Tom and Lorenzo, famed Philly bloggers, rank the best and worst of Pride products | Opinion
Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
June 19, 2019

Quote:
It may seem like a frivolous thing to waste time worrying over when there are always more pressing concerns, but every June, the corporate branding of Pride, once the most marginalized of events put on by and for some of the most marginalized people in society, becomes more prevalent and potent. This year, it feels as if just about every brand and product added a rainbow to its labeling and called itself a queer ally. But is the rainbow enough? Shouldn’t we expect more?

Quote:
We’ve struggled with these question ourselves, with Tom coming down on the “We need more than a rainbow” side of the argument and Lorenzo coming down on the “Look how far we’ve come” side. It’s a complicated issue and there’s no real consensus in the LGBTQ community about it.

Janelle Monáe (Paper Magazine)

On supporting the community:

Quote:
“I look to Indya Moore, Mj Rodriquez, Janet Mock (my Pose family)…Laverne Cox, those women are putting themselves and their lives on the frontline everyday. When their trans sisters and brothers get murdered, they feel it. We have to support them…It’s just a responsibility I feel. I could do better. I’ll do better.”

On coming out:

Quote:
“We have to make sure that we don’t pressure people to come out. Everybody doesn’t have the same set of circumstances. There are people, young people in particular, that will be cut off from their family, hanged or jailed if they walked in their truth. Folks who are not comfortable speaking out about your sexuality publicly, we see you and you are valid and you matter.”

A Frontline of Diners and Donuts: The Pre-Stonewall Riots
Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez

Quote:
These events were born out of a rising sense of righteousness and anger on the part of queer people as the increasingly politicized and liberal-tilted decade of the 1960s progressed and the shackles of post-War, McCarthyism-inflected conformity were rattled and in some cases thrown off by the disenfranchised and non-conformist members of society.

So proud of Lil Nas X. IMO, he was already one of the best stories in music this year but this is on another level. He is a true definition of authenticity to be himself at only 20 years old in a music genre with a homophobic fanbase in which he is experiencing mainstream success right now. His parents should be proud of the job they've done.

True say
I want and I need
To let go
Use my time to be free
It's like it's always what you like
It's always what you like
Why it's always what you like?
It's always what you like, huh

Ain't no more actin', man that forecast say I should just let me grow
No more red light for me, baby, only green, I gotta go
Pack my past up in the back, oh, let my future take a hold
This is what I gotta do, can't be regretting when I'm old

Brand new places I'll choose and I'll go, I know
Embracing this news I behold unfolding
I know, I know, I know it don't feel like it's time
But I look back at this moment, I'll see that I'm fine
I know, I know, I know it don't feel like it's time
I set boundaries for myself, it's time to cross the line

True say
I want and I need
To let go
Use my time to be free
It's like it's always what you like
It's always what you like
Why it's always what you like?
It's always what you like, huh

Ain't no more actin', man that forecast say I should just let me grow
No more red light for me, baby, only green, I gotta go
Pack my past up in the back, oh, let my future take a hold
This is what I gotta do, can't be regretting when I'm old

He's totally in a category all of his own. If a chart-topping male rapper coming out isn't ground-breaking enough, and breaking down the hiphop-country genre barrier as well still isn't ground-breaking enough, he has also managed to cross over from human appeal to canine appeal
