It's jarring to think that the #6, #12. and #13 teams in the world have already been eliminated from the Olympics.

For Women's Soccer, the #4 Team in the World, France, will not be at Tokyo 2020 after losing to the United States. Europe will be represented by England, Sweden, and Netherlands. Traditional threats to the United States such as Germany will not be present.

It'll actually be the Great Britain women's national football team. It'll be mostly players from England, but likely a few from Scotland & Wales, too. They did the same thing in 2012 when London hosted the Olympics.

Temi Fagbenle and Karlie Samuelson combine for 57 points as Team GB steamrolls a Montenegro team that upset the Czech Republic.

So Leedham out-rebounded Glory Johnson. That's pretty cool.
boxscore
(13 pts, 7 assists, 4 steals also useful)

It's fair to say that there are worse ways I could've spent the train ride to Lyon than watching most of GB-Montenegro. Love this team. They've been playing some great stuff, and they're one win away from something that seemed like an absolute pipe dream not long ago.

It was pretty tough for Belgium and Russia.

What’s been going on with Johannes? Has Hartley been keeping her on the bench? Hard to imagine.

This Messymon on Belgium is some player. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of her before.

So they said that if Belgium loses they play for a top 6? Top 6 in what? Announcer started to say they qualify for something I thought? Not the Olympics right?

The calls on both Meesseman (sp) and Hartley were awful.

Meesseman fouls out and France (thanks to huge game by Gruda) wins in OT.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen such bad foul shooting down the stretch of any game.

These refs never heard about the verticality rule. 2 fouls on Meesseman were BS. She was straight up in her own cilinder and with the last one got an elbow in her face.

But yeah belgium gave this away in the end by horrible ft shooting and a very dumb defensive mistake from Kim mestdagh who left open the shooter in the corner and that resulted in a scramble and offensive rebound and game tying 3pointer from zhartley

yeah, Richyyy or Awhom said it was Olympic qualifiers. Top six make it.

The comically complicated FIBA system for 2019-2022 is here - http://www.fiba.basketball/womens-calendar-timeline-2019-2022 . Europe get 6 into the qualifying tournaments, along with 2 African, 4 Americas and 4 Asian. Those other regions have pre-qualifying tournaments to decide their teams, but we're using EuroBasket. So the two games in the losers bracket on Saturday morning are essentially playoffs for entry into the Olympic qualifiers.

It's also why I felt like our best chance was today. Beating Hungary in the quarters always seemed more viable than beating Belgium/France in the later game.

Still smiling.

One of the Olympic qualifiers is at the half, with Sweden leading Russia by 1. Zahui B has played pretty well, but I think Russia may have too much size inside for the Swedes to handle. ESPN+ has the game.

Zahui B in foul trouble this game, but it's been close. Low scoring game and not all that fun to watch. Neither team will go far at the Olympics.
