Excellent pick and roll defense by Carzola, immediately contrasted on the same possession, by the lazy defense from Bentley.

I swear A. Thomas' shot has devolved even further. She struggles to even make a free throw.

A rare chance to work from home (and watch the ticker parade for the USNWT) and watching this game.
Some observations.
-Alyssa Thomas' constant jawing and stink face at the officials has become the most annoying thing about the WNBA. You did it. You fouled. Next play.
-Atlanta Dream is just anemic on offense; this is a very bad team with no superstar. Hayes is the most talented, but she needs help. You need to get rid of Bentley and Sykes. Coffey was a cute try, but she won't cut it.
-The Connecticut Sun will not win a WNBA championship or make the WNBA Finals with Courtney Williams/Jasmine Thomas as their backcourt. Thomas is above average as PG and Williams is a "good" player but she's too small to be effective against elite players in the playoffs. I just don't see offensive flow and physical dominance (or advantage) in the backcourt.
-Natasha Hideman getting her moment to shine and doing well! Anigwe looks good, too. Holmes is a threat off of the bench - this is a strength for the Sun, but I remain doubtful about the starters.

Should we take this as anything more than a one-game analysis, because I'd love to have Sykes on the Lynx.

It's alarming comparing Carzola and Bentley, when they're both on the court at the same time. Carzola is always competing, even when she gets scored on. Bentley, by contrast, looks so lazy.

I can't imagine why Atlanta would dump Sykes and keep Montgomery.

Atlanta should absolutely not get rid of Sykes. If anything, the player they need to get rid of is Hayes. Hayes plus a Top 4 pick should be able to net them a star, if you're trying to go all-in with a veteran team. Otherwise, that haul should also allow Atlanta to trade up in the draft.

It'd have to be a developing or projected star, because why would anybody give an already certified star for problem-child max money Hayes?

Well, if it's pre-lotto and you're feeling reeeealy lucky (since the 2-year record isn't gonna be helpful for odds)...
Getting Hayes and a top 2 in the next draft could be worth an established star, imo. Of course, riverboat gambling can bite you in the butt bigly.

Oh yeah, I read that wrong. Don't want Hayes, though.

Is this gonna be an annual thing with the Sun setting this hard?
Good to see Queen Elizabeth has found the other end of the court. It must be July!

With a superstar, this same team had the league's second best record and had a good chance at a championship...

Atlanta's poor record has nothing to do Angel. Multiple teams are missing players. This is the same Dream team that went to the ECF without Angel. Atlanta's terrible season falls on the Coach and players.
Hayes hasn't played like an all-star.
The players have become complacent.
Coach Collen's system, if that's what you want to call it, sucks.

That's a somewhat reductive interpretation of what actually happened. They earned the double-bye, primarily because of the twenty-nine games they played with McCoughtry. If Atlanta'd had to fight through two rounds of the playoffs, without McCoughtry, just to make it to the semi-finals, there's no chance they would have succeeded. Multiple teams are, indeed, missing players, and those teams are all worse than they were last year; the reason why the other teams didn't fall as far as Atlanta is because they didn't have as far to fall.
McCoughtry's absence has a lot to do with Atlanta's decline, because the Dream won games with their defense last year, and McCoughtry's defense held their scheme together. The drop off from Montgomery/Hayes/McCoughtry to Montgomery/Hayes/(insert name here) cannot be overstated. And, on offense, you had a player with the ability to get her own shot and, unlike Hayes, create for her teammates. Without McCoughtry, their margin for error on the perimeter went from better-than-average to non-existent.

I agree with this. Angel is a great release valve for the Dream. Because of her offensive abilities, defenses have to focus on her, which last year allowed Hayes to flourish. This year, Hayes has to be the release valve and nobody is really stepping up. Montgomery isn't producing like she did last year and Breland/Williams aren't being as productive either.
Angel is also one of the league's top defenders and her steals/deflections/presence in the passing lanes helped lead to more fast break opportunities/points last year.

Great point.
However, to pin Atlanta's regression mostly on Angel would be letting the Coach and players off the hook. Hayes hasn't played up to her capability, Breland is shooting 36% from the field and Bentley only 27%. At some point the players need to be held accountable. The Dream have more than enough talent to play .500 basketball. Starting the season 2-9 in unacceptable, with or without McCoughtry.
