In general, the experience in the league is that hometown heroes impact attendance only insofar as they help the home team win. Obviously a player like Whalen adds lots of wins, so attendance goes up. A very popular player like Stephanie White didn't add any attendance to Indiana because she didn't add wins.
And the on-the-ground math doesn't really pencil out either. Non-playoff high school games draw in the hundreds, at best, and even the presence of dynamic talents like Sabrina Ionescu do little to increase those numbers. Moriah Jefferson, however, played in a league for home school students, so the odds of attendance at those games reaching triple digits does not seem high to me.
Who, then, would go to see Moriah Jefferson play? Her high school classmates and their parents? There were none. Those who saw her play a couple times as opponents? A few. Let's be generous -- call it 50.
And let's add 50 more who never saw her play in high school but maybe saw her club team at local games. Hey, make that 150.
So we have a universe of 200 ... if all 200 attended every Dallas home game, that would boost attendance by 3,400 for the year. And I don't think all 200 are going to every game. |
I'd agree that it's essentially irrelevant in terms of drawing people to the games. But it could be relevant in regards to the player being happy to be there, settling more quickly than others might, and being less likely to ask out at a future date. That can also lead to useful things like a hometown discount on the salary, or being able to core someone else because you know she won't want to leave. If you chase someone because of their hometown links it's probably a bad idea, but it can be a nice little bonus in some ways if they happen to have ties to your area. |

Good points all -- assuming of course the player likes being around her family.

I see a lot of people saying that Las Vegas would win this (potential) trade by a mile.
A few questions:
1) Do people forget how good Moriah Jefferson is and that she is a native of Dallas? Injury concerns, sure, but Jefferson is no slouch.
2) Do people forget that Harrison was arguably SASS's best post player before the relocation? I know it's different, but she's been putting up good numbers overseas.
3) Do people forget that Liz Cambage is Liz Cambage and hasn't had two consecutive seasons without "will I or won't I show up?"
Sure, Cambage would probably elevate Vegas to title contenders (though I have concerns about how her, Wilson and Swords can all play with one another), but to say Dallas would lose this big time is a miscalculation.
This is best case scenario for the Wings IMO and unlike with LA, they aren't getting an unproven rookie and a Russian who likely wouldn't show up with her friends, Nneka and Candace, by her side. |
Right on. The yahoo article called it pennies on the dollar compared to the LA offer. That's bull.
Mo Jeff at #2 v Brown at #7.
Harrison at #12 injured presumed higher if not v Vadeeva at #11.
Mo Jeff and Harrison have had a good season apiece. Brown and Vadeeva are unproven.
I bet they're arguing + calling around for deals, involving that pick and the 2 extra bigs, but the market is tight. Dallas need someone between the 6'2" and 5'9" size gap.

Wilson and Cambage feel really, reeeeeeeally redundant in the same frontcourt. Is the Aces offense just going to be them taking turns going 1on1 on the block? That doesn't seem ideal.
And let's not talk about the defense, Laimbeer can do a lot but how much can he do with Cambage? |
Wilson and Cambage are two totally different style players. If you want to talk about redundancy, look at your team with EDD and Meesseman. |
Yeah you find a way to make it work. Cambage also has a nice outside shot and it pretty mobile for her size. Play her 30 minutes to keep her healthy all season

The reported Cambage to Vegas trade is doubtful to happen as Jefferson is likely to sit out this season.

several reports via Twitter are saying the deal is off due to Jefferson opting to sit out this season due to injuries/fatigue.

So she doesn’t want to be traded? There goes my home state theory.
Will they take Plum?

They could. It would force Jackie Young to play PG. Don't see it happening though.

I surmised after the draft, that Laimbeer took Jackie Young over McCowan because he knew he could get Cambage to fill in as their center. |
He “knew” or he was praying like hell?
He’s got me on this board selling the notion that Vegas isn’t that far away from Los Angeles and the Aces could be a contender with Cambage. She reads this board. |
I surmise that Laimbeer, like myself, is patting himself on the back for "knowing".
When the news came out in January, I said that Las Vegas was a better destination for Cambage, and the team, and she just had to be sold on the idea. Then the news came out after the draft that Las Vegas is out, and it's LA or Bust. Then the Chiney news came out, which busted the LA option. Now, it seems it's Las Vegas or bust.
And now Lambeer is likely pulling a Kevin Durant, saying: "I'm Trader Bill. You know who I am."

LAS is the WNBA abbreviation for the Sparks.

Forced? That was Laimbeer’s plan. Maybe he’ll rethink that plan if the trade falls through. Maybe not.

Cambage finding out two can play that game |
Bill should enlist his friend Katie for help. Send Jefferson to NY, NY can send Hartley or Boyd to Dallas maybe even throw in their second round pick in 2020. Bias gets a season to audition, Jefferson can relax or miraculously recover and NY plays for Ionescu. Jefferson backs up Ionescu in 2020. |
Bill should take a page from LeBron James and enlist his players to do the recruiting...
Ask A'ja or McBride to take Cambage out on the town, get MGM to set up outings with DJs Steve Aoki, Anderson .Paak, or Deadmau5, fancy dinners and spas, then start talking basketball
I believe the Chiney trade could be used as a precedent for what you can expect to get back for a player who might sit out, which is, not that much, or not what you'd expect.
The hurdle might be Cambage's enthusiasm for Las Vegas, which, if LV knows she wants to come, they'll offer more in the package, and Dallas can pull the trigger.

But without Jefferson, who does Vegas throw in there now? Harrison & Bone plus their 2020 first rounder?

In both the US and Turkey, Boyd was a much better player than Jefferson this past year. Also, NY has no 2nd Round pick because they traded it for Wright.

They want a PG, so Plum.
Plum is too much? Since when? Laimbeer says he wants to make Young his lead guard. Has Colson now as a backup.

I think the claim that Kelsey Plum was a point guard in college would be rated "mostly false" by FactCheck.org

Interesting move by Jefferson ...
So is she not going to play in the WNBA at all, or only if she gets traded?
