And there's some weird point system that determines who makes the Olympic team -- which will not be filled by those who are cut from the National Team.
The fact that Ionescu is on track for the Olympics in 3x3 is one reason she returned to Oregon. If she stays healthy, as I understand it, she's pretty much guaranteed a spot due to her prior participation and success.

Ionescu wins it for Oregon with a walk-off free throw. I wonder if USA Basketball will send the team as is to the Pan American Games or if they ask them to replace Giomi or Gildon or both. I suppose the Sabally sisters are American citizens by virtue of being born here so Oregon could theoretically field one, but USA Basketball would probably not be amused even if it's within the rules. It will be interesting to see what teams play in the upcoming Red Bull events this summer. |

this is true. i don't believe the people who pick the teams realize that you need a specific skill set to excel. Shots made outside the 3pt lone count twice as much as those inside the line. There are only 3 to a side so quickness on both offense and defense are at a premium. Collier was a really bad choice. She just did not have the footspeed or height to dominate either on offense or defense. She was the weak link of this team. She not only had trouble scoring but was a real liability on the defensive end.

The u.S swept the U18 3x3 contest.
http://www.fiba.basketball/3x3u18wc/2019/news/usa-complete-unprecedented-double-at-fiba-3x3-u18-world-cup
First EVER win for the US men in any 3x3 FIBA competition and first ever sweep by a nation
2020 Hailey Van Lilth was the MVP and 2019 teammate Rickea Jackson was also named to 3 person team. 2020 Olivia Cochran was 3rd in tourney scoring (Jackson was 4th, Van Lith 5th). Madison Hayes was 4th member of US contingent.
The men's team had this kid out of Minnesota, Dawson Garcia, who is 6 foot 10 and Is a good looking player. A solid looking stretch four for some team. Incredible footwork especially as a perimeter defender.

Rain? So they play outside?
Now there's a big-time event. I wonder if they have metal nets.

Yes, 3x3 is supposed to be played outside. The United States seems to be the only country obsessed with playing it indoors. The last championships in Las Vegas were played outdoors, although they insisted on using an indoor floor instead of the special surface the big international tournaments use.
I will be interested in seeing how the upcoming Red Bull 3x3 tour is handled as they start play in Detroit on Saturday. They are supposed to be in Oakland at Soldiertown for one of their stops on August 3rd. |

The Fiba games are always played outdoors. It's part of the game.
You should try watching it with an open mind sometime. You might enjoy it if you give it a chance.
Sounds similar to the people who trash women's basketball without ever actually watching it.
It's a different game. Doesn't mean it's not a good game.

I love 3-on-3 ... but when I asked Sabrina Ionescu about it, she said that a lot of the outdoor courts (which are like SportCourts) are covered so you can play when it rains.
That would seem to make sense for international events, really.
(And I think playing 3-on-3 is one of the best ways to develop young players because it a) forces everyone to handle the ball and defend, and b) it negates the advantage of speed that can be a major factor in fullcourt games.)
