Screens like that are set dozens of times every game. Just because Atkins unfortunately got hurt doesn't mean it was illegal. She's had trouble with getting around opponents this season, definitely another thing to work on.

I agree that it wasn't even illegal unless you're being ultra-picky, but those midcourt ones where the player has the chance to pick up speed are always extra-scary. We always say "oh, that's on her teammates for not warning her" but they're often looking the other way or don't have time or whatever else. I'm a little surprised they haven't tried to take those kinds of screens out of the game, but at the same time I'm not sure how you'd word the rule to do it. They're kinda like the basketball-screen equivalent of the high-speed tackles during punts and kickoffs that the NFL has been trying to get rid of in recent years.

When Big Syl leaned that made it illegal and the foul was called. If she had stayed still and not leaned it would have been clean. No foul.

But she didn't "lean" (at least if lean is meant leaning illegally). By rule you are not required to be 100% motionless. You are allowed movement, you just can't extend outside of that invisible box around yourself. And Fowles never did that. When it was clear that Atkins was going to barrel into her you can see Fowles slightly gather herself to brace for impact, but her arms never extended outwards, and her movement was within that legal "box".

Watch other plays besides that one and watch players set screens and see what is called and what is not. That was a routine screen.

It can be an illegal screen and go uncalled. For example, watch Lauren Jackson on this play:

Also even if she was 100% motionless this still would have been an incredible hard hit against Atkins. She was running and had no idea that the screen was coming. Syl couldnt have done anything different(besides not setting the screen) to avoid Atkins getting hit like this

And a foul wouldn't/shouldn't have been called which therefore is a legal screen. But she was called, it was looked at and determined a common foul.

The review had nothing to do with determining whether or not it was a foul. They cannot reverse a call even if they determine they messed it up. All they can do is not make it flagrant.

The fact that it wasn't flagrant upon review is more evidence that it wasn't actually a foul at all, since if it had been illegal contact it would likely have been considered to the head or neck area.
