Two rounds of cuts have been made so we are down to 68:

The U16 tryouts are a kind of debut for the next generation of players, as even though they've been on the club circuit and faced each other before, the stakes are much higher and the overall level of competition is a huge step up from high school or AAU play.

Standouts (to me) so far:

Janiah Barker, 6-3 2022 PF from Tampa Bay Tech
Sania Feagin, 6-4 2021 F from Forest Park HS in Georgia
Timea Gardiner, 6-3 2022 PF from Fremont HS in Utah
Londynn Jones, 5-6 2022 PG from Santiago HS in SoCal
Caroline Lau, 5-72022 PG from St. Luke's School in Connecticut
Olivia Miles, 5-10 2021 PG from Blair Academy in New Jersey
Saylor Poffenbarger, 6-2 2021 W from Middletown HS in Maryland
Samantha Wagner, 6-1 2023 W from Bush HS in Texas

Feagin and Miles are probably the most impressive up to this point.

That's weird.

Their cut down to 18 at least made it so that they would list all the remaining players in the article so here they are:

Four surprises (to me, at least) who didn't make it:

Ysabella Fontleroy, 2022 Kickapoo HS MO
Destiny Adams, 2021 Manchester Township HS NJ
Samantha Wagner, 2023, Bush HS Texas
Grace Van Slooten 2022 Notre Dame Academy OH

The only invitee who didn't make it to the Sunday sessions was Aaronette Vonleh from Oregon, though she missed one Saturday session with an injury. And one girl who I mentioned before, Caroline Lau of Massachusetts, did not make it to Sunday either.

Non-invitees who made the final 18:

Lauren Betts, 2022 Grandview CO (6-7)
Londynn Jones, 2022 Santiago HS CA

Size matters: 18 of the final 42 (42.9%) were 6-3 or taller.

Clay, I don't generally follow the high school scene that closely but looking at the list it seemed like California was underrepresented in these lists. Is it that California's prospects are not as good in this crop or something else in terms of how the players were chosen to attend the tryouts.

Good question ... for whatever reason, not many Cali kids came to the tryouts (aside from the 35 invitees, anyone can sign up if they do so quickly enough).

But California is also on a down cycle, talent-wise. Last year was not a great one for high school teams and players, and this coming season looks to be less impressive.

Georgia's up, though ...

Well the game against Mexico will now be played on Wednesday because Mexico had travel issues and could not make it in time even though they tried pushing the tip back.

The game against El Salvador at 3:30pm ET on Monday can be seen here:

El Salvador lost to hosts Chile 63-46:

In the other group, Canada beat Ecuador 79-33 and Brazil beat Puerto Rico 62-57:

Their game against Chile is at 8:15pm ET on Tuesday and can be seen here:

http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/1706/Mexico-Chile#tab=boxscore

Puerto Rico beat Ecuador 52-39 and Canada will probably cruise right to the final themselves after beating Brazil 78-39:

The United States rolled again, this time past Chile 109-44:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/1806/USA-Chile#tab=boxscore

The rescheduled game against Mexico can be seen here at 6pm ET on Wednesday:

Mexico beat hapless El Salvador 73-25:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/1806/Mexico-El-Salvador#tab=boxscore

In the other group, Ecuador used a fast start to beat Brazil 71-55 and Canada beat Puerto Rico to take the top spot, but a 83-40 margin was still enough for Puerto Rico to sit atop the tiebreaker:

They beat Brazil 107-32 to qualify:

Their semifinal is the 6pm ET one on Friday with the link not up yet.

Canada stifled El Salvador 61-15 to open the day, Puerto Rico just edged Mexico 50-48, and Chile used the home fans to come back and beat Ecuador 56-43:

103-30 over Puerto Rico:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/2106/Puerto-Rico-USA#tab=boxscore

Canada had been pretty dominant on the other side of the bracket, but only beat Chile 50-38 so the final (8:15pm ET Saturday) might be pretty lopsided:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/2106/Canada-Chile#tab=boxscore

In the consolation bracket, Brazil beat Mexico 49-39 and Ecuador beat El Salvador 59-26:

6'7", 15 year old Lauren Betts, high school class of 2022, could be a superstar in the making. She dominated the team in efficiency, rebounding and blocks, tied for the team lead in FG%, and was third in scoring.

http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/team/USA

6'1" guard Peyton Verhulst, who was USA high scorer, won the tourney MVP.

Betts was OK in the tryouts, but 6-7 is 6-7. There was some discussion as to whether she'd even make the team, but the consensus was that she would because, well, she's 6-7.

And if she was playing against players four inches shorter (or more) who couldn't push her around, she would absolutely dominate. She did not dominate against the other bigs at the tryouts, though she did show some skill.
