LOS ANGELES (AP) - Doris Day, whose wholesome screen presence stood for a time of innocence in '60s films, has died, her foundation says. She was 97.
The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed Day died early Monday at her Carmel Valley, California, home. The foundation says in an emailed statement she was surrounded by close friends and "had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia."
She was known for her honey-voiced singer and actress whose film dramas, musicals and innocent sex comedies made her a top star in the 1950s and '60s and among the most popular screen actresses in history.
Day's lilting voice, wholesome blond beauty and ultra-bright smile brought her a string of hits, first on records, later in Hollywood.
She celebrated her 97th birthday on April 3.

Good piece in the Times.
The assessments of her singing voice in this piece as ‘golden’ and ‘magic.’ You could add a couple dozen more adjectives but golden and magic sums it up pretty well. Her version of ‘Hooray For Hollywood’ is the one you hear in your head even if you haven’t heard the song in years.
In ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ her acting in the scene where her husband (Jimmy Stewart) tells her that their son has been kidnapped is raw emotion and the rest of the film rides on the palpability of her desperation.
But it was her ‘performance’ in the 1970s on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where she coyly and sexily (and bra-lessly) protests her innocent image that melted my television set and left I’m sure many young hippy dippy men like me shaken and confused. Doris Day? Wow. I did not know that, sir!
She was solid and she will be missed and fondly remembered but somehow she seems to deserve so much more._________________ Every woman who has ever been presented with a career/sex quid pro quo in the entertainment industry should come forward and simply say, “Me, too.” - jammer The New York Times 10/10/17 |

I conflate an earlier Tonight Show appearance when Doris is bra-less as all get out and this one wherein she briefly protests her image. The only reason I'm posting this, because the video is horrible, is it contains this moment where they're discussing pornography. It's very easy to forget how funny Johnny Carson really was.
