There are several considerations regarding the AAC -> NBE move when you factor in everything and not just WBB.

1. The People's Republic of Nutmeg is deep in the red, Hartford is near bankruptcy, and hence there's not much state money to prop up athletic losses in the state university.

2. The vast majority of UConn MBB fans seem to think the move to the NBE will make recruiting in the player-rich northeast much easier for new coach Dan Hurley, and hence are in favor of the move.

3. AAC baseball is very good and NBE not very good, so the baseball team goes into the slums. But not many care about baseball.

4. The AAC exit fee is $10 million. (About the same as UConn owes fired MBB coach Kevin Ollie, who gets blamed for screwing up UConn's quondam basketball powerhouse.) Where is UConn going to get that money? There's a rumor that the NBE school are willing to pony up a share because they want UConn so much.

5. The fate of the terrible football team is undecided. The NBE has no football and the AAC says it doesn't want UConn football alone. That leaves finding some mid-major conference or going independent. In any case, UConn seems to have given up its always wet dream of having a big time football program in a region that doesn't care about college football.

6. The NBE may be able to renegotiate a more lucrative TV deal with UConn in the league, plus UConn may be able to keep its side deal with SNY or Fox or someone.

7. The biggest argument I see against the move is that going to the no-football NBE will be tantamount to UConn giving up on ever getting into a Power 5 conference. I think that argument is sound. However, the counter-argument is that UConn will never get into a P5 conference anyway. The football team will always be too crappy, and any P5 conference that wants to poach from the AAC in the future will never go for UConn; they will go instead for Houston, Cincinnati or the two rising Florida giants, UCF or USF.

The general current feel is that all UConn sports except football will go to the NBE, and that football will be kept alive in D1 but no one knows where.

Great analysis ... thanks.

Re UConn football: Being unaffiliated gives UConn more flexibility should a P5 conference expand or a P5 team shift leagues. It also means UConn can schedule cupcakes and qualify for a bowl every year.

I do hope you're being facetious, Clay. UConn football is about on a par with some not-very-good FCS schools. They might hope to be invited into C-USA if they're lucky, but they'd fit better in CAA.

Interesting that Val Ackerman is still at the helm of the Big East. There aren't many more qualified ambassador's of the women's game than Val. I wonder what moves were made to woo UConn back? Was she the lead on the pitch?

Honestly, I do not believe all that much wooing was required.

UConn received a 2020 commitment from Mir McLean. She's a 5-11 jumping jack forward who averaged 18.3 points and 12.9 rebounds as a junior at Roland Park Country School in Maryland.

Named after the Mir space station, she's currently ranked 17 on Prospects Nation, 32 on HoopGurlz and 40 on Blue Star.

According to this September 2018 article,

Quote:
At a combine-type event hosted by former NBA point guard John Lucas and featuring elite players from all over the country, McLean finished No. 1 in the vertical jump (27.45 inches), No. 2 in sprints and No. 1 in overall testing.

Ron James, who coaches McLean with Team Takeover, said McLean can get either hand 6 inches above the rim. And while she hasn't dunked a basketball yet, she has thrown down a volleyball.

Mir's an AAU teammate of Angel Reese, the HoopGurlz #2 ranked 2020 player, on Team Takeover. Here's a video of a full game between Team Takeover and FBC United, which features another 2020 UConn target, 6-6 Kamilla Cardoso from Tennessee, ranked #5 by HoopGurlz, as well as 6-2 Treasure Hunt, also of Tennessee, ranked #36 by HoopGurlz.

https://portal.stretchinternet.com/suvtv/portal.htm?eventId=526190&streamType=video

I'll write a review of this game and McLean's performance when I watch the whole thing. In the first 10 minutes, Angel Reese (who's eliminated UConn) looks very impressive.

Meanwhile, here's a short video about McLean, who has a Magic Johnson smile.

I'm sure. Rolling Eyes

Maybe if they sign Fudd they can work a trade with either Baylor or Oregon for another post in exchange for a couple of guards. Smile

Saylor Poffenbarger is a nice and early get. She has a rep of being a good deep shooter, even though she did have the worst overall shooting percentage on the U16 team -- 32% overall and 31% from 3. Hopefully, that was an anomaly of youth. She did get the fourth most minutes on the team, was second in assists with a 22/8 TOR, and averaged 7.2 PPG and 4.3 RPG.

HERE is a string of 17 short videos from MaxPreps showing double-double games of Poff the magic dragon, who indeed shoots from NBA range if not from Honah-Lee.

As I mentioned in another thread, she was very impressive at the U16 tryouts.

The USA won gold in the FIBA U19 games, and Paige Bueckers won MVP of the tourney and was first in the tourney in assists. On the USA team, she was first in assists, minutes, efficiency and +/-, and second in scoring and 3FG%. Her only statistical weakness was in drawing FT's, where she was 3/5 for the tourney, perhaps partly due to her ability to pass prestidigitationally in traffic rather than trying to shoot.

I was surprised at how slight of build is Bueckers.

Aside from the waiver status, isn't she still recovering from having knee surgery in June?

Yes, she is still recovering from it. And Crystal Dangerfield had hip surgery.

well Geno put the usual pedal to the metal in terms of scheduling. I always admire that aspect of UConn bball - take on all comers.

From the 2020 Commitments thread:

Davis4632 wrote:
[Piath] Gabriel is low risk, high reward player. She's can be use for height when UConn needs her, and she's not ranked high enough to "scare" higher ranked posts from coming to UConn.

That's a perceptive analysis. I hope it's true.

Here's a full game video of Piath Gabriel (#32 in white):

<iframe width="466" height="262" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8qNqIdkjoys" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Unfortunately, there's not much ranked height left in 2020 to scare away. I like 6-3 Angel Reese a real lot, but she fancies herself a guard and seems not to be interested in UConn. 6-6 Kamilla Cardosa is being recruited, I think, but she might be hard to get out of Tennessee and doesn't really impress me with scoring ability or mobility in the videos I've seen.

Vertical hopes may rest on 6-5 Amari DeBerry in 2021, who is characterized as a UConn lean by some, but who also seems rather raw and inconsistent in videos.

It's hard to find a really good (or even watchable) big in high school.
