By this lineup, I assume WNBA 09 means that Glory Johnson is the starter, but if she is a DNP, Aerial Powers will take her place. That is fine...barely. According to the rules, Glory is considered to be playing until 2 1/2 hours after her game begins. She doesn't officially receive her DNP until then.

Glory's game begins at 8 PM on Friday. Aerial's game begins at 10:30 PM. Because of this, the substitution is allowed. If Aerial's game was one of the 10 PM starts, the substitution would not be legal.

The rules will updated to clarify this, and a few other things.

This is the latest version of the rules. The above situation mentioned for WNBA 09 is addressed. The question regarding Stephanie Talbot's availability is also clarified.

I changed the time limit on the new rule about announcing position changes from 1 hour before game time to 24 hours before game time. I could easily see someone springing a surprise exactly one hour before during the playoffs, and it deciding a game. No way. 24 hours.

I also added a rule that specifically states that reporting out of position players are handled as with scoring errors. The rules never actually said that before. It shouldn't ever be an issue in the future, because the illegal lineups should be flagged by my software now. Just in case they're not, it's covered.

Changes since the Previous Rules are shown in blue

----------------------------------

OFFICIAL LEAGUE RULES (as of 7/4/19)

Scoring

Each starting player will score points for their team using the NBA's official fantasy scoring system:

Points: 1
Rebounds: 1.2
Assists: 1.5
Steals: 3
Blocks: 3
Turnovers: -1

If a player plays in more than one WNBA game during a week, only the first game is used to determine fantasy points for that week. A game in which the player does not play (DNP) does not count as the player's first game of the week.

Most weeks begin on Monday and end on Sunday. The exception is around the All-Star Break: Week 10 ends on Tuesday, July 30, and Week 11 begins on Wednesday, July 31 (transactions this week are refreshed at 6 PM EDT Wednesday instead of Monday).

Lineups

Each week, a team will field a starting lineup of 5 players, consisting of 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center.

At the start of the week, teams should post their lineup. If they don't, the lineup from the previous week will be used.

Lineups can be changed at any time during the week, provided that it is done before the start time of the first game of the player(s) being replaced. The replacement player must be yet to play her first game of the week.

If a non-rostered player is used in a lineup, or a player out of position is used, it is treated as if the lineup slot is empty. Any legal player who hasn't played her first game can be inserted into that lineup slot. Empty lineup slots earn 0.0 points for the week.

Season

There will be 12 weeks of regular season play, and then most of the teams will participate in a 4 week playoff format. The regular season schedule can be found on page 17.

Playoffs

7 teams will qualify for the playoffs, and will be seeded according to record and tiebreakers. The #1 seed will receive 3 byes and will play in the Championship Game. The #2 through #4 seeds will receive 1 bye and a berth in the second round. The #5 through #7 seeds will participate in a 3-way contest where the highest scoring team advances to the second round.

In the instance of a tie, the higher ranked seed advances.

Week 13, Round 1: #5 vs. #6 vs. #7 (all three compete, high score advances)
Week 14, Round 2a: #2 vs. winner of Round 1
Week 14, Round 2b: #3 vs. #4
Week 15, Round 3: winners of Rounds 2a and 2b
Week 16, Championship: #1 vs. winner of Round 3

Rosters and Transactions

Roster size is 10 WNBA players. Teams may modify their rosters with trades and add/drops, subject to the following restrictions:

From Weeks 1 through 8, a maximum of 3 players can be added to a team each week. No more than 2 of them can come from add/drop, and no more than 2 of them can come from trades.

After Week 8, no more trades can be made. Teams are still permitted to make 2 add/drops each week.

During the playoffs, no transactions are allowed, unless a team has a player who is cut or goes on the WNBA disabled list leaving the team with no legal starting lineup. In that instance, the cut or injured player can be dropped for a substitute.

Weeks begin and transactions are refreshed every Monday at 6 PM EDT (GMT - 4) (this time is subject to change if everyone agrees).

After the draft and before the regular season starts, there are no limitations on add/drop. Teams can only add 2 players by trade during this period.

A player in a team's starting lineup cannot be traded or dropped while she is currently playing in a game earning points for her team. "Currently playing" is defined as the period beginning at game time and ending 2 and 1/2 hours after game time.

