Quote:
LONDON -- Corey Gauff still remembers watching the 2009 Australian Open final between Serena Williams and Dinara Safina.

It was early morning at their family home in Atlanta, but his young daughter was captivated by the match on the screen. Williams ultimately won in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-3, to claim her 10th Grand Slam title. "She's the GOAT," Corey remembers saying in awe.

His daughter, then 4, didn't know what "GOAT" meant, but once he explained it stood for "Greatest of All Time," her eyes got wide, and she said defiantly: "I want to be the GOAT."

Quote:
On Monday, Cori "Coco" Gauff, now 15, crouched to her knees, put her hands to her head and then stood up triumphantly, choking back tears. She had just defeated her longtime hero, Venus Williams, in straight sets -- at Wimbledon, of all places -- in her first main draw appearance at a Grand Slam, and it seemed she had just realized the weight of the moment.

Quote:
"I thought it was super special for Coco," Roger Federer said after his first-round win Tuesday. "I thought she handled it great. She wanted to be on the big court. She wanted to play against her idol. That's what good players -- that's where they shine, I'd say."

"I've known [Coco] since she was 7, so a long time," Sloane Stephens said on Tuesday after her first-round win. "[Coco] is a great young lady. I really like her. I think she is a really amazing player. Obviously, to beat Venus on a stage like that yesterday is incredible.

Quote:
Serena doubled down on her praise of Coco on Tuesday following her own first-round win.

"I don't know. I just love Coco and her family," Serena said. "They're just really sweet. Her dad is just a good guy. She's pretty awesome and pretty cool. Honestly, I feel honored that I was on her wall [as a poster] at some point in her life. Soon she'll be on other girls' walls. It's nice, because it will keep it going from the next generation to next generation."

Coco Gauff, 15, wins again at Wimbledon

Quote:
Coco Gauff, the 15-year-old who beat Venus Williams in her Wimbledon debut, advanced to the third round on Wednesday.

Gauff swept Slovak Magdaléna Rybáriková 6-3, 6-3.

Gauff, already the youngest player in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon main draw through qualifying, is now the youngest to make round three since Jennifer Capriati in 1991.

She next gets Slovenian Polona Hercog, who upset 17th seed Madison Keys in the second round.

She gets Simona Halep next, which is a big step up.

Great comeback from the brink today!

The match was burdened with half a million slices.

yeah, she has yet to face a real slugger. we'll see.

here's a five-minute highlight video, which includes her remarkable comeback in the second set.

briton jay clarke dumped fellow brit harriet dart after the tournament started, and by text message, so he could play mixed with gauff.

that's messed up. that's more messed up than anything kyrgios did.

https://www.eurosport.com/tennis/wimbledon/2019/harriet-dart-frustrated-as-mixed-doubles-partner-jay-clarke-teams-up-with-cori-gauff_sto7354036/story.shtml

young people today. they've lost/abandoned/been deprived of all social comportment.

That encompasses its own artistry, depending upon the condition of the grass....more finesse.

Brilliant young player. Cool

I thought Halep would be a little too much for her at this point. Gauff will win a slam before she's 20.

What's that, about 21 more attempts, with Williams likely gone for most?

Seems like a safe bet to me.

As illustrated by her final point in that match, the kid's got GUTS....didn't hold back, just went for winner. Cool

"It definitely feels like everything happened so quickly," said Gauff. "These two weeks have been amazing."

Quote:
Currently backed by New Balance, Head and pasta maker Barilla, phones have been "ringing off the hook" at her management company Team 8.

But powerhouse agent Tony Godsick says they won't be rushing into deals.

"A lot of the sponsor inquiries are from companies that want to be part of this quick success and we are only looking for long-term partners," Godsick, who founded Team 8 with longtime client Roger Federer, told CNN.

"Once the event is over we will sort through the opportunities and come up with a strategic plan that makes sense for where she is in her development.

Quote:
Age eligibility restrictions created by the WTA to help prevent burnout — Capriati, for one, struggled to deal with her new found fame — mean Gauff can only participate in seven more professional events prior to her 16th birthday next March.

"Even if the restrictions weren't there, I still think I wouldn't play as much as the older players do, just because I'm still trying to develop my game and I'm still trying to train," she said. "I feel like I would obviously play more than the rules state, but I think I wouldn't try to overdo it because I'm still 15."

Quote:
"I learned a lot," she said, summing up her Wimbledon experience. "I learned how to play in front of a big crowd. I learned what it was like to be under pressure. I learned a lot and I'm really thankful for this experience."

And Venus on grass is still pretty good -- and much more of a threat than Venus on clay (and likely hardcourts) these days.

Gauff has a similar build to Venus. She is not nearly as tall -- Gauff is just under 5-9.5, whereas Venus is 6-1. But they both have very long legs, shorter torsos, and longer arms (so their respective wingspans are bigger than their respective heights) that provide for great reach at the net.

But Gauff's serve appears to be more technically sound than Venus's serve. She is close to Serena than Venus in that regard, as Serena Williams has arguably the best and most technically sound serve in the history of women's tennis.
