| Not really sure what this topic is or what type of discussion it's intended to promote. However, I'll just say that Kate Hepburn was my favorite movie actress by the time I was in college in the 60's and no one has displaced her in my mind since then. Also, I was never much attracted to Streep's acting or looks and thought she was overrated in her prime. |

I file it under the broad category of "Celebrity Shade", which is a category I know very little about, am not invested in, yet often enjoy reading.

Just another demonstrable flaw of Kate's....inability to recognize a talent that overshadowed her own.
Now, Kate had her day in the sun. She was a box office icon. But think of it this way: In your head, play clips of various Hepburn movies in your mind. Listen closely to her lines. Her style, her delivery, her accent....she was never anything BUT Katherine Hepburn.
Meryl is a chameleon, who molded her persona to BE the character she needed to play. Take someone who doesn't know Meryl. Show them clips of her in things like "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Sophie's Choice", "The Iron Lady", "Silkwood", "The Bridges of Madison County", "One True Thing", "Ironweed" .... many might not recognize her characters as emanating from the same actress.
Katherine has her legacy, but Meryl's will far outlast it.

not so fast. this, in the eye - or rather, based on the age - of the perceiver. (is that a word?) their legacies are not mutually exclusive.

btw, this is what i call the distinction between an actor and a star. which is not to necessarily diminish the qualities of a star. i adore kate hepburn. i happened to catch "guess who's coming to dinner" recently (which is rarely shown on tv these days) and was wowed all over again by kate's performance, as well as that of her not-so-secret lover, spencer tracy. but my favorite hepburn flick has to be "stage door," in which she outshone her fellow ingenues (eve arden, ann miller, lucille ball, ginger rogers). "the calla lilies are in bloom again . . ." classic.
