One thing I’ll give Trump - he appears to be in favor of gun safety reform.

Numerous times, he’s expressed the idea that we need it. And then typically, Republicans reel him in and set up a meeting with the NRA, and he doesn’t do anything because he doesn’t really care that much. (Cares much more about his racist policies)

But seriously, if Moscow Mitch were to allow gun safety reform to pass the senate, Trump would sign it, and then would claim gun safety reform as a Republican policy.

He probably says it in order to receive more $$ from the #GOPNRA.

#MachineGunMoscowMitch must be defeated.

I grew up a white nationalist. We never blamed ourselves for mass shootings like El Paso.

Quote:
We have been in an era of white nationalist violence for years. Growing up among the leadership of the white nationalist movement, there was a routine every time reports of a new act of mass violence ticked across cable news. We would hope the attackers were not white, and, if so, that they did not espouse our ideology. When they often did, the national fallout and blame could last for weeks

Ultimately, accepting that we were not guiltless when we condemned whole swaths of the American population, and threw up our hands when a lone wolf took our rhetoric to violent ends, was a major part of what led me to condemn and speak out against the white nationalist movement in 2013 at the age of 22.

Quote:
It should be clear to us that rhetoric vilifying immigrant communities and communities of color is a threat to those already vulnerable people. And yet the administration is willfully turning away from its responsibility to defend all Americans. The president is taking the same position that many white nationalists have: Condemn individual acts of violence, while continuing to attack those threatened communities.

We must be clear that words have consequences, and the threat is not from immigrant communities, but rather they are the ones threatened.

offices of usa today, which i think is somewhere in virginia now, have been evacuated over reports of a gunman. no real details. cnn reported. sorry, no links. my brother had texted me about it, and i just heard it on cnn usa, but no details.

clarification: usa today was always in virginia, but i think they've moved out in the burbs from their original site in rosslyn, just across the river from georgetown.

Supposedly mistaken reports of an armed man.

that must be why there haven't been any more reports. seems cnn hasn't done a good enough job dismissing the initial report.

it's just. so. fucking. exhausting. i don't want to watch or read or listen, but i can't rely on second-hand information, not in these times. it brings me down and damages my spirit, and i'm sure that, little by little, those precious elements in all of us that make us good people are eroding. by sheer exposure, we will become meaner, less civil, and certainly - already - numb over time.

Trump’s openness to extensive background checks for gun buys draws warning from NRA

Quote:
NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre spoke with Trump on Tuesday after the president expressed support for a background check bill and told him it would not be popular among Trump’s supporters, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss internal talks. LaPierre also argued against the bill’s merits, the officials said.

The NRA, which opposes the legislation sponsored by Sens. Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), declined to comment.

Advisers to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he would not bring any gun-control legislation to the floor without widespread Republican support. Trump has waffled, current and past White House officials say, between wanting to do more and growing concerned that doing so could prompt a revolt from his political base. Even some supporters of the Manchin-Toomey bill, which would expand background checks to nearly all firearm sales, say it is unlikely to pass.

“I don’t think the president or his Republican allies are going to become out of nowhere advocates of aggressive gun control,” said Matt Schlapp, who leads the American Conservative Union and is a close ally of Trump.

El Paso Shooting Victims Declined to Meet Donald Trump During His Hospital Visit: Reports

Quote:
The exact number of recovering victims who declined to meet with the president is unclear. A spokesman for the city’s University Medical Center said that the eight victims there on Wednesday — five in critical condition and three in serious — all did not meet with Trump.

“This is a very sensitive time in their lives,” UMC’s Ryan Mielke told The Washington Post. “Some of them said they didn’t want to meet with the president, some of them didn’t want any visitors.”

Quote:
“I wish he [Trump] wouldn’t have needed to come. I think he just came to do a circus,” Saul Chavez told KDBC. “He was the one who brewed up all of this hatred against Mexicans. I guess he forgot what he said.”

Relatives of a father and daughter who were injured, with the father still in the hospital, told KDBC they didn’t want him there either.

“The whole family said if he wants to go into the room, no. We don’t want him in the patient’s room. And we respect all of our families opinion,” relative Leticia Mariscal said. “Because of the way he talked against Mexicans, against Hispanics so we don’t want to a person that are against our Mexicans.”

2 funerals for Dayton shooting victims bring out hundreds, including Ohio’s governor

Quote:
Derrick Fudge died of gunshot wounds in the arms of his son, and Saturday saw his family and friends lovingly embracing his life’s memories.

Fudge, 57, was a Springfield resident and one of nine people shot and killed by Connor Betts, 24, of Bellbrook in the early morning of Aug. 4 in Dayton’s Oregon District. Betts was killed by police within a minute of the incident starting.

And earlier Saturday, many attended the burial services of another victim of the shooting, Saeed Saleh.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, Springfield Mayor Warren Copeland and Dayton Mayor Whaley are among the hundreds in attendance for Fudge’s service at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield.

Family members described him as a loving family man, passionate about those he cared for and devoted to helping the needy through collecting donations for the Salvation Army during Christmas season.

El Paso shooting victims' families and friends still fear for their safety

Quote:
Aug. 11--EL PASO, Texas -- As the Torres family gathered around their television in El Paso to watch reports of the shooting rampage in Gilroy, Calif., that left three dead, they worried about relatives in nearby San Jose, and felt relieved after learning they were safe.

Quote:
Some Latino residents now debate with friends whether being darker- skinned puts them at greater risk, whether it is safe to shop again at Walmart, if they should avoid shopping with their children, or whether to send their children back to school later this month.

"It seems like this is what it means to be an American " now, Torres said.

Quote:
Lascurain, a real estate agent who lives by the El Paso Country Club, said neighbors messaged her Thursday night, panicked at what sounded like gunfire. It turned out to be fireworks at the country club, she said.

Other friends told her their children were afraid to return to school, worried they might be targeted for being Latino, especially those with darker skin.

"You don 't see a lot of racism here, " she said, "so for this to happen here, a lot of people are scared."

Quote:
"It 's something the white community has been in denial about for some time : that there are people in their communities who have been radicalized, " he said. "But as someone who is half Mexican, I don 't have that option. We don 't have the luxury of just going home."

Dayton shooter hid gun, ammo from parents, new documents alleged

Quote:
The Oregon District gunman had a friend purchase the body armor, weapons parts and a 100-drum magazine he used in the massacre so his parents wouldn’t know he had them, federal authorities alleged in a complaint first obtained by the Dayton Daily News.

The friend, Ethan Kollie, told authorities he stored the purchases at his Kettering apartment, and about 10 weeks ago helped shooter Connor Betts assemble the weapon used in the Aug. 4 massacre, the complaint says.

Fourth board member resigns from NRA in a sign of further upheaval

Quote:
She is the fourth member in the past two weeks to leave the board of the NRA in a sign of further upheaval within the nation’s most powerful gun rights group.

Golob, a regular on shooting shows who has won multiple competitions and is an advocate for women’s use of firearms, did not state a reason for her departure in a note posted on her website.

“I am proud to have had the opportunity to represent the members of the NRA but I can no longer commit to fulfilling the duties of a director,” she wrote. Golob was a well-known personality in the gun rights world and produced videos for the NRA with titles such as “Helping Women Choose a Gun.”
