Quote:
H. Ross Perot, the colorful, self-made Texas billionaire who rose from a childhood of Depression-era poverty and twice ran for president as a third-party candidate, has died. He was 89.

From the article:
-- Perot's 19% of the vote in 1992 stands among the best showings by an independent candidate in the past century.
-- Some Republicans blamed him for Bush's loss to Clinton as Perot garnered the largest percentage of votes for a third-party candidate since former President Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 bid.

But what I also remember was his speech, where, in discussing inner-city crime and drug use to a Black audience, Perot on several occasions used the expression "you people" or "your people" to describe the offenders and the victims.

This, IMHO, severely hurt his (perceived) chances at winning the White House...or at least winning a few states.

A feisty bantam with a grassroots, common sense, straight-shootin, straight-talkin, down-to-earth, business-like approach to life and politics. If he had been president instead of Clinton for eight years, this country would have been much better off for decades, especially economically but also morally, and the 2016 election would have had a much different and less polarizing cast of characters.

Here he is in 1992 railing at the economic stupidity of tax laws, government regulations and immoral lobbying that will continue to drive U.S. companies off shore, and the destructive potential of one-sided trade deals such as NAFTA.

Ross Perot donated to Trump’s re-election campaign before death: report

Quote:
Like Trump, Perot ran as a billionaire populist against the Republican establishment. His focus on the North American Free Trade Agreement — rather than the national debt — and his use of cable news for laying out his agenda were both familiar elements of Trump’s campaign.

As Democratic strategist James Carville put it in a 2016 podcast: “If Donald Trump is the of Jesus of the disenchanted, displaced non-college white voter, then Perot was the John the Baptist of that sort of movement.”
