Alysha Clark certainly did it. I'm sure there are others. But it's a short list.

Wheeler was bounced around a couple of times before becoming a starter, and still could be a starter.

Thornton hears a Who.

I think just about everybody from the infamous Latta-era UNC squad was waived early on in their careers. I’ll let pilight do the vetting on that. It took a while for Pringle to become a starter.

Obviously there’s more to a team than starters.

but she was still recovering from cancer/the treatment for cancer so isn't really a good example.

Thornton and Alysha Clark are good though. Of course they were both having to learn a new position.

I think Breland got cut twice, so that offsets the cancer. Wink

Anna DeForge spent her rookie year in the ABL. I don't know how she did, but when the league folded it took her a couple of years to latch on in the WNBA. DeForge became a starter for several years and made at least one All-Star team.

There have been several that turned out to be pretty good backups, but as for 'solid starter', the ones I can remember shaking my fist at the news of their waiving are: Razz Arrow

    - Allie Quigley, the most famous, waived by The Storm in 2008 Exclamation
    - Karima Christmas, waived by The Mystics in 2011 Idea
    - Cathrine Kraayeveld, waived by The Silver Stars in 2005 Shocked

By solid starter I just meant starting on a fairly regular basis at least for a season, as opposed to starting just a few times in a career as an experiment or emergency fill-in. We could include players who have been productive bench players for multiple seasons.

I was mainly wondering whether waivers for rookies such as Gustafson are a permanent kiss of death for regular play in the W.

Interesting responses so far.

It's not like the men's AP POY exactly lit up the NBA this year, or last year, or the year before that...

That having been said, the national POY has at least made a roster every time in the NBA. There's more than enough talent for WNBA expansion.

Courtney Paris didn't get cut her rookie season in Sacramento, but got cut several times thereafter in the dispersal draft. She seemed to find her groove in the Tulsa/Dallas era, and continued to make rosters....although this season might change that.

Some might say that's not too impressive for an AA kid that led her team (OK) to 2 Final Fours, was voted POY, and holds an NCAA record (double-doubles) that will probably never be broken. But....as we all know....an illustrious career in college does not always translate into a glorious pro career. I'm just glad she's remained somewhat relevant for as long as she has.

As LaChina Robinson tweeted earlier this year, and retweeted because of Gustafson:

The distance between a great college player and a good WNBA player is much greater as the quality of play in the league has grown.

It must have grown greatly in the past two years. Plum was a #1 pick. Wink

Kraay is one of my all-time favorites, the consummate team player. She and JMac worked beautifully together as a post combo.

2nd-ing Courtney Paris.

does Becky Hammon count for this?

Gustafson's rebounding should translate almost directly. Her bag of shot tricks shouldn't go away much either. The list of players who out-statted her is : Griner and senior year Banham. Did she say something against princess Kate's baby ?