A player in a team's starting lineup cannot be traded, dropped or substituted for while she is currently playing in a game. "Currently playing" is defined as the period beginning at game time and ending 2 and 1/2 hours after game time. A player who is about to receive a DNP is considered to be currently playing and cannot be removed for a substitute until the 2 1/2 hour period has elapsed. In other words, if a DNP's game begins at 8 PM, a player whose game begins at 10:30 PM could be subbed, but a player whose game begins at 10 PM could not.

Usually add/drop is first come, first serve. However, there are two instances where a waiting period is necessary:

1) When a player is dropped from another player's roster, all teams have 24 hours to put in a claim for the player. If more than one team claims the player, the team with the worst record gets the player. Resolve ties using the tiebreaker procedure. Add/drops done in this way take place after the 24 hour waiting period for purposes of weekly transaction limits and waiver wire priority.

2) When a team is out of add/drops, it can not make another one until its transactions are refreshed at 6 PM EDT on Monday. However, the team may put in a claim for the player in advance so that it is awarded the player immediately at 6 PM. If more than one player does this, once again, it is resolved by record and tiebreakers.

When a trade is made, a team may call for a veto by posting here no more than 24 hours after the trade. After this post, teams (except for the teams involved in the trade) have until it's 48 hours after the trade to either confirm the veto, or uphold the trade. If anyone votes to uphold the trade, the trade stands. If not, and there are at least 5 who voted for the veto, the trade will be voided.

Players involved in the trade up for veto may play for their new teams while the veto is being resolved.

You may not trade for a "player to be named later."

If a team makes a 2 for 1 trade where it receives the 2 players, the team must immediately drop a surplus player from its roster as part of the trade announcement.

Tiebreakers

Tiebreakers are used to determine playoff seeding and add/drop claims when two or more teams have the same record.

The tiebreakers that will be used are:

1: Head to Head (playoff seeding only, see below)
2: Points Scored
3: Random die roll

Head to Head is the combined record one has against the players in the tiebreaker.

With more than 2 players involved in the tiebreaker, if during any step where 2 or more (but not all) players tie for best (or worst if it's an add/drop claim), take those players and repeat the entire tiebreaking sequence with just them.

For playoff seeding, tiebreakers are resolved one at a time, highest seed first.

For add/drop claims, do not include wins, losses or points from the current week. At the start of the season, or in the unlikely event that two teams have the same record and points scored, the priority on the waiver wire will be determined randomly and announced at the start of the week.

Player Positions

Players are eligible to play the position at which they are listed on the team roster page on the WNBA website. If a player is listed at two positions, she is eligible to play either position. If the position is updated on the WNBA website roster, her fantasy availability is modified as well. Such position changes to a rostered player are not effective for league purposes until 24 hours after the roster update is noticed and reported here in the league thread.

To find the roster pages mentioned above, go to WNBA.com. Click on "Teams," which is the first option on the top left. Select the WNBA team whose roster you would like to view. You will be taken to that team's webpage. On it, there will be another menu on top. Select the "Team" menu, and then there will be a dropdown where you select "Roster." That will take you to the official roster page used in this fantasy league.

If a player is not listed on the WNBA Team Roster page, use the information found on her player page on the site. Again, go to WNBA.com. This time click on the "Players" menu, and you can go to the page of the player in question.

Scoring Errors

Scoring errors can occur when statistics are entered incorrectly, or when the WNBA changes official statistics.

Errors during the regular season (with the exception of the final week) may be reported any time before the end of the following week. In other words, an error in Week 1 must be reported by the end of Week 2. If so the correction will take effect retroactively.

In the post season (or the final week of the regular season), errors must be reported before the end of the current week.

The reporting time limits for scoring errors also apply for reporting out of position players.

Is Talbot eligible to start this week? We picked Talbot up after her first WNBA game of the week. The reason I ask is because RFBL rules state:

"If a player plays in more than one game during a week, only the first game is used to determine fantasy points for that week. A game in which the player does not play (DNP) does not count as the player's first game of the week."

The rules do not distinguish the difference of a player being/not being RFBL rostered at the time of her first (WNBA?, Euroleague?, RFBL?) game of the week.

We will be starting Talbot if eligible in place of TRP.

Talbot is not eligible to start this week. It's her first WNBA game of the week that counts. It doesn't matter whose roster she's on.

