who she was.

I always go by original name unless there is a legal name change due to abuse or something similar.

Recap of both games:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2019/09/americup-finals-september-29th/

The groups for the next round have been announced...

...and they are the same as the ones for this tournament minus the last place teams, which means we went through a lot of trouble to eliminated two teams.

Yeah, I thought it was pointless to have this and a separate qualifying tournament.

This whole system is completely insane and very, very FIBA.

The pools basically work out as a Caribbean section (with Canadian hosts) and a South American section (with American guests). All of this seems like a hell of a lot of work when we knew at least half the qualifiers from Asia/Americas before anything even started. Dunno why they couldn't just use the continental tournaments as the qualifiers, like they did in Europe.

I forgot to mention that I am now more frustrated that the United States did not field a good enough team on the Men's side to win. If they had, USA Basketball would simultaneously hold every single available FIBA trophy. Considering how much of a miracle it was for the G League players to win the men's Americas title and our poor record historically at the U19 Men's level, it will be hard to do so four years from now.

I am hoping that this sets the stage in the future for expansion of the continental tournaments. I think there is a case for the Americas and Africa to go to 16. I would like Asia to go to 12 with an A Division and B Division in the same tournament.
