Don’t forget about this game. Colombia was a tough out for Brazil.

Columbia University is a strong favorite against the U.S. Same would be true if Columbia plays Colombia, the country. Smile

Alas, Columbia isn't as good against other Ivy League teams.

I can't recall seeing an emptier arena. Did they bar spectators?

Puerto Rico just had a 6.0 earthquake and a hurricane is nearing the island, so I doubt watching a basketball game is on their minds right now.

May we ask again: WTF is Sessions doing on this team?

If this was happening in a sport/discipline/gender/tournament that anyone gave a crap about, there'd be an absolute flood of outrage all over the place. It makes no sense whatsoever. Staley might as well have taken her mom in that 12th spot. It's insane.

It's unreal. She hasn't played in 3 years and never played a minute on a WNBA team. Can't recall this ever happening on any other level. Staley should be ashamed of herself.

Well, she's no longer with us, so I'm calling too soon on that, even allowing for the rules of humour differing from humor.

It's just sad, given that there are probably thousands of women out there more qualified for that last spot, including plenty of other people Staley has coached. If they needed an extra player, they should have just brought in someone playing in Puerto Rico like Jordan Reynolds.

Why should she? People set their own bars. She’s using her recruiting tools like others in her position have in the past. #CryMeARiver

Yes, "people set their own bars." But we're allowed to say that the "bars" that some people "set" are absolutely ridiculous. And completely unfair to more deserving candidates for that spot on the team.

If some other coaches in the past have made terrible choices, does that mean that we can't criticize Staley or any future coach for another terrible choice? That every terrible choice is now OK?

I'm guessing Loyd would've taken Sessions' spot had she not dislocated a finger; but even that still doesn't really explain things Confused

Was there any other healthy player who actually came to camp and tried out for the last guard position?

There were several other college players in camp. The position they play seems pretty irrelevant when Sessions is playing 3 minutes in 50+ point blowouts anyway. And obviously they could've invited other college players, or gone further down the fringe pro options. Blake Dietrick would've made more sense than Sessions.

I’m not sure why people are so worried about the third PG spot on the AmeriCup roster. Maybe they tried for Dangerfield to see how she looks but she wasn’t available, so they just got a filler. Makes no difference. The only player who is a lock for the Olympics from this roster is Fowles. DeShields has a pretty good chance of making it. Collier has a good chance depending on what happens with Maya and McCoughtry. I feel Charles is at AmeriCup because she needs to audition for a spot. She didn’t have a great WNBA season and the USAB post is stacked with MVP-level players: Fowles, Griner, Delle Donne, Ambassador, Wilson, Ogumwike. Who you sending home instead of Charles?

Back to the third PG situation. Why bring in somebody decent when you have Bird and Diggins looking on and CGray a virtual look to make the Olympic squad? Diggins has been waiting years for a spot on the senior national team... and CGray not quite as long. Don’t want a send a message that they could be overlooked again. So just bring in a non-threatening filler.

Justice would then have been doubly served.