Thank you for efficiently addressing this in the rules

A reminder to adamj95 that Damiras Dantas did not play in Minnesota's first game this week due to injury. I don't know if she's playing tomorrow, but if not, you may wish to sub.

There are 3 WNBA games of interest tonight: Indiana (at Dallas, 8 PM), Phoenix (vs New York, 10 PM), and Washington (at Las Vegas, 10:30 PM) all play their first game of the week.

None of the RFBL games will be finished tonight. Connecticut and Los Angeles still have to play, and every game features at least one player from those teams.

She’s out indefinitely.

No. Hamby already played, as did Lavender. But you can put in Chiney Ogumwike.

You could wait to see if Dantas plays tomorrow, and then sub in Chiney (or give a lineup that specifies that in the same way WNBA 09 did with Glory Johnson/Aerial Powers tonight).

I think you have to go by the half game results. Isn’t that what FanDuel does?

LV already played its first game of the week on Tuesday so those players points are already calculated and Washington has another game on Sunday, since that will be the first full game the Washington players will be in I would assume that Sunday's games points is what would count for the Washington players.

I appreciate your input J-Spoon, especially since this issue does not affect your game at all, but how would you have handled it if Washington had no second game?

So that everyone knows, in my game against Erimus, we each have one player going for Washington: Erimus has Tianna Hawkins and I have Ariel Atkins. Both earned nearly identical points in the first half (Atkins 11.4, Hawkins 10.6). Atkins averages about 6 fantasy points more a game (24.2-18.1).

Based on averages, it seems like it would be a little bit better point expectation-wise for me to adopt J-Spoon's idea and have a redo on Sunday. But only barely. And that's not the way I'm ruling anyway.

There are several games for which this decision is very important. For that reason, and because I don't think any one way is more fair than the other, I am going to try to go with what I think the rules say.

The rules say "first game." They don't say "first full game." The stats are recorded, and in the box score. None of the players received a DNP. I think we have to say that this is the Washington players' first game of the week for league purposes.

I don't know when tonight's game is being finished, if at all, but I think the league rules for reporting scoring errors should apply here, even though they were not specifically designed for this. If the suspended game is completed by the end of next week, the extra points count and will be added, but if not, only tonight's points count. Like with scoring errors, eventually you have to let a win be a win and a loss be a loss.

When I looked at the schedule and saw the second game this week it seemed like an easy out. If there wasn't a second game IDK what I would have done.

Sadly, yes. That game is still the first game of the week. I can't read the rules any other way. If there were no game tomorrow, we would certainly say that the first game was official and count what points we could for our Washington players.

According to the rules, the only way a player's second game can count is if a player receives a DNP in the box score. Otherwise, it's got to count. There are so many ways a player can receive a half's worth of stats. Injuries. Foul Trouble. Benching. Earthquakes. Only a DNP allows a second game to be used.

If a baseball game goes halfway and is rain-shortened (or earthquake shortened), the stats go in the books, and for fantasy baseball players, they're left with a situation like us with our Mystics: half a game's worth of stats.

I honestly didn't think about this when I wrote the rules, but even if I did, I probably would have handled it the same way. I don't like taking already scored points off the board. If Arial Atkins had somehow scored 30+ fantasy points for me in the first half, I would have been running around my apartment in joy over her amazing performance. To have that experience rendered meaningless is not to my liking.

What happened here is not to my liking either, but sometimes, for whatever reason, you've got to take a partial score for one or more of your players. Unfortunately, this is going to have to be one of those times for league members who started Mystic players this week.

I'm caught up on my WNBA watching, so I was finally able to look at the box scores and enter in the stats. And as a player/commissioner, the worst possible thing happened: the ruling I made on the suspended Washington game gave me the win instead of Erimus.

At least none of the other games were affected. But really, I should have asked everyone if they agreed that the ruling should be applied to my game as well. The reason I didn't was, as I said at the time, I thought I was ruling against my own interests. Before the game, Ariel Atkins was averaging 6 points a game more than Tianna Hawkins. She only outpointed Hawkins by 1 in the first half of the suspended game, so I thought a total reset would be (narrowly) better for my team.

I am pretty certain that if people thought my ruling was compromised by my own game situation, they would have said so with or without my solicitation. But I should have asked.

It was a tough decision that did not appear to be made in favor of any one team. None of us had a better idea.
