THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE, a new film from award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, tells the story of the five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park in 1989. The film chronicles The Central Park Jogger case, for the first time from the perspective of these five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.

I grew up with and personally knew four of the five. This story rocked and devastated our community and neighborhood. I knew their mothers and their sisters were my some of my best friends.

I will be watching...I heard the doc was good.

What saddens me the most is that even after all this time and dna evidence, the victim still will not acknowledge that this young men are innocent. I mean their records were expunged, but they lost their childhood forever.

Parents, please teach your children...especiall y mothers with young black/latino boys to answer no questions, if every they are accused and detained without you present.

Know your rights and teach them their legal rights as a citizen. These types of cases are not random and happen til this day.

A petition urges Columbia Law School to fire adjunct faculty member Elizabeth Lederer, the assistant district attorney in the infamous Central Park Jogger case—a case in which a young white woman was brutally beaten and raped and five black and Latino teenagers were wrongfully convicted of the crime. They spent years in prison before the real perpetrator confessed and their sentences were vacated.

The petition mentions issues that are brought up in the Ken Burns Central Park Five PBS documentary, which notes that the DNA evidence at the scene of the crime did not match any of the boys and that the confessions from the teens were forced by the detectives interrogating them.

The petition goes on:

Today, Lederer is still an assistant District Attorney in New York, and she also teaches at Columbia Law School. No individual who is responsible for locking up innocent boys for years should ever step foot in a classroom to teach students. Ever.

A review commissioned by the New York City Police Department found that the officers involved in the case did nothing wrong in the investigation and interrogation of the Central Park Five. The five young men have filed a multi-million dollar civil suit against the city. That suit is still 10 years old and still pending.

Is it problematic for an assistant district attorney who worked on a controversial trial to be teaching law students?

There was a protest over the weekend, seeking reparations for the CP5. I don't know how you put a dollar amount on what was done to these guys, but whatever that number is, it should be very high.
