I like what the Twin's AAA team posted on their Facebook page when someone asked when "Straight Pride" night was, in response to their advertising their "Pride Night".
They noted that no one was on their page asking when "Hearing capable" night was on their post about "Deaf Appreciation Night" or when "Men in Sports" night was for their "Women in Sports".
When the world is structured in such a way that every day messages reinforce that it is okay to be straight the idea that you need to have a parade to reinforce that is just as ludicrous as needing to reinforce that it is a good thing to be able to hear or that male sports are popular. And since it is ludicrous, we know that the people marching are not doing it to bring themselves up, but rather to bring others down.
It isn't their personal place in the world that is threatened, but rather their worldview that heterosexuality is the only acceptable behavior and that everything else is a moral perversion that is destroying society (or, in other words: homophobia).

Stormé DeLarverie and the Mythology of Stonewall
Quote: |
In the end, it doesn’t really matter if Stormé punched a cop at Stonewall. It doesn’t matter if anyone did. What matters is what we know happened and then what we know happened afterwards. Queer people rose up in the face of social genocide and from that rising up discovered a sense of identity and purpose for themselves. It’s okay for us to have myths and legends. No one wanted to record our history so we’re allowed to make up one that pleases us or raises us up. Stormé DeLarverie was a legendary entertainer, a smoothly charismatic figure, a firebrand, a rebel, a sister, a father figure, a fighter and a protector. As she says best in her own words, she was “a survivor who helped other people survive.” THAT is why she’s a legend. She was the very best of us. |

9 queer comics that go beyond pride
Oliver Sava and Caitlin Rosberg (AV Club)
Quote: |
Pride month is all about celebrating the queer experience and showing the world that there’s no shame in loving who you love, but being queer isn’t always glitter and rainbows. Sometimes it’s tears and secrets and a seemingly never-ending stream of challenges. Over the years, comic creators have shown an eagerness to explore these different facets of queerness in their work, whether they’re telling grounded autobiographical stories or heightened genre tales. There’s a wide world of queer comics to explore, and these 9 picks offer strong starting points that approach LGBTQ+ content from different angles. |

Fantastic. Just put several on hold at the library.
I am trying to read only queer books for the month of June.

I don't know how interested you are in queer theory, or if you have ever read her works before, but I highly recommend the works of Gloria E. Anzaldúa, especially Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. It is especially timely right now as it melds topics of immigration, feminism, and sexuality.

My oldest came out when she was about 19. We always loved and always will. have seen some of the struggles she has faced, and although it appears to have gotten a bit easier over the last 15 years or so, very far to go
Last year she and her partner got married. My wife and I walked her down the aisle together.
Was one of the most special moments of my life.
Sadly, some people would not attend because she is gay, including non-immediate family. |

There's no "Straight Pride", for the same reason we don't have soup kitchens for the rich

Billy Porter Opens Up to Esquire on “Pose,” His 30-Year Career, and Creating LGBTQ History
On the empowerment that bloomed from his isolation:
Quote: |
“I was able to extract myself from that toxic energy without fear, without guilt. I wish that more young people … I’m not saying go through abuse. I’m just saying that I wish more young people could get to the space of I don’t need your tolerance, I don’t need your acceptance. What I demand is your respect for my humanity.” |
On gender clothing norms:
Quote: |
“If you’re a woman wearing pants, you’re inside of the standard, and that’s cool. But if a man decides to put on female clothes, it’s disgusting. So what are we saying? Once again, male is better and female is disgusting. And I’m not having any of that anymore. I’m done! My masculinity is in question because masculinity is better? F**k that, it ain’t.” |

Some U.S. embassies still hoisting rainbow flags, despite advisory from Washington
Quote: |
Since the State Department began rejecting all embassy requests to hoist rainbow flags outside the mission buildings during LGBTQ Pride Month this year, some U.S. diplomats have been finding ways to defy, or at least get around, the new policy.
The facades of the U.S. missions in Seoul and Chennai, India, are partially hidden behind large rainbow flags, while the embassy in New Delhi is aglow in rainbow colored lights. The website for the embassy in Santiago, Chile, shows a video of the chief diplomat raising a rainbow flag last month for the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. |

On a related note, I am 99% sure that out-of-drag Nina West was in the row behind me Tuesday night when I saw Audra McDonald's "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune" on Broadway.

The story of Keith Haring, as told through his iconic art work
Quote: |
Moving to New York in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), he made friends with future icons such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Madonna, and Kenny Sharf, and found a new home amongst the thriving art and heaving club scenes. He was revered for his desire to make art accessible for all, whether through his now-famous Subway Drawings on New York’s train carriages, the protest posters he made and handed out at Aids rallies and anti-nuclear demonstrations, painting the body of Grace Jones for her electric performances, or his many public murals and artworks.
Remembered as an extremely generous person, his want to give back to those less fortunate has continued after his death through the work of the Keith Haring Foundation, set up in 1989 to protect his legacy but also to provide imagery and funding to Aids and children’s charities worldwide. |

Dwyane Wade On Supporting Son Attending Gay Pride Parade: It’s Zion’s Story To Tell
Quote: |
“I don’t really talk about it much because it’s Zion’s story to tell. I think as a family, we should support each other. That’s our job. And my job as a father is to facilitate their lives and to support them and be behind them in whatever they want to do.” |
Quote: |
“I’m asked a question about my kids a lot from a sports perspective. I think people expect you to parent each kids the same. They are all different, and I have to get to know them and where they are. I have to say to most parents, get to know your kids. Don’t put your wants and needs on them.” |
Quote: |
“This is my job as a father. I’m very uneasy about accolades that come from supporting my kids or the negativity that comes from it. I’m doing what every parent has to do. Once you bring kids into this world, you become unselfish. It’s my job to be their role model, to be their voice in my kids’ lives, to let them know you can conquer the world. So, go and be your amazing self and we’re going to sit back and just love you.” |
