Are we really going to blame USWNT players for scoring, celebrating goals?
Graham Hays (ESPN)

Quote:
But to put blame on the United States ignores two obvious points. First, the Americans didn't make the rules under which the number of goals scored is part of deciding the outcome of the tournament. Goal differential counts. The U.S. women want to win its group. Unlike just about any other sport, the Americans have a vested interest in running up the score.

And second, it isn't the United States' fault it can't clear its bench. It is allowed three subs. It used three subs.

This would never be talked about in a men's tournament.

Germany might not be scoring all that much, but it's enough to get out of the group. And Sara Daebritz with the game winner? Yes, please. My favorite German player! Goal wasn't beautiful, but it doesn't have to be!

Over the first weekend of World Cup play — before the U.S. even kicked off — Fox Sports recorded a 79% rise in viewers compared to the first two match days of the 2011 World Cup and an 11% rise compared to the 2015 tournament, despite the less favorable time zone for American fans this time around. Views of online Women’s World Cup streaming content has seen a spike of 310% compared to 2015.

TODAY (June 17, 2019)
GROUP A
Norway 2 - South Korea 1
France 1 - Nigeria 0

France & Norway both qualify for knockout round, Nigeria waits

France was gifted a do over on a PK which is stirring some controversy. The Nigeria GK was ruled for stepping out of her box when the first PK was attempted, but for the second PK, several French players entered the penalty area before the PK was attempted a no call was made. Should have ended in a 0-0 draw and would have seen Nigeria through to the knockouts.

TODAY (June 18, 2019)
GROUP C
Brazil 1 - Italy 0
Australia 4 - Jamaica 1

Sam Kerr (AUS) had four goals in the win over Jamaica. For Brazil, Marta scored her 17th World Cup goal, moving her ahead of Germany's Miroslav Klose to become the outright top scorer in both the men's and women's game. She is also the only player to score at five different World Cups.

Italy, Brazil, and Australia all finish with 2-1 records in Group C and advance to the Round of 16.

Today
GROUP D
England 2 - 0
Scotland 3 - Argentina 3

England and Japan advance to knockout round

Scotland blew a 3-0 lead which would have advanced them. Argentina was awarded a last second PK to tie it. This draw almost locks in Nigeria to the knockouts. Tomorrow is the last day of group play. Argentina can still advance IF the Cameroon/New Zealand match AND the Chile/Scotland match end in draws.

The Netherlands and Canada advance to the Round of 16 (with the Netherlands winning Group E and Canada finishing second).

As for Cameroon...Ajara Nchout scores with the LAST KICK of the game and sends Cameroon to the knockout stage!

Beautiful story. It's really a shame how a lot of women's teams are forced to not play due to lack of funding from their federations. On another bright side, Jamaica's World Cup appearance has sparked interest in several Caribbean nations getting more funding for their women's teams.

June 23
England 3 - Cameroon 0
France 2- Brazil 1 (a.e.t.)

The ENG-CMR game was a mess. Poor officiating, letting Cameroon get way too physical. Two bad VAR calls. The Cameroon players protesting during halftime. A Cameroon player shoved an official during the match. It was an ugly match and a bad example of the women's game.

OTOH, The FRA-BRA match was the best of the tournament. Game was tied 1-1 after regulation. Both teams wanted this win so badly. Sad to see Marta never have the success at the World Cup level. A shame the Brazilian federation never fully backed the team.

Goal! USA 2, Spain 1.

Megan Rapinoe (USA) converts the penalty with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner.

That's game! USA will advance to play France in the quarterfinals. Game is Friday at 3pm EST on FOX. USA got to work on setting up plays better. I don't think they'll luck out and get two PKs to win. Plus France has that home field advantage and have looked very good in this World Cup.
