Apparently no one was interested in her at $96K when she was on waivers.

I dunno, she’s been an up and down player in her career, as shown by winning the MIP twice. I could see PHX wanting her back considering their guard situation and she’s assimilated with the team, but does another team throw big money at her? After Reeve’s pursuit of DRob resulted in losing Howard and predictably not seeing great results from DRob, I’m hoping Reeve is gunshy about eagerly going after her. She seems to have better luck just sitting back and seeing what might fall into her lap, like what happened with Sims and Talbot.

Maybe Cambage and Laimbeer try and grab FLB this off-season?

That's the least likely scenario. Evil Bill had her in New York and didn't like what he saw.

That's not entirely true. Laimbeer certainly didn't like FLB when he first got her, but I think a grudging respect developed over time. However, by then Leilanil had already come to regard the situation as a bad one -- laughingly but openly talking to the press about having a coach who hates small guards. Along the way, Mitchell received an invitation to join the Opals, so she sat out the 2014 season and played for Australia instead. I think this caught the Liberty by surprise. A few days before the draft, they suddenly looked up and found that the only point guard on their roster was Kamiko Williams. Yikes! So, they scrambled around and signed two PGs in Anna Cruz and Chucky Jeffery. They also took Meighan Simmons in the draft. Cruz joined the Liberty right before their first preseason game and ended up saving their bacon.

Meanwhile, Mitchell had a long-term partially guaranteed contract. Laimbeer didn't want to guarantee the 2015 year at what was a high rate for a backup, so he cut her while Leilani was suspended. At the time Bill said something like, "We may revisit the situation next year." This indicates to me that he wasn't averse to having Mitchell back under the right circumstance. However, Laimbeer subsequently lost his GM title to Kristin Bernet during the weird firing and rehiring that took place in the winter of 2014-15. As I recall, Bernet ended up revealing in an interview that she really liked Mitchell and had interest in re-signing Lei. However, it was Mitchell who chose Phoenix. So, the idea that Laimbeer ran Leilani out of NY is not entirely true. It was more a case of her getting bad vibes early, then deciding to cut ties quickly and move on.

She seems to be quite versatile. She was with the Mystics for a season or two, and quickly took over for Latta.

I really thought that Seattle might have made an offer for her after Bird went down and she was on waivers.

Later in the season, I was wishing that she was on the Lynx roster.

I think Lei will be back in Phoenix if Phoenix wants her. And I think Phoenix will want her. Phoenix has to many other things to worry about and they know what they get with her.

I believe the reason Lei didn't get picked up off waivers was the same reason why Phoenix put her on waivers; she had a big contract. Anyone picking Lei off waivers would have gotten her contract too and most teams were at max or near max. Phoenix took a risk putting her on waivers but, IMO, not much of one.

The interesting question will be Bonner. I would like to see her back in Phoenix and with the new CBA, I think it is possible. Just have to wait and see.

I’m trying to work through this for PHX because on the surface, it looks easy to do.

New Max
Bonner 215,000
Griner .215,000

Old Max
January 119,500
Taurasi .119,500

Old Rookie Contracts
Cunningham 43,422
Allana Smith 50,530
Bri Turner ... 42,092

According to Richyyy, the players on old contracts are stuck at what it was (which I find hard to believe). Assuming that’s correct,

Cost for these 7 Players
808,044

Remaining cap space for 5 Players
491,956

Average Payout Per Remaining Player
98,391

So with Bonner being signed-and-traded to Connecticut in exchange for Connecticut’s two 2020 first-rounders and their 2021 first-rounder (LINK HERE), that has to mean the rebuild is on in Phoenix. Even a healthy duo of Taurasi and Griner couldn’t possibly raise the team to the level of contender status - I’m not even sure they’d be pretenders with who they’ve lost this offseason and how young they’re gonna be - right?

I expect Griner will be sitting out. I think she has a to get a tooth pulled.

Pheonix doesn't rebuild - they tank.

Laughing Would Griner be able to sit out the W season and still be on the Olympics roster? I know there’s no rule but I feel like her attempting to do that may be frowned upon lol.

That, in fact, is exactly what Taurasi did. Amazingly she was too injured to play except for one month in the middle of the season.

Taurasi only played 8 games that season, but that doesn’t constitute “sitting out”. She was on the bench getting full pay.

I don't see Griner sitting in what might be Taurasi's final season. Even if Phoenix wants to rank, who are they tanking for in the 2021 draft?

If they trade for Diggins then they certainly are not going to rebuild. If Diggins goes to the Lynx then yeah

What does Phoenix actually have on their roster that Agler/Bibb/Dallas would want? I doubt they want more draft picks, and none of the young players seem like they stand out enough yet. Honestly the only way I see Diggins-Smith going to Phoenix is if she were part of a package deal for Griner. Maybe that happens, but only if Griner wants to leave Phoenix as much as Diggins-Smith wants to leave Dallas.

As it stands, Phoenix now has 5 picks inside the entire first half of the full draft. They can't be done wheeling-n-dealing, or at least they shouldn't be. I'll bet they try and move up in the draft by offering their two newly acquired first-round picks. Atlanta should definitely consider trading down. If Sabally doesn't declare, Indiana should consider trading down. I'd loooove to trade Langhorne or/and KML to Phoenix for one/two of those two second-rounders, let alone one of the first-rounders. Even a GM like Valavanis should have enough brains to make that sort of move (keyword: should).

Langhorne would be a nice fit for PHX, and SEA has to lose a current contract if they even want to add one draft pick.

Maybe SEA can get #7 back by trading Langhorne for it.

I kind of feel the Diggins trade will involve three teams.

Even for a rebuild team having all those draft picks doesn't make sense so I would expect something else is going to happen. For the Mercury, I think it really depends on whether they think Taurasi is done or has a good year or two left. If the latter, they might as well cash in those draft picks for vet players who can fill some voids and try to build a "respectable" team (~.500) especially since tanking is no longer rewarded like it once was and the upcoming drafts seem fairly weak. Better to wait till there is more talent out there.

If they feel Taurasi is really done for good - then rebuild make more sense.

"Let's have one more shot at a title" failed dismally in 2019. It was always going to be against the odds to load up on vets yet again and have them stay healthy. So we might as well rebuild now.
Not too many rebuilds happen on the back of picks like #7 and #10 though so it's not off to a good start.
At least we got *something* for Bonner I guess.

It's predicated on Taurasi being healthy and effective, which seems like a long shot at this point
